I have a 4g connection and VG runs ultra smooth for me. Had to tweak 1 thing though. Most of the providers use own DNS servers which are mostly overloaded and cannot resolve the hostnames. To set custom DNS for mobile connections download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pepeware.dns.free or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.burakgon.dnschanger Use Google DNS options. For Indian JIO users this is the magic solution you need to make use of your JIO connection as was intended.
By referring DNS requests for ad domains to 127.0.0.1 for example. I just started using DNS Changer with Adguard's DNS servers, as recommended by /u/Haduken2g in another comment here.
Here's a little trick that you can use to not get ugly ass ads on websites. This only works for Android and does not require root.
You can download Pepe DNS Changer and create a new entry using the Adguard DNS (176.103.130.130, 176.103.130.131). Activate it and you should feel a little less annoyed. I'm sorry, I don't know how to do it on iPhone just yet :(

And use any dns address you want to use. Btw you can use dns66 or blocada too and they provide ad-blocking too.

If, for some reason, you only care about blocking on wifi, and you're always on the same wifi network (or don't mind setting it up for each network), you can just set the connection to use Adguard's DNS servers without having to install anything.
Or you can use Pepe DNS Changer! to setup it, is the only one I found to be ad free and simple.
