Here you go :)
First things first never open packs with coins...
There are 2 main "Game Modes" within Ultimate Team. These are:
Seasons
You start in Division 10 and gain points by winning and drawing matches. Each season ends when you've played 10 games or it's mathematically impossible for you to gain promotion. When completing a season, you get a coin bonus (I'll come to these soon) depending on whether you get relegated, hold your division, gain promotion, or win the title.
Draft
Draft is a new game mode EA released this year which is a game mode where you enter with a draft token, 15k coins or FIFA Points (can't remember exact amount - will come back to FIFA points soon). When you enter a draft you get a choice between 5 formations. Once you choose a formation you get a given 5 players to choose a captain. Then you select a position and pick 1 of the 5 players that pops up. When choosing players people generally go with either the best player or for chemistry reasons (will come to chemistry soon). A draft is like a knockout tournament; you play a maximum of 4 matches (less if you lose a match). Once completing a draft, you get some packs as a reward.
Currencies are:
Coins
Coins are the main currency in Ultimate Team. You gain coins through playing matches, the coin bonuses for season completion, selling items (player or consumables) and you can make coins through trading. Coins are used to open packs (very much not recommended) or to buy players. You cannot buy coins as it is against the terms of service.
FIFA Points
FIFA points are the way EA makes money from Ultimate Team. You purchase them through micro transactions. You use FIFA points to open packs or enter drafts.
Fitness, Contracts and Chemistry
Fitness, Contracts and Chemistry are some of the most confusing things in the game. I'll try cover them as best as possible.
Contracts
Your players that you own have a certain amount of contracts. The amount of contracts a player has is the amount of games you can use that player for. Once a player runs out of contracts you must apply a contract card to continue using that player. Contract cards can be packed or bought off the transfer market. They come in bronze, silver, and gold, both rare and non-rare (like all cards). The amount of contracts a player will gain from your contract card depends on the number at the bottom of it. For example, a non-rare gold contract will give 13 contracts to a gold player.
Fitness
Your players also have a fitness meter. By clicking the right stick left or right when on the squad screen you can see how much fitness a player has left. The highest is 99 and lowest 10. Players with low fitness are more likely to become injured and can sprint for far less time than a player with high fitness. You can apply a fitness card to replenish a player’s fitness or put the players low on fitness onto the bench of another team.
Chemistry
The most uncertain thing in Ultimate Team. No one really knows exactly how it works but what is widely believed is that the higher the chemistry the better. There are 2 types of chemistry. 1. Individual Player Chemistry 2. Team Chemistry.
Individual Player Chemistry
This is out of 10. A player gains chemistry points by getting links from other players, loyalty bonuses, and manager bonus. When a player is from either the same nation or same league as another they get a soft link (orange line). For example, Ronaldo and Messi or Reus and Kroos. When a player plays for the same team or is in the same league as a fellow countryman they get a hard link (green link). For example, Ronaldo and Modric or Reus and Lahm. When a player plays for the same team and are from the same country they get a hyperlink (also green, no visual difference from a hard link). For example, Ronaldo and Pepe or Reus and Gundogan. Chemistry is also affected by the position you play someone in versus the position on their card (which you can change - will touch on this later). For example, if I play Reus at LM he will get 10 chemistry with the correct links and loyalty/manager bonus but if I play him at CM the most individual chemistry he can get is 7 with correct links and loyalty/manager bonuses. It is widely believed that a player with anything less than 5 chemistry will play worse than their stats suggest. However, it has not been proven that there is a difference between playing someone on 7 chem than playing someone on 10 chem. For example, I play Hazard on 7 chem as a ST (by converting his LM card to LF using position change cards) and he feels no different than playing him at LW or LM.
Team Chemistry
This is out of 100. The game adds up all the individual player chemistry totals and gets a score which is up to 100. This is largely irrelevant but some people (like myself) find it more pleasing to get 100 chemistry with a bunch of crazy leagues.
Fitness and Chemistry Glitches
So there is a fitness and a chemistry glitch as well. This is what we know:
Is it a day one card?
A Day One Card is a card that has been in the game since the start. Every original NIF. For example
Ronaldos NIF 93 LW is his Day One Card.
Non Day One Cards are all cards that have been added into the game since the release of FIFA 16. This list consists of:
TOTY, InForms, TOTS, MOTM, iMOTM, Classic Hero's, Hero's, International Position Changes, TOTT, Winter Upgrades, Transfers, and Record Breakers
If it is a Non Day One Card they always have 4 chem and start every game on full fitness even when the squad screen shows them having 10 chem and 50 fitness.
For example:
NIF Reus - He will have the amount of chemistry shown (so if it says he's on 10, he is on 10) and will start the game one the amount of fitness his card shows (so if he has 80 fitness he will start the game with 80 fitness). This is all because he is what is known as a day one card (a card that is part of the game from the release)
MOTM Reus - He will have 4 chemistry even if it says he has 10 which means that his stats are exactly what is shown. He will start the game with a full bar of fitness even if his card says he has 20 fitness. This is because he was added into the game Midway through the year.
Building a squad
To build a squad you need to purchase players with coins from the transfer market or get them in packs. I highly recommend checking out the Daily Squad Thread (Here is today's thread) for help on your squads. When building a squad you should look at player stats and what formations you like the most. Also PM me if you want any help as well :)
I also suggest checking out these websites:
FutHead - Probably the best place for player stats and good for squad building
FutWiz - Good for player stats and squad building
FutBin - Probably the best for squad building as player prices are also accurate
WeFut - Very good for filtering players and good for squad building
Also if you have a mobile device you can get apps.
If you are on IOS get the FutHead app
If you are on Android get the WeFut app
And while you're at it grab the FutBin App - IOS - Android
If I’ve missed anything you'd like to know then just ask! I’ll happily answer all your questions :)
Here's sort of a beginners guide that I wrote a wee while ago. I will have missed stuff so please ask if you have any questions!
