In fact, I did not know about subsonic before writing that post. I might give it a try. Gonic/ultrasonic seem interesting.
Yepp, Can confirm, Navidrome is the way to go and on Android you can use Ultrasonic or any other Subsonic Client.

Ultrasonic is nearly identical to Dsub for what I do with Subsonic and it's free. Dsub adds a couple of things like <recently added> and is a little more polished but if you are just trying to get a feel for Subsonic I would try Ultrasonic first.

I use Ultrasonic on Android
I switched to self-hosted nextcloud + music app, and ultrasonic on my android phone. Costs 12€/year for my domain + hardware (machine and drives). If you have time to spare, you could probably do that on a VPS or cheap hosting platform.

I had the exact same thing happen with me.
I tried out Plex +Plexamp but hated how it handled the library/playlists (sorry plex, I love you for movies and tv)
I tried out funkwhale but was annoyed with the server/client setup (we used grooveshark for years and loved it until it closed).
I ended up with subsonic and Ultrasonic android app (we have it linked to our sonos with their integration and the rokus with this app)
I use UltraSonic (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.moire.ultrasonic&hl=en). The jukebox player works well.
