I second what others have said about the fire/ambulance service first aid courses. They're basic, but cheap and quick. Some locations do babies+children as a separate course, others do all ages together.
Unless they have the misfortune to actually need to use their newly-acquired knowledge and skills, most people quickly forget. So it's also important to do refresher courses regularly. (Source: I'm a former first aid instructor)
There's no substitute for hands-on practice. A backup plan is also really helpful for moments of panic. If you have a smartphone, there are many first aid apps available. The most useful I have seen is from St John Ambulance (iOS or Android)
I also recommend the St John's Ambulance App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=an.sc.sja&hl=en_GB
Not the best designed app in the world but covers all the major first aid stuff you might need and, combined with the basic training, should be enough to respond to an incident.

Last time this was discussed someone suggested this one instead, can't remember why but supposedly had some advantage.
Really? I've never had that problem on any of my phones or tablets.. Weird.
I'm sure there are a lot of alternatives though, this one also looks good.
