Yup this is exactly it, though I actually bought these egg crate panels off amazon that were the right size that I needed it already, so I didn't have to cut them. I also bought a PVC pipe cutter ($14 at Home Depot) to be able to cut the PVC at whatever size I want. Then it's just a matter of figuring out what size and how tall you want it.
If you prefer a glass lid, Amazon has some glass lids you could purchase online, just check the dimensions. Otherwise I've seen some people do egg crate, like this or this. You can use plastic wrap. There's also such a thing called plastic canvas, which is similar to egg crate I think but a lil thinner and more flexible? I think, haven't used it personally, it's usually used to help with like sewing crafts.
As a quick tip, you can move the filter media from his previous tank's filter to his new filter to make sure you maintain the cycle. And make sure the fake plants aren't sharp, but if you're just reusing them and he hasn't had an issue yet it should be fine.
From your answers to the question, it seems like you don't have a water testing kit. By the time your parameters (high nitrates, presence of ammonia/nitrite) start affecting your fish, that is too late as that means it is already causing damage to your fish. I really recommend buying the API Freshwater Master Test kit. In my experience you can buy the kit for cheaper on Amazon than you would in-store.
I’d get a lid, best one I have tried is egg crate, it’s affordable as well. You can get it from hardware stores.
This is what it looks like -https://www.amazon.ca/OBANGONG-Divider-Louvre-Aquarium-Isolation/dp/B07CBSG6Y5/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=1FTO445PSTVCZ&keywords=Egg+Crate+light&qid=1662636977&refinements=p_85%3A5690392011&rnid=5690384011&rps=1&sprefix=egg+c...
No. It will dissolve in the water.
Make hills using “egg crate” - cut the pieces and layer them like a pyramid. I use zip ties to hold all the pieces together. 4Pcs Aquarium Fish Tank Bottom Isolation, Black Grid Divider Tray Egg Crate Louvre for Mixed Breeding https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07WRMC786/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_6FR8ZG3NZNAPTEXGV9W3
I bought these tank dividers, and used a total of 12. I stacked 3 vertically, and sandwiched 2 layers of fine netting between another stack of 3, and superglued them together. Then I did that again to get a second divider.
I used Loctite aquarium safe silicone to glue the dividers into the tank and let things sit for about a week because 1. I was very busy and 2. I wanted to be absolutely sure all the fumes were gone. They're not removable, but I wanted to make them solid enough that I wouldn't tear or dislodge them while gravel vacuuming.
Left gravel is basic Imagitarium river rock. Center is Seachem Fluorite Red gravel. Right is Seachem Fluorite Black sand, but I don't like the texture as much and may end up changing to a larger gravel.
The leftmost and rightmost gravel, most of the driftwood, and all of the filters and plants came right out of my previous tanks so cycling was not an issue at all.
You can find the moss balls on Amazon. I recommended making sure it's not a fake one with metal wires but real full balls. The vendor I bought it from went under, but you can find them.
I put them in this breeder. And used some zip ties to keep it shut. It just hangs out at the bottom of the tank. It works great.

Yeh it works much better using something to rise it up. It evenly distributes the weight of the scape on the bottom and gives it a much nicer look and more of a natural scape. I have even seen some people put bio media in the riser. I just put a mixture of lava rock and river rock for bacteria growth.
Here’s the one I bought

The tension at the bottom was the main problem I couldn't figure out with that design, so I will consider what you said about it.
I asked this in another sub and they said to use tank dividers with suction cups to hold it in place. Something like this, and to just heat it up and bend it so that it forms a curve that'll fit into the corner. What do you think about doing it that way?
Baby gates, egg crate for areas you don’t want to reach, but can’t baby gate, and just not leaving your kid alone in an area with expensive stuff.
That was the same problem I had with my floating dock! First I got a second floating dock to put under the first one to give it more buoyancy, but eventually my turtle grew out of that too. So I bought some egg crate egg crate to make a solid platform, there was even some extra to make a bed for him where he only need to stick his head up to breathe (he sleeps on it everynight :) ) But right now I put a ten gallon ontop of his 60 gallon, smashed out a side of glass for his lights and put a ramp for him to crawl up. He's got like a second floor to his tank now lol. But if you dont want to do all the DIY involved with those they make specific dry docks to put ontop of tanks for turtles, but some of them can be quite expensive.
I would recommend getting mlre tanks if space allows. Even just spending 10 bucks on big box store dollar a gallon aqueon rimmed tank.
People call them egg crates. I found these on amazon. The ones I got had to be modified to snap them together. Here is the link although I would probably look at other ones than these, but it will get you going in the right direction.

Sure! Here's a better shot of it.
The legs are made out of PVC pipe with some elbows. Then I wrapped it with some plastic mesh I found on amazon. The top is this egg crate that I got on Amazon as well. The back is supported with suction cups and zip ties. The top has reptile carpet that I bought from Petsmart and zip tied it to the egg crate. Then I put a fake plant suction cupped to the side of the tank as my final touch.
It's worked well for me so far, my Sideneck spends basically all afternoon up there most days.
I found them on amazon. I have them held together with zip ties because just one doesn't quite cover the top of my tank.
I also had problems before with finding flies floating in my tank water. This is a great solution because the flies don't seem to want to crawl through the holes and I can still give my tank the open air I personally like for it.
Theres also the possibility of growing surface plants on top and letting the roots dangle through into the water for better filtration (especially since I'm doing a filterless tank)
I’ve never had a fluval so I can’t comment on the cleaning process but the cascades are very simple. The impeller comes out easily for cleaning. I’d imagine the fluval is the same.
The basking platform can be made with egg crate and zip ties.
10 Gallon Aqarium Divider with Suction Cups - Fish Tank Divider Perfect for Betas https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079NXNZ8L/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OtLIFbBQHMW0T Amazon, I bought 2, and sawed off the sides of the suction cups I didn’t want.
if i may make a suggestion, friends have used these to great execution. you can get em all over and build em inmultiple , a friend made a multi bay one out of these for the 00 gundam models.
It depends. I’d say use egg crate thingies if you have pointy rocks and not a lot of substrate. If your substrate is thick enough and the rocks dont touch the the bottom of the glass at a weird angle i don’t think it’s necessary. Also depends on aquarium size. A 5 gallon with like 1-2 rocks is less problematic than a lets say 20 gallon rimless with a ton of rocks, in my opinion. That link is what I have for the Domino without the divider in the middle, How long would you leave the Domino in it before reintroducing?
