This premise is similar to The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, which I would recommend to all you nice people.
It's basically Genesis for LotR. It describes how the world came to be, how the different races came to be, etc.
I started reading this, made it about 30% through, and it was slow moving. Then I read some reviews, and discovered the Robin Buss translation in the Penguin Classics version. SO much better! It just flows.
It isn't free - actually it is a $9 ebook. But the difference is worth it.
My username is actually derived from a character in The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. Gil-Galad. When I started playing online games, I modified it to Gilgilad and I've been using the username ever since.
Amazon sells a Kindle version (https://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-One-J-R-R-Tolkien-ebook/dp/B007978OY6?tag=hz0d-20#nav-subnav) and Apple (https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/the-lord-of-the-rings/id503019669?mt=110) has one as well.
That's what the general consensus seems to be. Would this be the one to get?

The only thing I'm confused by is the page count. Amazon says this version is 396 pages, so I feel like it's abridged in some way. Maybe it's just a typo though.
“It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured.”
An escaped convict with a false passport, Lin flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of Bombay, where he can disappear. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter the city’s hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere.
As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city’s poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power.
Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas—this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart.
In addition to the quote the other commenter shared, here's one from the letter to Milton Waldman at the start of The Silmarillion (I'm not sure which editions it's in, but it's in the Amazon preview of the Kindle version if yours doesn't have it):
>He repents in fear when the First Enemy is utterly defeated, but in the end does not do as was commanded, return to the judgement of the gods. He lingers in Middle-earth. Very slowly, beginning with fair motives: the reorganising and rehabilitation of the ruin of Middle-earth, ‘neglected by the gods’, he becomes a re-incarnation of Evil, and a thing lusting for Complete Power – and so consumed ever more fiercely with hate (especially of gods and Elves).
Combined with the other one, seems like while he was too ashamed to return to Valinor, his repentance and an attempt to do good nonetheless did last a little while before he fell heavily back into darkness again.
Shantaram by y Gregory David Roberts. This not a Peace Corps book but it is a book about a western person living at the same level of a poor Indian community, while serving to help. David Gregory Roberts calls “Shantaram” a novel, but it is strongly autobiographical, concentrating on his life in Bombay from 1981 to 1987. One of the best books I've every read.
If you have a fighting game bouncing around in your head I'd suggest reading Iron Prince it does a wonderful job of balancing fighting/story in a very addictive and engaging way.
someone actually took this meme as the premise of a book:
Mrs. Perivale and the Blue Fire Crystal
Came here to say that. Here's a link.
One of the authors is quite active on Reddit. They also have a Patreon, and are releasing chapters from Book 2 now.
Have him give Iron Prince a try. It's a very chunky book but if he likes games, it's a fantasy novel with stats, so it's like a real life scifi rpg. It's very binge-worthy. The characters attend a special academy where they learn how to develop their personalized scifi weapon for the purposes of eventually fighting hostile aliens on the frontier. Big emphasis on the sports aspect as well, as people compete with their scifi weapons in arenas for the masses, and the kids at the academy all battle one another in duels and tournaments.
The main draw is that the MC is a total underdog born with a crippling medical condition. With modern tech it's able to be treated but not cured. The MC's only hope is to prove he's worthy of being one of the few chosen to attend a special academy and get a scifi weapon (the weapons integrate with the whole body and have the potential to permanently keep his condition at bay). He works insanely hard for every small gain in the beginning and is very likeable and persistent. You just have to root for him. And when he receives his scifi device he really starts to take off, his limitless potential combined with his almost inhuman determination rocketing him to the front of his class. He makes awesome friends in the academy and the supporting cast are all great.

Highly recommend it. One of my favorite reads of 2021.
The "researchers looking for previous researchers" bit is very similar to the plot of Annihilation by Jeff VanDerMeer; it's not specifically a fungus though.
This book series features an 80 something year old grandmother who is the chosen one and goes to a magical land with her devoted butler and her 7 cats to save the universe. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B06XCV31H4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_BN86YATAFKG426KJYDTC
It might not be exactly what you are looking for, but I really enjoyed Iron Prince. Unfortunately there is only one book out for it right now, but the authors are working on more.
ok, cool! would you like to try something challenging? would love to hire you for a test bust of a character of mine: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08KGT4CLQ
(you can zoom in on the art by clicking the cover) :)
Dang, I showed up to recommend the night angel trilogy, but looks like you already read it. In that case, I'll strongly suggest any books by Will Wight. He's an absolute genius at the coming of age genre, and based on how similar our tastes are in books, I think you'll like him. (And I mean all of his books. I LOVE house of blades, and the whole cradle series is just...mwah. 10/10.) I've got a link to his amazon page ---> Here
You'll also probably enjoy Bryce O'connor's series Iron Prince. I posted a review of it on this reddit a bit ago, but I seriously loved it and I'd put money to say you would too. Here's a link to it --> Linkeroo
I hope this is of some help!

I'm finding it easy to follow actually. I'm reading the Penguin Classics edition translated by Robin Buss ( Amazon.com: The Count of Monte Cristo (Penguin Classics) eBook: Dumas, Alexandre, Buss, Robin, Buss, Robin: Kindle Store )
I haven't read other translations but I highly recommend this one. As I said, it's really easy to follow, and it also has a nice Notes section at the end. To be honest I found some of the notes to be a bit too much, but others really helped to give some needed historical context.

“The Count of Monte Cristo”...Penguin publisher Robin Buss translation (https://www.amazon.com/Count-Monte-Cristo-Penguin-Classics-ebook/dp/B002RI9KL8)
You can get a cheaper version but the Buss translation is supposed to be good (so far very enjoyable). Story is great...I love all the Kindle features which really add to the depth of understanding the history and backstory of the writing.

Someone similar here recommended Iron Prince and I've been enjoying it so far. It's not at the same quality, especially with typos, but still good.
