>many new apps are coming to Android TV such as CNN, Comedy Central, MTV, Freeform, Nickelodeon, Spotify, STARZ, WATCH ABC, WATCH Disney Channel, WATCH Disney Junior, ESPN and many more.
ESPN, Starz and Spotify are live. Otherwise, great to see more big names finally acknowledging Android TV.
Did you try downloading through your desktop? This worked for me.

Spotify Music - for Android TV Current Version 1.17.0 no mods yet hopefully someone will mod this latest version for Android TV. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spotify.tv.android&hl=en_US
Not sure but i suspect there is a bit of a hint in the play-store page:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spotify.tv.android&hl=en
Specifically the com.spotify.tv.android part. Maybe have a play around with that and see if some of the mobile spotify intents work on that.
Another option would be to use Intent Intercept, or similar to try and catch the intents that way. (I don't have android tv so am unable to do any testing for you)
Just skimming through, once I saw the Shield listed I immediately said "right there, go with that". I went back and actually read your post, though. hehe
I have the Amazon Prime Video app sideloaded on my Shield. It was ripped from a Bravia TV so it's got some extraneous control options but I'm able to navigate around with the Shield remote just fine and pick things to watch. So while not "official" and not optimized for the Shield, I'd say it is functional enough for anyone that's not looking for the #1 Amazon Prime experience. That'd have to be on an Amazon FireTV product.
Roku's are great because they support a lot of stuff and have a lot of extra channels. They're also pretty affordable.
For Spotify, I don't have much experience with it (I use Play Music for streaming) but ~~I'm pretty sure you could use Google Cast to get music playing on the Shield. There just isn't a native app at this time, so it's kind of a workaround.~~ they have a native app!
I would say it's between Roku and a FireTV box, with HDHomeRun being an issue. ~~If you're okay with casting Spotify (or ditching it for another service), then~~ the Shield will do a lot and do it well.
Live as of recently: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spotify.tv.android
Spotify released their official app on the app-store some days ago, get it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spotify.tv.android
Oh shit! They made a separate app. That's why I didn't see it, I was looking at the mobile version.
Well a Spotify app isn't available on Android TV.
EDIT : my bad :) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spotify.tv.android
