Sure, I also enjoy when some games launch as portrait mode (e.g. Rule with an Iron Fish).
However, SMR is a failure from a design perspective. SMR (and Mario games in general) is about traversing a horizontal plane, but it's shown in a vertical mode... If they had made a vertical Mario game, sure, but they didn't - so they tried to make it different/into a gimmick, because that's what they do.
It's a shame, as Nintendo has some amazing games I'd love to see coming onto iOS/Android. Something like Captain Toad? Dr. Mario? etc.. Could work incredibly well as vertical games.
