Patient 3 the audiobook will be coming out on Audible, iTunes, and Amazon in a week! Check below for premise and link.
In the near future, a mysterious neurological disorder infects one in fifty thousand people and spreads when the host is conscious and active. Cerebral Nervorum quickly leads to the degradation of the individual’s motor functions and memory until an inevitable death finds them days later. Unable to afford gene editing therapy to tame this disease, Michael elects to take the route of being placed into a medically induced coma with the support of his fiancée Eve. This is the common treatment option for the lower and middle class of society to cope until a cure is developed and viable for the general population.
Several years later, Michael and five other patients awaken to a world where an alien force has nearly wiped out the inhabitants of Earth and flattened its cities. The group faces a deadly game of cat and mouse from these beings and simultaneously a race against the clock from the fatal disease eating away at their minds and bodies. Michael and the patients learn there is an underground sanctuary where survivors are gathering a few miles away. What keeps Michael going is an audio journal Eve left for him during his hospital stay. It allows him to hear his love’s voice and gives glimpses of the past and events leading up to the invasion as he traverses the wasteland of the city in search of the human encampment.
If you like an Asian setting, you might enjoy The Glint of the Luopan by Sally Feng. It's about a woman who's looking for her dad and stumbles into a magical China with sky cities and a secret society. Romance only plays a minor role:

If you like literary speculative fiction, check out The Glint of the Luopan: https://www.amazon.com/-/de/dp/B0BKY2KQ15/
It's about a young woman looking for her Dad and stumbling into a magical China.
If you like Urban Fantasy, The Glint of the Luopan is partially set in China: https://www.amazon.com/-/de/dp/B0BKY2KQ15/
It's a weird China though, with cities in the sky. It's critical of Chinese society.
In The Glint of the Luopan, the LI Suresh is actually dead (in a weird way, won't spoiler here): https://www.amazon.com/-/de/dp/B0BKY2KQ15/
If you like Urban Fantasy partially set in Asia...

Some people have described it as a "journey down the rabbit hole". The main character has lost most of her memories, and tries to get them back with the help of drugs. And then she stumbles into an alternate China with sky cities, but the reader can still not be sure if it's not just in her mind...

It starts out in reality and then gets weirder and weirder, including sky cities, psychic spies and a secret society.
If you like an Asian setting, you might enjoy The Glint of the Luopan by Sally Feng. It's about a woman who's looking for her dad and stumbles into a magical China with sky cities and a secret society. Romance only plays a minor role, and the writing style is not too "serious":

Sounds like you might like The Glint of the Luopan by Sally Feng! It features a minimal romantic plot and quite particular character dynamics between the MC and her romantic interest. The MC can also be considered an outsider since she lost her memory. It's not really set in space, but the 2nd part is set in an alternative China with sky cities:

I see we have a similar taste. I also like "The End of Mr Y" though Scarlett Thomas isn't very well-known. I've recently read "The Glint of the Luopan" by Sally Feng which was an interesting mix of concepts like psychic espionage and remote viewing, partially set in Asia: https://www.amazon.com/Glint-Luopan-journey-through-Beijing-ebook/dp/B0BKY2KQ15/ You have a bit of romance, but you also have the sci-fi elements.
If you enjoy Urban Fantasy with an Asian setting, I recently read this relatively new novel "The Glint of the Luopan": https://www.amazon.com/Glint-Luopan-journey-through-Beijing-ebook/dp/B0BKY2KQ15/
It's got a love story and is partially set in China, albeit a modern one. It also features interesting topics like remote viewing and psychic espionage, which lends it a certain X-Files flair.
I really enjoyed reading "The Glint of the Luopan" by Sally Feng. It's partially set in China and features some interesting concepts like pychic spies and remote viewing, mixed up with Daoism and the I Ging: https://www.amazon.de/Glint-Luopan-journey-through-Beijing-ebook/dp/B0BKY2KQ15/

Not magic but close, Street Cultivation https://www.amazon.com/Street-Cultivation-Sarah-Lin-ebook/dp/B07W9J75R3 is about a modern day world where cultivation cores exist and are part of society and technology, but otherwise is very similar to modern world.

The best cultivation system I've ever read in a cultivation novel, also helps that other aspects such as character development and world building is top tier too.
As usual, I had the best of intentions about contacting you, then it got lost in the chaos of my work. I also have something coming out in December:

To offset the process of my heavy epic fantasy, I'm planning this series to hopefully feel light, fast, and fun. More info at the link if anyone is interested!

I wrote a book with a new take on the alien invasion genre, check it :)

I second the mention of Kindle Unlimited: it isn't for me personally but more is available there than you might expect and it's good page/dollar value.
One of my favorites is 1000+ for a pretty good price: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0856ZMG9Z/
TBS has a fascinating Asian-inspired world and my favorite subversion of the heroic archetype. Can't say for sure if you'd like it but it's definitely epic fantasy!
Well, if you're asking, I'd put forward my own series: The Brightest Shadow. It doesn't have the breadth of Malazan, but it does range across nations with numerous factions. There are elements of horror and martial fantasy as well, so I think it has potential to be of interest to you.
Regardless, hope you find some good series to read!
