For any Pakistanis or people who like Pakistani music:
Patari is an app similar to spotify where you can stream nearly every Pakistani song. It also pays out to the artists and allows you to view Coke studios latest videos.
Hi guys
Thanks for all the love on this post. I work with Patari as the Director of Content and I thought I might use this opportunity to answer some of the questions raised here.
> ELI5?
So put simply, Patari is an online streaming app for Pakistani music. Users can simply start playing songs on the site, without having to pay for anything. However, during the stream there will be ads playing, and if the user wishes to go ad-free, they can get a monthly subscription. At the moment, this is planned to be at Rs. 50 for Pakistani users, and around $5 for international ones.
The ads and subscriptions are important because this is how the artist will be paid. At the end of each quarter (three months) we will split all the revenue we generate with our artists. Each artist will get paid based on the number of plays their tracks generate, and they will receive all the data for this at the end of the quarter.
The Android app is available here, ~~while we are still waiting on Apple to finish their approval process for the iOS app~~ and here is the iOS app.
> Is this legal?
> Did they not run into some trouble with EMI Pakistan? What became of that I wonder.
Patari was in a closed, invite-only beta phase for the past few months, during which time we set up the library and sorted out all our copyright and consent. When the site went live on the 4th of Septemeber, all the 1000+ artists available on the site were those with whom all consent and copyright issues had been resolved. The most important - in terms of media attention - was our deal with EMI Records, which was also concluded before the launch. We still have a large list of artists with whom either the negotiations are ongoing, or the artists have gone AWOL. One issue has been that a lot of underground, one-hit wonders have sort of disappeared, but our endeavour is for Patari to eventually be one roof for all Pakistani music.
> Seems good. What does the name mean? Patari.
Patari generally refers to a small box or container, and is often the name given to the small covered basket that snake charmers carry. The idea behind the name was that each user could put what they wanted in their Patari - we wanted it to reflect how diverse our musical culture is, and how it was important to take ownership of it.
Apart from the app, Patari is also currently working with musicians to help reinvigorate the Pakistani music ecosystem. Starting this week, we are collaborating with Noori to hold three, exclusive events in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi which will serve as preview shows for their latest album.
We have also commissioned a string of underground artists to produce a series of singles we will be releasing as an EP called Patari Aslis (a take on the word 'originals'). The idea is that a lot of these guys don't have the resources to properly produce songs, so we have offered to help cover their costs and be paid for making new music.
I am going to stop before this becomes too much of an advertisement ^if ^it ^isn't ^already. Do feel free to check it out at the www.patari.pk or the mobile apps, and let me know if you have any comments/suggestions/complaints.
Also check out this video made by various indie artists for us.
EDIT 1: The iOS app is now available on the App Store as well.
EDIT 2:
> when will you add the download to SD card for offline listening feature? I don't have wifi all the time and I think that most Pakistanis feel the same, plus my mobile Internet is slow and the data cap is too low :/
So the subscription feature will include an option that will allow you to save a limited number of songs on your app which you can listen to offline. We are also going to be launching deals with telcos that will offer special deals for using the app, much like Whatsapp, Facebook etc.
> Is there any chance for a Windows Phone app?
We are a really small team, and are already pretty stretched handling the three platforms - web, Android and iOS. We do want to spread to other platforms, but at the moment we want to perfect what we have.
