StartFromZero_French app and the Beginner French app are pretty good starter apps for anyone looking to begin learning on their own some basic French words and phrases from scratch.

Whether French, German, Italian, Latin or even Chinese (as Jihai mentioned below), if you are a complete beginner, you can always try to learn to build up your vocabulary. The startfromzero series are pretty helpful in that aspect. Try it out.
