I don't know if can be useful to You, but since 2013 I'm using Swapps Sidebar. It supports up to 100 items (shortcuts, apps, widget). It is not free and the last update was in 2015, but It's still working pretty well on my Samsung A71 and A50 devices.
Want to drop some love to Swapps here.

While I think the design is a terrible idea for Ubuntu Unity on a desktop, for a mobile it's really ideal. There's a few tweaks I wish Swapps would/could implement which would really replace the app drawer, if not the home screen entirely.
Been a big fan of Swapps & haven't run into any issues with it in the past year & a half. I actually use Swapps about 8/10 times to launch an app, no matter what screen I'm on.
Screenshot just to show what the app can look like when launched inside another app (Relay in this case). And yes, an ad-free version is available.
I just watched a video about Appbutton. Here's an android app that seems to do something similar.
Also, the S5 is definitely NOT the best Android phone. It's ugly on the inside (bloatware, slow and ugly touchwiz skin), and the outside (bandaid back). The S6 is a HUGE improvement.
The S5 gets compared to the iPhone so much only because Samsung is the most popular Android manufacturer.
Some actually good Android phones are the S6 (and S6 Edge), LG G4, HTC One, Moto X, and Droid Turbo, and if you like phablets, there's the Nexus 6 and the Note 4.
I'm big into these types of apps & have experience with a large percentage of the ones you'd find on the Play Store, save for a handful that I feel are best to avoid for various reasons.
I noticed you mentioned finding & liking Edge Launcher. If that is working for you & filling all your needs, then awesome, stick with it. It's a great app with an honest dev (far more than I can say for Omni Swipe's) & I even used it myself on & off for long periods of time. I'm not gonna try to persuade you to switch, but if you want to try out some other quality side launchers out there for comparisons sake, here are a few suggestions (all have free versions to test out btw):
Swapps is hands down my most used app, & always one of the, if not the first app I install on new devices. Very customizable both in terms of edge triggers & how the side launcher looks. Even when I'm running a device hard with multitasking & some always running apps start force closing or restarting, this app keeps on trucking.
Switchr. Curse this dev for abandoning his awesome apps, but awesome they are nonetheless. Swapps is great for having your entire collection of apps accessible from everywhere, while Switchr is best for accessing those 5 or 6 apps you find yourself just constantly opening. There have been a few similarly styled launchers pop up on the Play Store over the past year, but they don't quite match Switchr's fluidness.
Swipe-In Settings. Honestly, probably not what you're looking for, but it falls in the same category & is one of the only apps I've found that can do what it does. Just like Switchr, Swipe-In likely will never see any more updates, but I think the fact that both these apps still run perfectly fine even after 2 years is a testament to their quality. There's 2 things I use Swipe-In for, & that's screen brightness & volume control, set above & below one another. By far the quickest & easiest way to control these 2 settings I've ever come across.
Maybe you'll like one of these apps more, maybe not. However, Omni Swipe, Swiftly, & CM Swipe are all apps I would strongly suggest you stay away from. I can't say for sure whether they are all malicious, but between excessive permissions & shady dev history, there's no reason to risk it when so many others exist.
This is an Android-based topic that has long been a huge interest of mine & something I can't live without on my phone & tablet. Get ready for a rant, cause I get a little OCD about it.
My personal setup is composed of 3 similar apps actually, one of which being Switchr like yourself (the absence of the running apps feature sucks, but it's a minor loss given the convenience of all the remaining features), Swipe-In (probably abandoned by the dev, but still works perfect), & Swapps.
Swapps: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.schiztech.swapps
Swipe-In: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sureshot.swipe
Switchr: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mohammad.adib.switchr
Swapps goes to the top right side of the screen, & when triggered displays 9 of my most used apps. Scrolling down has my remaining apps, minus games, background apps, icon packs & other theme based stuff.
Switchr gets middle right, but cutoff before the keyboard height to avoid accidentally triggering it. I used to have my 7 (by far) most used apps pop out, but for some reason since my switch to a Moto X, I can only sideload the apk (Switchr is listed as incompatible in the Play Store, even though it's very much compatible) & this limits me to the free version & thus only 6 apps - I know, huge difference.
Swipe-In gets left bottom & top, but avoiding the middle. Bottom is to control screen brightness, & top controls media volume. Being right-handed & having the trigger thin enough, the bottom doesn't interfere with the keyboard. I really can't stress enough how convenient it is to control brightness & volume this way, especially when bouncing around from app to app as I can't help but do.
All three apps have vibration enabled for their triggers so releasing without sideways movement won't trigger them to open. The gaps left (left middle & bottom right) are for navigation drawers & such (Dolphin Browser uses a right side nav drawer too for example).
Battery is truly barely affected by having 3 similar apps running in the background all the time & hiding their notification icons keeps them running without taking up space, so if your device has the RAM to spare, there's really no downsides.
Some app recommendations: · Simple Control by coolace https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ace.jun.simplecontrol Same concept as previous 3 apps, but it could prove handy with the Recent Apps issue from hardware buttons on a Samsung.
· App Swap - The Smart Drawer by net.ebt https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.ebt.appswitch Has a smart sorting setting, so recent & most used apps appear first. A comparable workaround for Switchr's absent feature on Lollipop. <--That is the reason I stick with Android. There's always alternatives to personal preferences & customizations.
· Clipper - The Clipboard Manager by rojekti https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.rojekti.clipper Unrelated to every previous app mentioned, but as far as multitasking goes, this app has been essential for me.
If you've actually read this to the end, let me know what sort of little tricks you can't live without on your Android. Happy tweaking!
Launcher: HTC Sense with Venom Tweaks
App Launchers: Swapps! (right) & Wave Launcher (bottom)
KWGT files: Music / Clock & Weather
Icons: Tha Phlash - Razr (dock) & Brushed (launchers) / Basil3 - Black & Grey (app drawer) I can't find a DL link, but if anyone wants it I can extract it from my rom..
Font: Sarpanch Regular
Also.. If you prefer inverted/black colored apps over white and material colors you should check out TeamBlackedOut. All the Gapps, fbook, Instagram, and tons more that I use look killer. They're relatively quick with updates too.
>I don't know what I'd do without AppList. (It slides in from the side and has an alphabetical list. When you hover the letters, a list of apps starting with that letter pops out.)
I've never had a need for an app like that, but I think that's likely because of the customization available for the app drawer and homepages in good launchers like Nova Launcher. The ability to create app drawer tabs and folders, then drag those to your homescreen and have it synchronize shortcuts, keeps things organized and accessible. So does having a dock on the homescreen, where you can have multiple folders or even additional slide in pages. Or launching apps by gesture. Or by voice. Or from my Pebble, and so on.
But if you find that sort of app list necessary still, here's one such app I think you'd be interested in. I'm sure there are a lot of ways to give you similar functionality as well.
> there's an app for Android to text from Pebble?
A couple of ways:
If you just received a notification of a text message on your Pebble - you can do a Reply action to it. Reply gives you 3 options (on Pebble Time): Template, Voice or Emoji. Template let's you reply with canned messages that you can define under Notification Responses in the Pebble app. Your text message app of choice, if it has Android Wear or Pebble support, can have additional responses as well, for instance, Handcent SMS gives you additional canned responses. Voice uses the mic on Pebble Time, and Emoji is a list of 24 Emoji to reply with.
In addition apps on Pebble can also initiate a text message, even if you're not replying to a notification. Apps like Glance can initiate a text message by replying to a prior text message thread that you've recently had. It can also display the contents of these prior text message threads. Glance also has many of it's own customizable canned messages you can reply with.
If you want to actually type a text message on the watch you can use an app like Pebble Communicator which has Tertiary Text support (about as good as text entry can be on Pebble).
