NEVER FORGET - the way he was used by the military for propaganda, how they burned his uniform and journal, how they lied about and covered up his death by friendly fire.

Big ups to his brother for calling out the bullshit at his funeral.
Why they were so happy when NFL player Pat Tillman joined up and became a ranger. Also why they covered up his death being from friendly fire. Read Where Men Win Glory. It's a great book

Amazing book on the 1st and 2nd Chechen war. Gave guys a bunch of old soviet equipment, not enough food or other supplies, told them to go off and fight Chechens.
They ended up having to trade gear to the Chechens just to have something to eat.
It was gloomy in writing as well. I read Arkady Babchenko's "One Soldier's War". Great read and firsthand account of the conflicts, but graphic and depressing. I usually had to read a chapter of another book before I turned out the light because I didn't want to keep thinking about it.
I mentioned this below, but I’d just like to add to the top comment that Babchenko’s memoir of the Chechen War, ‘One soldier’s war’, is available in English translation, bloody well-written and a fascinating soldier’s-eye-view of a brutal, filthy and complicated conflict. (Not saying all wars aren’t like that, but this one seems to have under the radar for a lot of people, also because the Russian government hasn’t been open about the death toll).
Sorry for hijacking the top comment, but I’d just like people to remember his work. Honestly, I read the book years ago and I can still remember lines from it to this day. There’s this part where he talks about the sheer terror he feels in the middle of a particular battle, and how the land must be so irradiated with people’s terror and pain that he can’t believe anything will ever grow there. Could be a metaphor for modern Russia to be honest.
I just got to an interesting part of the book, where the south is so desperate to win they promised slaves their freedom if they would fight for the south. That is how desperate they become. They undermined their entire reason for fighting to get one win. And they didn't get it. It was far too late. But I am sure you know the rest.
Edit: word
Here's the official summary of his book being sold on Amazon:
>In Where Men Win Glory, Jon Krakauer draws on Tillman’s journals and letters, interviews with his wife and friends, conversations with the soldiers who served alongside him, and extensive research on the ground in Afghanistan to render an intricate mosaic of this driven, complex, and uncommonly compelling figure as well as the definitive account of the events and actions that led to his death. https://www.amazon.com/Where-Men-Win-Glory-Odyssey/dp/030738604X
Why are you such a proudly ignorant asshole? The only reason these investigations fucking happened you ignorant shit was because the family was questioning the inconsistencies and because they didn't back down they exposed the real story. Seriously, did you know anything about this topic before coming into this thread?
> You can't fix the crop of humans that is currently broken.
This is bullshit. Below is a link to a memoir by Ishmael Beah. The dude was a child soldier at 12 years old, was rescued by UNICEF, and rehabilitated. He graduated from college, published several books, and has spoken at the UN. Im very much all for not creating new sociopaths but let us not act like the only way to deal with broken among us is to put a bullet in their heads.

A Long Way Gone Memoirs of a Boy Soldier (2007) by Ishmael Beah. Firsthand account of Beah's time as a child soldier during the civil war in Sierra Leone (1990s) The last few pages, I just read one per day, an effort to delay the inevitable ending of a good book. *edited link from wiki to amazon

I HIGHLY recommend reading it. I absolutely loved it, such a great story but so horrible to have happened
“Lincoln had a cabinet of yes men”— Ha Ha…he had quite a mix of political rivals occupying many of the most prominent post. If someone only sat down and wrote a book on that topic. Oh that’s right, someone did….

> Dude, they left because they wanted continue owning slaves. It's explicitly stated in the first paragraph of every single secession declaration with the sole exception being Texas, who mentioned it at the end of their declaration. > > Source: me, I checked a couple years ago during another one of these "debates".

Have wanted to visit since I learned some of the rich (and tragic) history of this place in this amazing book, ‘Blood and Thunder’ by Hampton Sides. https://www.amazon.com/Blood-Thunder-Carson-Conquest-American/dp/1400031109

There’s a great book about his story called, “Where Men Win Glory”. It goes deep into his anti-war stances but also sheds some light on just how shady and “unknown” his death truly was.

Is this a joke?
Lincoln is CLEARLY one of the worst three presidents.

>I think for to long Russia and the US have not communicated well. it has bred mistrust and now dislike. Putin had his selfish reasons for encouraging it. who would have thought I would long for the good old days of the USSR/USA level of friendship.
Haha you're so funny and original and funny.
I'll respond with my favorite Abraham Lincoln quote. You can find it here.
We read a child soldier memoir in high school. It's not really academic, but if your thesis is more personal or incorporates anecdotal evidence, it might be worth checking out: https://www.amazon.com/Long-Way-Gone-Memoirs-Soldier/dp/0374531269
> this was 100% their goal in that essay that was released.
Yes. Jon Krakauer goes into this in his book, "Where Men Win Glory". We played right into their hands.
FWIW the memoir One Soldier’s War is amazing... details the life of a Russian conscript, then infantry radioman, and finally contract soldier in both Chechen wars. Brutal stuff. The audiobook version is great.
Here's a wiki article about it.
If you want an in-depth, fascinating, and horrifying look at Russian army hazing and the disaster of the Chechen wars, check out "One Soldier's War" by Arkady Babchenko.
I'm not sure whether it's an entirely trustworthy book, but its an excellent chronicle nonetheless.
Depending on how far away the bullet (or minie-ball or whatever) got fired, you might just be fine.
An excerpt from a US Dragoon's journal that I got from reading this book reports how he got shot in the chest during fighting in California, and was bruised as a result. The bullet didn't even break the skin.
That must have been because the shot slows down over distance. I guess modern bullets are fast enough that slow-down doesn't much affect their lethality (then again, what do I know?), but earlier guns didn't.
Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln is a personal fav. Focuses on the politics of the war and Lincoln, both of which are a good lens on the war and what came before/after.
Seriously, read this. You'll thank me. Living a lie based on information shoved down your throat by those who wish to control you is no life to live.

You're going to ruffle some feathers and your going to run into bigger fish that will put you in your place as well. But people forgive charisma and boldness all the time, so it will balance itself out. Look at Pat Tillman. Gentle, down to earth alpha and amongst his special forces team I'm sure he was just one of the guys. Of course you can be 100af and still be respectable. Maybe try reading No More Mr. Nice Guy. Or read up a bit more on Tillman. Jon Krakauer has a good book on him; It's called Where Men Win Glory.
I didn't write it, Thomas DiLorenzo did. Do you presume to have a higher level of historical knowledge regarding Lincoln than he? Have you read the book?
If you would like to learn more about the real history of the Civil War, read Thomas di Lorenzo's The Real Lincoln
Do you like history? I read the big Lincoln book, Team of Rivals. It took forever but man was it worth it. I learned so much and the book really humanized Lincoln for me. When I finished I decided to just read it again, I enjoyed it so much.
I've mostly just read textbooks and biographies.
But I'm currently reading "Team of Rivals" and it's pretty damned interesting.
