Or buy one of the nice queen sized air mattresses like we did...
Here is a pretty nice and affordable one at Amazon
My boyfriend asked his parents for an inflatable sleeping pad to use while backpacking. His Dad has hiked most of the AT and knows about this kind of stuff, but his mom did the shopping and got him this 11.5 lb Monstrosity. It has a built-in battery-powered pump to inflate it.
His mom is so sweet and meant well! She said she’d return it and get another if it’s not the one he wanted. I helped to explain that this would be amazing for car camping and sooo comfortable, but with backpacking you usually have to sacrifice comfort for weight savings, so you can carry it far without hurting yourself. I helped her do an Amazon search and pointed out which ones were more what he was looking for, and pointed out the weights and told her which ones were good. We picked out a nice 14 oz. inflatable sleeping pad to switch it out for, so things ended well. The kind woman just wanted her son to be comfy!
While I can't offer advice in this I can give you a link for a dope air mattress if you end up going that way instead. So I bought this air mattress on amazon for a guest staying at my place and it's pretty fucking dope. Honestly I would trade them sleeping areas if all my necessities weren't in my bedroom where I would disturb them at odd hours trying to obtain things.
Intex Comfort Plush Elevated Dura-Beam Airbed with Built-in Electric Pump, Bed Height 22", Queen https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G7H793G?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
This doesn't exactly answer your question but try a high quality air mattress (got this nice one off of Amazon) and a thick quality mattress topper. It does the job nicely. Then when you're ready to get a nicer mattress, you can just deflate and save for guests.
AirBedz Lite (PPI PV203C) Mid-Size 6'-6.5' Short Truck Bed Air Mattress (72" x 55" x 12" Inflated) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O4Z5XOA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_VJ34KSAG9SVW6YR2FXWF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I’ve got this one and it fits perfect in my 5th gen. Very comfortable even with 2 people
Makes beach day much more fun
>Has any one used a non camping blow Up mattress?
You mean these big mattress? With it's low insulation, some would say no insulation, it's a poor choice for the upcoming cooler weather, but it should be fine for late summer and early fall weather.
Are you going to fix your pad or exchange it at REI?
A couch bed like this with a couple floor plants could tie the room together.
We use the SoundAsleep brand air mattress, and then we threw a cheap mattress topper on it for additional comfort.
It is honestly just as comfortable as our main Saatva mattress and holds up really well. We almost always keep it out full-time, and have to "top it up" with air maybe once a month if it isn't being slept on daily. Once a week if it is being used. Best part is the entire set-up (air mattress, topper, and Amazon Basics foldable bed frame) can slide into the back of the closet.
Thanks for your reply. Those seem like major enough cons for me to opt for an all-in-one mattress first, like option 1 outlines above. Thoughts?
The Nest Sparrow isn't in my budget.
I may need temporary bedding at this point. You seem to recommend the Tempur topper. Would that work well atop an inflatable bed such as this Intex Comfort Plush. Would I even need a topper depending on how long it takes to find a suitable mattress?
I'm open to any other ideas or suggestions you may have.
One of my friends has this mattress and loves it. Its very tall and feels a lot more like a real bed rather than sleeping on the ground. https://www.amazon.com/Intex-Elevated-Dura-Beam-Internal-Electric/dp/B0869HGSVL/ref=sr_1_4?crid=GOPKVS2X0I4D&keywords=raised%2Bair%2Bmattress&qid=1659027612&sprefix=raised%2Bair%2Bmattress%2Caps%2C63&sr=8-4&th=1
Summer only. We've tried a friend's inflatable sleep mat and it was super uncomfortable. What would you recommend instead of an air mattress? Would a thicker air mattress like this be better? https://www.amazon.ca/Intex-Elevated-Dura-Beam-Internal-Electric/dp/B0869HGSVL
I highly recommend this mattress: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FAW4O0A/
I use a queen size, and most folks in our camp have either the queen size or a twin of the same brand in their yurt. If you want more comfort for two people, get two twins next to one another, or a king if you have space in your yurt.
You need access to power to inflate them, but they are really really good thanks to how thick they are.
Very comfortable sleeping for two for a week. You can feel the mattress move underneath you a little bit when the other person turns around in the bed, but it's not too bad. I crawl into bed without waking up my partner and vice versa multiple times throughout the week
Nobody believes me but an air bed. Like this: Amazon.
Used to have a Sleep Number Bed but I like this more. Replace it about every 18 months.
Inflate it to however hard you want it depending on how you're feeling.
I’ve always had the same issues with air mattresses. My friend had good luck with a SoundAsleep air mattress, so I bought one. I’ve had it 5 yrs now. It keeps air through the night. I’ve never had a leak.
SoundAsleep Dream Series Air Mattress with ComfortCoil Technology & Internal High Capacity Pump - Queen Size https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FAW4O0A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GFTQQ9BP8R6GE1YXN9NQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I will never buy another heavy bed. Empty nester here...my sons took their beds, so I bought these: https://www.amazon.com/SoundAsleep-Mattress-ComfortCoil-Technology-Internal/dp/B00FAW4O0A/ref=sr_1_9?crid=3765B0D15BW1G&keywords=air%2Bmattress%2Bwith%2Bbuilt%2Bin%2Bpump&qid=1642612219&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011&rnid=2470954011...
Now my sons want one. Inflatable air-mattress with built in pump. OMG, so comfortable. You can adjust the firmness level. Hope this helps.
Just go with an air mattress. This specific model is $79.99. I can personally vouch for it - I used this model + a memory foam topper (also from Amazon) for over a year before upgrading to a Purple mattress. You can easily carry it and it can be easily moved with you. And it is pretty durable.
Yes. I use this one with my Great Dane Lab mix and I’ve never had any issues. It’s an extra thick lining and always does the trick for me and him. Lightspeed Outdoors 2 Person PVC-Free Air Bed Mattress for Camping and Travel https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CWZE642/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_XDSQEXDHS0ECZ8NKM87P?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I have the Lightspeed Outdoors equivalent mattress for when I'm car camping and I LOVE IT. The TPU material doesn't stretch and sag like cheap PVC air mattresses, I've had it stay firm for three nights in a row without adding any air. It even includes a battery-powered pump and a giant storage bag that fits the whole kit easily (no folding and wrestling into a tiny bag). I sound like a shill but it totally changed my car-camping experience.
I have two herniated discs in my back and I use this I’ve never slept better and it doesn’t hurt my back. I slept for a week on a cot by itself and I was curled over like a letter C and then next trip I tried a pad on the cot and it was still too hard on my back.
Yes, we did put an air mattress in a car- a tiny Prius, too. We built a frame in the back. It has a hinge on it, and a section flips over- so we can push the seats forward and move some boxes on the floor behind the seats. The platform rests on top of the boxes. It was actually insanely comfortable. That air mattress was just a basic cheap one from Target.
But- the nice one goes in the tent (I say “car camping” because the car is next to the tent, as opposed to hike-in camping). I got it a while ago, so I can’t remember details, but it’s a beast. Like at least 6 inches tall. Some cozy blankets and pillows from home, and both of us sleep like babies.
Edit: I think it’s this one
When I was pretty darn broke but needed a mattress, I got a decent (not great, but decent) quality air mattress and slept on that for over a year. It was not ideal but it was actually pretty decent and comfy once I got used to the bounciness of it. This is the one I had, it's $50 on Amazon, has an internal pump so I could add more air when it started to deflate a bit, and it's raised up so it's about the height of a regular mattress on a platform bed.
If that's too pricey and you have or know someone who has one of those little battery operated air mattress pumps, you can get a 9 inch thick/tall queen sized air mattress for about $15 at Walmart. Twin size is cheaper, but I like the queen because it gives me more room to roll around.
Exactly why I always carry the 22" air mattress. Yeah it's weighs 21 pounds but it's a luxury item I don't mind lugging around.
I am in the same boat. When I was a teen, I was able to sleep on anything. Now I can't get comfortable, takes a long time to get to sleep and I wake up with lower back pain.
I ended up getting a large intex mattress. It's bulky but I sleep very well.
This is what I used last year and I loved it, 10/9 would recommend https://www.amazon.com/Raised-Airbed-Built-Electric-Height/dp/B000M0MJU2/ref=as_li_ss_tl?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=d1a50877-312f-48b7-9d1a-8a8a5b6381f2&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-2&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=5550342011&pf_rd_m=ATVPD...
I'm debating on making space for one of these or a couple of these. The ability to lay down off the ground and outside a tent would be nice.
We have put up out-of-town guests at a friend's house, if you have any close friends with spare bedrooms in larger homes who wouldn't mind sharing. I have a friend with a large basement with a bathroom and bedroom that she would let me use for my older family, they're there basically to shower/sleep only.
For the kid brother and younger guests who don't mind roughing it and have good joints and backs, they get a very nice air mattress in the squishy gaming room. This is the air mattress, it was worth every penny and is super comfortable. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FAW4O0A
Mine has seen regular and some heavy use on and off the playa since 2014. Even hosted an extended 5 person cuddle puddle during one of those frigid nights in 2015.
