Start reading The Dresden Files
Book 16 isn't due out until 2015, so you may be able to catch up in time.
This is very much a "just trust me". Book 1 isn't the best of the series, but everyone has to start somewhere. Very quickly it becomes an addiction.

For Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard, business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name.
You will note that he was forced to bring Holmes back to life. He tried to get around it by charging what he thought was an outlandish price.. but the publishers anted up and Sherlock went on to solve many more cases. As to where to start, well most of Holmes' cases start with a knock on the door down stairs. They were mostly all published as short stories in magazines and are available in a two volume collection by several publishers. Here is a mass market edition that includes all the stories up until Doyle's death. There have been a couple of things that came to light later, mostly requiring completion that have been published. it is $9.99 on Amazon new. And then there all the works done by other authors once Sherlock passed into public domain, and there are all the movies....television and radio shows.. There are over 700 radio adaptations in English alone, which include both stories from the original canon and new adventures. As a pipe smoker reading the stories you will note that Holmes generally smokes a 'greasy clay' or a 'cherrywood' pipe, keeps his shag cut tobacco in a Persian slipper on the mantle of his apartment. On stage first, and then in the movies later, the actors sought something that could be easily identified as a tobacco pipe at a distance, even from the balcony, and chose a calabash pipe. With all the stories, you can find Holmes in his natural Victorian times, then he appeared in contemporary times (WW2 was the first of these I think), and even in the future, as in Star Trek NG. think I will listen to an episode or two from Olde Time Radio tonight, while I putter around.
That's true. I was glib.
What I'd actually want to see is an experienced prosecutor like Harris appointed to AG with her number 1 responsibility being the investigation into corruption if the Trump administration
Not Biden personally running down leads or anything
You mean the memes about the Obama-Biden bromance?
You get that those were not making fun of Biden but celebrating the bromance right?
Also, if you really want to be entertained by the Biden Obama friendship someone also wrote crime novels about them.
You're welcome.
I have trouble listening to the Dresden books. It's just so breathy that it annoys me.
You can hear a sample here: Amazon
The numerous audible inhales and exhales just grate on me.
Hmmm. 14-year old me ate it all up. I can't agree or disagree with your comment without re-reading the book myself now that I'm much older.
Another fantasy series, this time not aimed at a specific age group, is the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. It not being aimed at teens should fix the dialogue sounding weird to you. Harry Dresden is wizard private investigator in Chicago, but he'll accept work from non-magic clients to. He has more common sense than most MCs. The only downside is it isn't an isekai at all. The genre is called urban fantasy. Fantasy is better than isekai, IMO.
If you've seen {Ancient Magus Bride} they are both inspired by the same IRL myths about fairies and nature magic.
Let's say a clue led him to some place that had another wizard. Instead of casting fireballs at eachother to see who had stronger magic he would smear the chalk of the spell circle a little with his foot and physically punch the other guy because the other guy looked like he spent all his time training magic instead of exercising.
Here's an Amazon link for a better summary.
Maybe the Flavia de Luce series?
I forget the correct order though.
28 freaking dollars!? I got the audiobook for $15.
I can understand people being annoyed at the short length for that price. I can't understand why you'd pay that price when Amazon is selling the hardback for less than $18 though.

Seems like both are doing "that Black Friday thing where they jack up the price and then put in on discount so you feel like you got a deal"
Oregairu is good as some comments have mentioned. Otherwise if you like Monogatari and its writing style you will like Zaregoto. Vol 3 is going to come out in English this fall.
I just got done reading the first book in the Aurora Teagarden series by Charlaine Harris. Real Murders (Aurora Teagarden Mysteries, Book 1) http://www.amazon.com/Real-Murders-Aurora-Teagarden-Mysteries/dp/0425218716. It was good, but i really like Charlaines books. (Sookie Stackhouse novels, Grave Series)
Currently im reading http://www.amazon.com/Walk-Woods-Rediscovering-America-Appalachian/dp/0307279464 and n its super good as well.. very comical!
You can't go wrong with Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep or any of the Phillip Marlowe characters.
I haven't read a classic rpg fantasy story in years. But if you're looking for something different check out The Dresden Files and The InCryptid Series.
If you check them out I'd recommend getting the first three Dresden books right off the bat (the author hits his stride in Book 3, it marks a huge increase in writing quality and the quality was already pretty darn good). For InCryptid, grab the first two. They're really good (it took me a few chapters to really get into the first book but once I got momentum I couldn't put it down) and I'm waiting on the delivery of the next two =).
Check out the Flavia de Luce mysteries by Alan Bradley. While they do feature murder they're light, humorous, and quick reads. There are only 4 currently in print, but I think there'll be something like 7 in total. Bradley is pushing them out pretty quick.
If you are looking for an action-packed easy-read then try out the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Almost ideal for reading when not quite up to 100% in recovery.
You should definitely check out Dresden Files. Please dont base it on the horrible TV series they made the books are fantastic. http://www.amazon.com/Storm-Front-Dresden-Files-Book/dp/0451457811/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291817709&sr=8-1 also the audio books are great, read by James Marsters.
Check out some old noir stuff like The Big Sleep. Shady boards, sketchy characters, scary hitmen... this is where it all started.
Another vote for the Southern Vampire/True Blood series, though if she doesn't want to spoil herself for the show I really like the Aurora Teagarden books, which are also by Charlaine Harris.
If she likes crime/detective novels, I really like the Alex Delaware series by Jonathan Kellerman. They're interesting plots and pretty quick reads.
