And you're aware that when you link it consumes the key to that portal? I only ask because it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize when I was starting out.

Are you on Android? I use this android app frequently when I have a question about portal level or link range. There are many similar apps.

The max range of an unmodded L8 portal is 655 km. According to Fev Games, the maximum link bonus available is with 4 Very Rare Link Amps providing a boost of 10.5x. This gives us a final max range of 6881 km. Tokyo to California is something like 8,000 km. So, no dice.

BTW, I first looked this up with the Android app Portal Calc. It's super handy for these sorts of questions. I presume there is something similar in the Apple app store. I included the Fev Games articles so that you could see where the link range calculations come from, in case you were interested in reading more.
