What is Reddit's opinion of Odd Bot Out?

A recent favorite is a $2 indie puzzle game on mobile called <em>Odd Bot Out</em>.

With plain levels, crude audio, no characters, no dialogue, and no text, the game uses only basic symbols and just a skeleton of a story: your name is Odd, you're a Bot, you fail a standard test, get thrown into the recycling bin, and must solve 100 puzzles to get Out. It's all in the title.

OBO takes the "figure it out" approach to game design, which I love and respect immensely. No tutorials. No hand-holding. No bullshit. Just experiment to learn what the blocks do. And with scaffolding, its later concepts build on its early concepts, so the puzzles maintain variety.

All in all, an earnest and intelligent game easily worth the price of a soda.

It's $2, it has 100 levels, the art style is simple, and the gameplay is straightforward. OBO is one of my favorite puzzle games ever.

In this post, I'm building a different list, even though the intersection is large. You know that aiming for "long play sessions" is pretty subjective. Since I like puzzle games, I can play one repeatedly for quite some time, even on PC. So, naturally, my list has several of those.

Originals (they usually have short levels, anyway):

• Odd Bot Out
• Horizon Chase
• Trainyard and Trainyard Express, Continuity 2 and Continuity 2 Lite, Squarescape, and maybe others from Noodlecake Studios
• Train Conductor 2: USA
• Puzzle Retreat
• Hoplite, which is a turn-based strategy rogue-like
• Bean's Quest
• Monument Valley

Ports:

• The Bard's Tale (I've not played it myself)
• Another World, and probably others from DotEmu
• Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic CD
• If you like the ~~broken~~ different physics of "modern" Sonic: Sonic 4 Episode I, Sonic 4 Episode II. In fact, I believe the mobile versions were developed alongside with console versions; so they are not exactly a port.
• Crazy Taxi, the original console versions were already very arcade-ish. I haven't played this one.
• Maybe others from SEGA? Hard to know, they released so much crap already.
• Older games from Rockstar
• HyperRogue and HyperRogue Lite (I'm not sure if this is a port, or if it was developed alongside the PC version)
• Simon Tatham's Puzzles, it is a port, but also feels a bit casual, so maybe does not fit in your list. Still, high quality and I used to play that on my PC as well.
• Minecraft: Pocket Edition - I hated controlling this with touch controls on a small screen. I prefer a PC with mouse and keyboard.
• Terraria and Terraria. - I hated controlling this with touch controls on a small screen. I prefer a PC with mouse and keyboard.
• Carmageddon, sadly, does not support controllers.
• Gerhard Stein ported some games such as Commander Genius and OpenTyrian. I have not tried them.
• OpenTTD — I tried this several years ago, and the UI was too cumbersome and too small. By the screenshots, it seems it has been updated, but I'm still not sure if I would play it on mobile or on a desktop. Although it may be good for a large tablet. The author also ported some other software.
• World of Goo, Osmos, SpaceChem Mobile, and probably several others that have been featured in Humble Bundle

Emulators:

• MAME4droid (0.139u1) and MAME4droid (0.37b5)
• RetroArch - Great, although it had a confusing UI, and the current version does not work on my device.
• ScummVM
• John Emulators — Years ago, Little John PalmOS was a famous multi-system emulator. It was GPL and was also ported to GP32. I'm not sure if the current John emulators from the Play Store are from the same lineage (but they are not open-source). If someone knows, please tell me! Still, those emulators have a very straight-forward interface, support (multiple!) external controllers, and even have Dropbox sync support.
• There are several ports of DOSBox, but I have not tried any recently.

P.S.: As a public service, I believe you should link all the suggested games. Sometimes searching them on the play store is a pain. Even worse if people are reading this reddit post on mobile.

I believe it to be the weakest of Martin's games. After phenomenal Odd Bot Out (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.martinmagni.oddbotoutpaid) which I loved the most (even though level editor was never released for this one), Mekorama was a disappointment (even though it had a level editor). There is Fancade nowm though (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.martinmagni.fancade) - an almost endless supply of arcade games for mobile which is heavily supported by community (with new cool games released almost every day). I highly recommend everyone to try it out.
