I never got to try any neat VR stuff in the arcades when I was a kid but that was when I first saw it as an actual idea for a real product.
My first experience was at PAX Prime 2013. I was a Rift backer but never got to actually try a devkit since I didn't back high enough for that. I barely made it into line on the last day I was there.
I was set up for a static demo sitting in an F1 car. It was pretty cool but I didn't realize at the time I could've taken off my glasses and been fine.
In any case the demo was still awesome. Before I left the booth I spotted Palmer who was messing with a DK1 I think. Unfortunately I couldn't remember his at the time name at all - I just remembered his face and that he was pretty important at Oculus. So I said "Hey you work on this project, right?" and someone turned around and jokingly said "Oh yeah he's the intern." and we had a chuckle etc.
I shook his hand, let him know I was a backer (for which he thanked me of course), and told him I'd buy an HD devkit if that ever came out. He then told me something to the effect of "Oh man we have such better things coming out."
Well he wasn't kidding I guess! It's a bit of a fanboy thing but I'm not going to forget that was the moment your confidence made me believe that VR was really going to make it, /u/palmerluckey. :)
Second up though came from me being fed up that I couldn't get my hands on a DK1. So I built my own Google Cardboard-type VR viewer.
I was actually quite surprised at how effective it was with Dive's VR software for Android phones. I kind of imagine maybe Palmer, Carmack, and journalists felt the same way when they tried Palmer's original duct-taped prototypes. Like "Wow if you can do this with some hot glue what can you do with a real product?!"
I tried a VR Bathroom simulation while I was in the bathroom for kicks. I think it was this one but it looks different now. At the time it matched the layout of my bathroom surprisingly well so it was quite effective!
