If you're willing to spend a few $, Enchanted Cave 2 is a way better version of this and is not bound by terrible IAP that blocks progress after a few hours.

Here is part of the skill tree in The Enchanted Cave 2.

The Enchanted Cave 2 is pretty great, its a roguelike with progression between runs and a central town hub. Also has a somewhat interesting main story and a BBEG at the end. Worth checking out.

I Pretty much have played this game on my phone non-stop since it came out a month ago. No cheating or anything if that's even possible on phones IDK. I am just wondering if anyone else out there plays this game. I have a wealth of knowledge about it now and if I knew how to help the Wikia along I would but it seems they are only interested in the "Free version" stuff, I think, or at least only info for first play through, which I am now on my 7th (NG+6) so the info would be very, very different.
It's a rogue-like. You have a single town and a single 100 story dungeon. Every 10 floors (usually) you are able to safely return to town to sell your swag. Everytime you re-enter the dungeon you start with no regular gear or items. There are artifacts (powerful gear) however and those you do get to keep.
There is also a decent crafting and enchanting system. And an infinite game+ as well.

I've been playing the heck out of The Enchanted Cave 2. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.okshur.enchantedCave2 I played the older flash game (which is also on Android) and loved it and didn't even know this came out early last year. He put a demo of the game on Kongregate. http://www.kongregate.com/games/DustinAux/the-enchanted-cave-2

Ahh, Tibia. Good shit.
This isnt MMO, but while playing it, I was reminded of Tibia quite a bit...

Could it be Enchanted Cave?
This fits all the descriptions you've mentioned, including coloured chests and the harder monsters a different colour. It's an awesome game btw.

The Enchanted Cave 2 is pretty dead on to what you might be looking for. Tons of loot, leveling, skill trees, trading for and crafting equipment. Cool push your luck dungeons. For combat you just click on enemies, it's not turn based but if you want to disengage you just click away and they don't chase you. It's on Steam too so there are plenty of gameplay videos exist.
I'd not buy it on desktop but enjoyed it for a couple of hours on my android phone: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.okshur.enchantedCave2
The mechanics are rather simplistic and the game itself is quite easy though a little grindy. Not bad for a mobile time-waster.
Hm, a tough request. I know a couple roguelikes that let you build your character over games, but they are mostly turn based and are paid. The Enchanted Cave 1 and 2 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.okshur.enchantedCave2 And if you own a tablet Desktop Dungeon has a LOT of depth, but it's pricey at 10 bucks https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.QCFDesign.DesktopDungeonsMobile
This one is paid but it has all that you ask for
Loot grind game perfect for tablet:
Controller supported ARPG games:
Controller supported turn based RPGs:
Yes, I think Pixel Dungeon could be called a dungeon crawler. But it is also a rogue-like with the common rogue-like features of turn based combat, permanent death, mostly randomly generated dungeons, etc.
Another game that is kind of like Pixel Dungeon, but much easier is Enchanted Cave 2, I'd call it a rogue-lite. Also one character, but there's a town you can go back to if you plan properly. I also vaguely remember that if you died, you just have to load the last save - which could very well be from hours ago - but I don't remember if it was permadeath. Unlike Pixel Dungeon, the monsters don't chase you, so again - this is much easier. Premium game, no ads, no IAPs.
Another game that is a combination of a rogue-lite and a deck building game is Guild of Dungeoneering. You start out with one hero and unlock more as you play. Your abilities are cards, different heroes have different cards. It's rogue-lite in that each run your deck resets and the dungeons are mostly randomly generated, but you earn gold that can be used for permanent upgrades. Premium game, no ads, no IAPs.
If rogue-likes and rogue-lites aren't your cup of tea, you could try something like Heroes of Steel, which is a top down, strategy rpg with a team of four. There's some open areas, but a lot of the game has you going through what I'd call dungeons. There's also a free demo. The demo has IAP to unlock the full version. Full version had optional IAP for something like extra classes. Neither has ads.
Another in a similar vein is 9th Dawn II which has a pretty open world. Premium, no ads, no IAPs. Also a free demo.
For a game with a first person view, there's The Quest which is a single hero. Premium game, no ads, no IAPs. Has a bunch of expansions available for purchase as separate apps.
Finally, I don't think it could be called a dungeon crawler, but Vampire's Fall Origins was popular last year. Turn based combat. Free, ads, optional IAPs.

Enchanted Cave 2 - it's a fairly basic rpg that will suck hours out of your soul. Pretty great story too, if not stuble.
Grindy and IAP filled rip-off of The Enchanted Cave.
