Ive found neoprene knee sleeves do the trick for me without being overly cumbersome: they're all over amazon but here's a link:
OP, I've had several flare ups of runner's knee, and both times could still feel *something* when I started back running. But I'm always hyper aware of/anxious about my body coming off an injury, so every twinge seems magnified.
I think the most important question isn't can you still feel a twinge in your knee, but is running aggravating that twinge? If the general trend is that your knee is feeling better and stronger, and that trend isn't greatly affected by the addition of running (which should be exclusively easy for at least the first week or so!) then you're probably fine to run on it, imo.
It might also be worth using a compression sleeve as you get back into it. I've been v impressed with this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019ZK0WS0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I always wear short sleeves on good grass, otherwise I always wear long sleeves. On good turf I don't find that pads matter, but on bad turf or bad grass I always wear elbow pads under my long sleeve jersey. I swear by these and they're slim enough to fit under your jersey while giving you normal range of motion:
I wear these. They are comfortable. Not a ton of protection, but I don't usually get a ton of abuse to the elbows.

Ohh god I hated those days! I had the same problem. I didn’t play for months. I use these now: Bodyprox Elbow Protection Pads 1... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072B9K85Q?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share and have no issues. I don’t know if it helps with pain as I don’t have any now, but it surely helps prevent a second bursitis occurring.
I also got mine on amazon: Physix Gear Compression Socks for Men & Women (20 - 30 mmhg) Boost Stamina https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B073FLCFK2/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_TZ37WYTHWD0E384ZSTZA?psc=1
They were effective and helped a lot since I had to sit for long sessions on the nursing chair.
Would highly recommend using some KT tape.
I have messed up knees as well and KT tape has been wonderful for me, especially when paired with a soft sleeve.
Something like this:
After a lifetime of road cycling (now 61), and getting tired of people trying to kill me every day, I've moved to running. When my knees started hurting (they never hurt before) I took a chance and bought a couple of these...
I find them VERY helpful. When I run with them my knees are much less sore/painful. I have also been doing a lot of hip and knee exercises, which I'm sure are helping, and still... if I forget these sleeves I really feel it from a few miles in right through the next day. With them, I have very little pain during or after.
I think that if one can fit into your budget you have very little to lose.
When I first started doing fitness classes, my knees really started to hurt after a while. I couldn't run more than 10 minutes on the treadmill without them starting to feel all out of sorts. After reading reviews I ended up purchasing the uflex knee compression sleeve on Amazon, and it has changed everything. I've been wearing at least one (my right knee is the worst) to every workout class for going on 4 years and now I barely have any pain.
I have a meniscus tear on my left knee from a fall. Ortho didn't recommend surgery. I've been working to strength the muscles around the knee and like the run that you did, any serious work and I pay for it later. It actually feels like it's the cyst that formed this is giving me all the trouble.
Anyway, I picked up a compression brace on Amazon. First day, it felt miraculous. Weeks later, no longer miraculous but the fact that it's keeping the inflammation down has made a huge difference.
I know, it's not a permanent fix, but at this point, it's better than nothing.
So I just want to start out by saying different need compression socks for different reasons and you should probably talk to your doc about some of the options. I've tried a bunch including TED and found that the ones that work *best for me* were not traditional compression socks but graduated compression socks.

They were great at getting me back on my feet and were comfortable enough that I could wear them all day. The TED socks had a tendency to create a painful ring around my leg wherever they ended. The graduated compression socks below really helped with that by easing up on the compression as you get closer to the sock opening.

This may not be right for you. Maybe for medical reasons it's really important that you use specific socks. I can't say - but the socks below worked really well for me

I just got these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072B9KB4L?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details as well as the same brand for knee pads. They're nice and comfortable, seem like they would offer good protection, and are low profile. The elbow pads in particular just look like I'm wearing a long-sleeved shirt or something, which is important since there are so many people, e-boarders, skaters, non-skaters, etc. that are super judgmental douchebags if they see you wearing pads of any sort.
Here's the link for the one I use
this is the one I use. It has directions to measure which size you need on the page.
I bought a pair of these as some low-cost protection: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072B9K85Q?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
They cover halfway down my forearm and halfway up the bicep where it usually meets my riding shirt. That typically only leaves a gap between it and my riding gloves.
They're quite flexible but they don't breathe particularly well. Very sweaty in hot weather, but it's really not that bad. I rarely notice it until the end of the ride.
Something like these : Physix Gear Sport Compression Socks for Men & Women 20-30 mmHg - Athletic Fit (1 Pair) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J4MF53Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_6221QV4QJN8AY4S7HZTP?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 ??
I really like these: Knee Compression Sleeve for Men & Women - Knee Brace Support for Running, Jogging, Sports, Joint Pain Relief, Arthritis & Injury Recovery - Knee Braces for Knee Pain - Single Wrap Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019ZK0WS0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_6uv3FbHMNW5KX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
But I would add that nothing helps me more than icing after a workout.

Not brand specific, but I just went with a compression level I had in mind (20-30 mmHg) and great review in Amazon. This one is what I got, and have 3,500+ at 4.5/5 stars.
I had some similar issues when I started out and ended up buying some compression sleeves for my knees (and taking a couple of days off). So far they've helped a lot and my knees have gotten a lot stronger since then so I probably don't need them anymore.
That said, if it's not gone after a couple of days of rest, definitely check with a doctor.
Here you go. I still have to modify any hiit jump moves. Def can't do those burpee jump knee tucks that are so popular, I get knee pain just watching those.
This is why Insanity Max 30 was not effective for me, it's basically all jumping and the modifier they offer didn't really get the same burn.
I'm glad reading this thread that I'm not alone with knee issues.
I wear knee sleeves under my pads. They work great. Wear them for squatting, too. Look at my profile and see my recent squat video too see them in action. I’d say look at my skate posts, but they’re under the pads.
Here’s the one I use, from Amazon amazon link
Less than $20. Keep at it! 💪
I like to wear compression knee sleeves during the entire hike. It helps stabilize the knee joint and lets me go a little longer without feeling pain. I also recommend using poles, since they can take some of the weight off your knees.
I am quite new to running. Normally I just wear my compression shorts under my normal shorts and that is about it really. However, as this is going to be longer distance than I am used to and more intense it has me concerned as I have had knee troubled in the past (due to rugby).
For this run I have purchased https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B073FLCFK2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and

Just to try give a little more support. I am unsure if this will actually help or just aid me a little mentally. Although I must admit the keen support moving around once it gets too wet/after too much crawling does have me a little worried.
Based on a google search, which I know is the best way to figure out what's wrong with you, I think I get intermittent "runner's knee." My knee feels wobbly and stiff (which sounds contradictory) when I run, and then there's a dull pain for the rest of the day, increased wobbliness, and a weird "texture" (?) when I unbend it. The next day it's fine again.
I do squats to try and strengthen my knees/legs, but that's about it other than walking and running.
I'm thinking about buying this knee compression sleeve. Do you think this would help? Even when it doesn't hurt, my knee has always been a little baby. I'm fairly certain (had them fitted) that my shoes aren't the issue.
These are the socks I got and These are the knee braces I got.
I would recommend them both. I usually wear them after long runs or speed work and they're fantastic.
In addition to using to trekking poles (look up youtubes of how to use them properly), I hike with these knee braces - makes all the difference.

I bought these knee sleeves about one month ago for weight-lifting/running/basketball. Works fantastic for me, never slides down. Over 6,500 reviews at 4.8 stars.
YES! I started having knee pain late into BBG 1.0 (week 9 or so). It turns out I tore my MCL (inner knee) and my knees felt like they were on fire some days but achy others. I made sure to rest them when I could and wear knee sleeves on BBG Leg days. I bought some simple compression knee sleeves (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019ZK0WS0/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Most importantly, I made sure to be more aware of my side-to-side movements. I keep my knees straight when doing the jumping moves and make sure to stretch really well.
