My thoughts as well.
OP should get some of this and spray all of the blades.
Turn anything that changes color in to the local police and let them know where he got the item from.
I did a water test that I purchased from amazon that tests for bacteria, lead, pesticides, nitrites/nitrates, chlorine, hardness, and pH and everything was 100% safe.
EDIT: here is the pack I used: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FBMAVQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Just a heads up since apparently no one here seems to know where to look for Ferric Chloride and has apparently never heard of Amazon.
MG Chemicals 415 Ferric Chloride Liquid, 1 Quart Bottle, Dark Brown https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005T8Y20W/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_Ma3nxbSXG8SAQ
A liter is $15ish and will go a very very long way with etching knives.
Just be sure you do some research on safe handling. Use plastic containers not metal or glass. And be careful. It's a relatively safe and weak acid. But it's still acid and can hurt you if handled poorly.
Alright here we go
2 i get my ferric chloride off Amazon Here’s the exact stuff I use MG Chemicals 415 Ferric Chloride Copper Etchant Solution, 945mL Liquid Bottle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005T8Y20W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_cw1lDbFSXD42R
3 usually people use ceramic “pellets” but basically anything hard will work the bigger harder and sharper the stones or bits are the tougher the finish.
4 for the stoning part take the blade and stick it into a vibratory tumbler or a rock tumbler I believe with some water for how ever long. Longer is more scratches less time is a less scratched look. The tumbler can be found for about $55 at harbor freight https://www.harborfreight.com/5-lb-metal-vibrator-tumbler-67617.html
A fair price for that would be about $250-$300 but if you get some good fishing spots and because it’s for a buddy I’d charge $200-$225 probably up to you
Hope this helps
I used a warm mason jar full of This . Warming it up mitigates the violent reaction you get while doing this. But the fumes produced are still abundant and incredibly dangerous. Some really nasty stuff you’re working with to get this result
> And can i just find benzene in a pure state in some place that sells chemical compounds?
https://www.amazon.com/Benzene-Thiophene-Free-500ml-16oz/dp/B00PYWJULE
> Is that the frame/receiver you mentioned?
Yeah. For most pistols, it's the frame. For rifles, it's usually the lower receiver.
For example, an AR-15 lower receiver that is 80% or less finished doesn't have a serial number. You can buy it, spend 20 minutes with a CNC machine to finish it, and now you've got a fully functional and unregistered lower. You can buy the rest of the parts without needing to go through a FFL. It's also completely legal, as long as you don't sell it.
nice. Tips: you can keep Ferric Chloride solution in a ice cream bucket, i have had mine in one for a few months with no problems. also you can also use a soda bottle for dipping the blade.
For engraving you cant go wrong with a rotary tool as its the easiest way to do engravings. ghaa my engraving tip busted well i was doing the engraving on my latest blade as i developed a makers mark and put it on all my blades. so well I got it on it I screwed up the engraving so I did not do the best i could.
also amazon sells ferric chloride so here's a link: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B005T8Y20W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
For etching resist you can use acrylic paint and I hear you can use electrical tape but have not tried it yet.
If you're that worried about tap water in your location, test it. You can get water testing kits very easily for cheap.
First Alert WT1 Drinking Water Test Kit https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000FBMAVQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_P46NCbF2KGCJS
If you're still worried, you can install water filters for your whole home, or even just for your kitchen tap.
The environmental damage done by single use water bottles is truly immense.
buy some luminol and a blacklight.
https://www.amazon.com/2-Methyl-2-butanol-97-5-1L-tert-Amyl-Alcohol/dp/B00UI3SYQ6
Here's the antidote, drink it all at once
Looking in the realm of chemistry now. I need to find something safe and measurable. Just as some sort of idea, things like this are for sale:
can i use this link for " Lime (Ca(OH2) " ?
Amazon. This is the one I personally use & so far works great. Coir, verm & gyspum.
I have not yet. How much would i add? Whats its effectiveness And what is the mechanism of action here that stops it? And to be clear its this stuff right? https://www.amazon.com/HiMedia-GRM718-500G-Calcium-Hydroxide-Purified/dp/B01BXZOSLM/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=calcium+hydroxide&qid=1604504560&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011&rnid=2470954011&rps=1&sr=8-3
I used some circuit board etcher from Amazon (Ferric Chloride). I cleaned the clip with acetone, dipped it in a 70% acid / 30% water mixture for about 20 seconds, let it air drip for 10 secs, rinsed in the tap and repeated twice. Then I dryed it well and sprayed it once with gun oil. Looks great and feels great!
“Drug bad, therefore illegal” IS NOT LOGIC.
Sorry for the caps, but i’m just getting sick of seeing this on this sub. The alcohol industry is worth $1.3 trillion fucking dollars. $1.3 trillion!! And you want to give black market groups this economic opportunity. With this kind of money, cartels would be more powerful than a vast majority of countries. Instead of ruling from the shadows like they do now, corrupting politicians and silently killing opponents, they could just straight up take over countries. Latin america in particular would get straight up annexed. Why is this cool and good to you?
Furthermore, people would start drinking 2m2b. Some context here - ever heard of spice? Synthetic cannabinoids? These are part of a class of drugs called “research chemicals”. Research chemicals are created by overseas scientists (mostly chinese). What they do is take illegal drugs, and slightly tweak them, producing an analogue of the drug that’s also psychoactive. These analogues are technically legal, simply because politicians don’t know about them. And 2m2b is an analogue of ethyl alcohol. And look, you can buy this shit legally, on amazon. $165 for a liter sounds steep, but a mere 3 milliliters will have you drunk for 12 hours. That’s the potency we’re talking. People would be chugging this shit left and right, and because nobody teaches you the potency, a lot would learn the hard way, drinking 2m2b like it’s ethyl alcohol and dying. Why is this cool and good to you?
Ferric chloride is insanely effective and easy/fun to work with
A quick acid bath and "stone-wash" the blade w/ some gravel in a may jar by hand (shake TF out of it) and sharpen.
Too expensive and requires a corporate account doesn't mean "not credible" I think what you mean is hard to get for an amature chemist which is not the same thing as "can no longer be purchased"
Here's an Amazon link for benzene https://www.amazon.com/Benzene-Thiophene-Free-500ml-16oz/dp/B00PYWJULE
No idea if they will actually ship it to you though. The CAS looked correct on the picture but who knows.
just get some on amazon, it'll save you a lot of trouble and time. https://www.amazon.com/MG-Chemicals-Chloride-Etchant-Solution/dp/B005T8Y20W/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=ferric+chloride&qid=1599357489&sprefix=ferric&sr=8-3
Sure thing bud, always happy to help! I figure the more people that know how, the more info for others to get, and hopefully they create something cool they can teach me.
I got mine of Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005T8Y20W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 is what I use.
I just use a BenzoMatic torch too. Also, orientation of the piece as it hits the FC will dictate the "pattern direction". So if you dip the show side, starting with either the blade or clip end, the waves will kind of "go across the grain". If you dip it long ways, the waves will go the full length of the piece.
Thanks man. I responded up top but I could not find it local either

I buy from Amazon and then grind to the right mesh as needed. Also roll for fancy silky-smooth spherical particles. ;)
I’m probably on several watchlists...
I ordered a bottle from Amazon a while back. Here's the link
Calcium sulfate dihydrate, better known as gypsum, can be bought from Amazon. Magnesium sulfate, better known as Epsom salt, can be found in pharmacies but also Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LETYN6 (Larger bags are cheaper per pound but even 1lb lasts a long time)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074H76RYX/ (Many Epsom salt products have additives, best to check first)
Oh! My bad, you are right.
OP said 'fast' though and shipping it somewhere doesn't do that.
here is a strip test that does lead: https://www.amazon.com/First-Alert-WT1-Drinking-Water/dp/B000FBMAVQ
Dead body smell is very distinct. If you really want piece of mind, buy some luminol and a black light.
