Swipetimes. All day every day.
I used it exclusively when time tracking. It's an amazing application, IMO. I'd say it's quite possibly superior to Toggl in several respects. I'd definitely take it over Toggl, but I tracked almost entirely on the one device (there's no cloud tracking, IIRC)
I've been using Swipetimes recently for time tracking and project management. Looks like a promising app to me. Have tried other such software but this one came the closest to what I was looking for.

Swipetimes. I use it, same issues as you had. This should solve your problems.
It has tasker integration and I find it helpful to automate my day. eg. 7am start "life - hygiene" task, wait 15 mins, start "travel - work" task, wait 45mins, start "serious - work" task. Mon-Fri.
Helps that my day's start is the same for those 5 days.
I would also recommend checking out SwipeTimes. It has a nice interface and all the features I need in a time tracker (and sounds like it would for you as well). It's one of my favorite apps.
I've been using Swipetimes for Android the past few months, and find it easy to use.
It allows you to sort activities into "Projects," then into "Tasks" under those Projects. Then you also have "Tags" that can be used across different Projects/Tasks.
This lets you get pretty creative in how your stats are reported. Not sure how their stats utility stacks up to the other mentioned in this thread.
Unfortunately, I don't think you can cross reference tags and projects in the app. However, you can export to CSV/Sheets, but it might cost you a one-time $1-2 fee for the luxury.
I've been enjoying Swipetimes for Android. It might take a while to figure out the best way to structure projects, tasks, and tags to meet your workflow, but after that it's very easy to incorporate into your day.
It's somewhat new, but is rather polished, and has an active developer.
Take a look at SwipeTimes. I started using it several years ago to track everyday activities like you're describing, for similar reasons (though now I mostly just use it to track time spent working and sleeping).
I don't use widgets, but it does have one, though it's a bit basic. It does not have a floating bubble, like fb messenger. Once you have started tracking an activity, it does show that current "stopwatch" in a notification, and it has buttons to pause/resume or stop tracking.
Swipetimes is probably as close to the best as you're going to get.
