The big Galveston hurricane. Erik Larson (the Devil in the White City guy) wrote a book about it called Isaac's Storm. Pretty interesting read.
Lot of the houses survived the wind, but the storm surge lifted big rafts of debris that plowed across the island. I was in Biloxi for Katrina, and even though the building was more than tough enough to survive the wind you could hear shit banging around out in the darkness. I can't imagine what that would have been like in wooden buildings.
for anyone who is interested in reading a horrific account of life in a hospital when the hurricane hit, i highly recommend this book. The life and death decisions that had to take place are absolutely third world. A fantastic and dark read for sure.

I think the term is Imperialistic Warmongering.

Scratch a liberal, a fascist bleeds. Neoliberal foreign policy is one of torture, of both the people and the economy. Would you like to know more?
Read Naomi Kleins book on the subject. It is a serious eye opener.

Fuck off. Its a prosperous government for corporate interests and the wealthy, not the people. Which is exactly how neoliberal economies are designed to function (thanks Milton Friedman). Don't even talk about "converting through violence" after what Pinochet (with American help I might add) did to socialists and any nominally leftist people; thousands tortured and disappeared after a coup against a DEMOCRATICALLY elected socialist government under Salvadore Allende. You do some fucking research you lying ghoul.
Hi guys,
/r/baseball mod here. Just wanted to remind you that SI writer/author of Astroball, Ben Reiter, is participating in an AMA on the sub at 2 pm Eastern. Come on over to submit your questions!
This title and thread was so confusing to me.
He announced the book on purpose. The book is a collection of Trump quotes compiled by the Late Show staff, leading to the book being billed as "by Donald J. Trump (by accident)":
He was a pioneer in establishing what we know now as the NWS so you aren’t far off. One of the best books I’ve ever read is called <em>Isaac’s Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History</em> by Erik Larson(Devil in the White City) that reads like a firsthand account recreated with what’s known from the actual history.
It’s a relatively quick read and it really dives into interesting things like how poor communication(among other socio-political issues) between the US and Cuba prevented the news of the 1900 storm getting out in enough time to do much about it. The book was gifted to me when I lived in Houston, and interestingly enough also explains how Houston became the dominant port city as a latent effect of the 1900 storm’s effect on Galveston and any future it may have had as the big-dog port city.
If you take your time and do your research, you can make incredibly functional and beautiful wrappings. That being said, manufacturers of the hot garbage we see here aren’t going to pay for the time and knowledge it takes. “The Ashley Book of Knots” was my first resource on knot tying and line work. It’s pretty dense but if you are interested in doing anything with rope, this book is amazing. I am sure there are great YouTube channels out there too.
Have not read it, but I hear lots of good things about Astroball
Pressed send too soon. Do yourself a favor and read about this storm in Isaacs Storm by Erik Larson. This storm and this man are why we now have a national weather service.

Have you read Isaac’s Storm by Peter Larson*? It’s about the 1900 Hurricane and is written by the same guy who wrote The Devil in the White City that’s being made into a movie. It’s a fantastic read and really gave me perspective on the region after moving to Houston years back. I highly recommend it if you haven’t already.

This is the one! At first I got it as a novelty, but the recipes were all really good. Love Chelsea Monroe-Cassel. Got many of her other cookbooks now too. But this one I think has the best recipes. I have cooked quite a few!
The ropework is great. See https://www.amazon.com/Ashley-Book-Knots-Clifford-W/dp/0385040253
Just for comparison, I'm always taken aback by the battery capacity hams think are good. My boat house battery bank is 675 Ah and I'm planning to up to 900 Ah next replacement cycle. Granted I run refrigeration, freezer, navigation electronics, and lighting as well as radios but still - I can go a pretty long time between charges. *grin*

The planet is fucked, but what region you live in the US will determine to what degree you are fucked. The SW, SE, and lower midwest are super fucked. Based on research it looks like the two best places to live in the US as the climate chaos kicks in will be the PNW and the Great Lakes region. Both with have warmer growing seasons and have access to fresh water, unlike the rest of the country.
Our biggest issue here will be dealing with wildfires and heatwaves like we just experienced. If you are interested, David Pogue wrote this book that has in depth analysis of how climate change will impact the US. I highly recommend it.
{King Leopald's Ghost}, about Belgium's atrocities in the Congo
The Children's Blizzard by David Laskin, a pioneering era horror story in which a schoolhouse gets trapped in a snap cold freeze and blizzard with no firewood, no warm clothes, a young teacher with no experience, and about 20 kids who can't go home.
These first-person slave accounts collected by the US Gov in the 30s. During the depression, the gov created jobs by sending people out into rural areas to record culture, like appalacian music, and they also captured these slave narratives.
"Shock Doctrine"- basically bankrupt a country so they will be in debt and then "sell" you (to privatize) their countries natural resources (like water) to sell them back to you. At least what i remember.

Really great non-fiction read on this and how one man screwed over a whole lotta people by denying what the Cuban meteorological office kept telling him was going to happen: Isaac's Storm.
There's actually an incredibly helpful book that talks to this and its always on my bookshelf. How to Prepare for Climate Change by David Pogue shows that the general principles are to either move "up" or north.
The theory is that Climate Change doesn't just make the temperatures hotter but changes your areas' typical climate and seasonal weather more volatile. So if you're in SoCal it is not only getting hotter but also drying, making the forest fire situation that much worse. Moreover, if you have an El Nino event, it might swing more violently the opposite way with an even wetter year, causing mudslides and flooding.
The trick is to move North to areas where the climate will not be affected that much by climate change. This includes areas like: 1) the Great Lakes area 2) the Rust Belt 3) the PNW (west of the cascades) and the extreme upper NE (Maine, NH, and Vermont). Or, if you want to stay in the same areas, move up to higher elevation. Places like the the Rockies will fare well. Notice how in the South the Smoky Mountains are doing better than the areas east or west of them.
See, it's funny because conservatives also do this, just more effectively. None of them cried about politicizing tragedy when it was creating the DHS after 9/11, for example.
This is historical revisionism lmao. None of what you are saying is even remotely true. Please for the love of god read a fucking book. Start with this one, I'll even buy it for you https://www.amazon.com/Shock-Doctrine-Rise-Disaster-Capitalism/dp/0312427999
For one take on the role that data plays, I'd recommend reading Astroball: https://www.amazon.com/Astroball-New-Way-Win-All/dp/0525576649
They talk about how they integrated human input and data effectively back when the Houston Astros went from near the bottom of the rankings to winning that season!
Good to hear, yea I really liked it as well.
If you ever get the chance, I would recommend Isaac's Storm which tells the story of the 1900 Galveston Hurricane which effectively wiped the city off the face of the map.
It’s got that same gripping account storytelling of the Circus fire.
It got so much attention, Stephen Colbert's staff even issued a book about it with the proceeds going to a hurricane victims charity. https://smile.amazon.com/Whose-Boat-This-Aftermath-Hurricane/dp/1982121084/ref=sr_1_1
I'm getting a sneaky suspicion that a lot of rich people in the West, the ones who secretly dictate major policies and legislations, and invest globally, they want a broken Ukraine so that they can rebuild it and make money off the rebuilding process. As described in The Shock Doctrine : Disaster Capitalism
We are discussing a book called "Shock Doctrine: Rise of Disaster Capitalism," which I have linked below. The author, who is a long-time, credible journalist provides all sorts of sources and direct quotes, including from Friedman himself.
https://www.amazon.com/Shock-Doctrine-Rise-Disaster-Capitalism/dp/0312427999
What?! That’s ridiculous!
Admittedly, I’m an adult without children <gasp>, but kid books shouldn’t be more than adult novels, should they?
I bought Stephen Colbert’s (Late Show) picture book a couple of years ago. All proceeds went to disaster relief, and it was full of snark, so I ponied up the $9. But this mess is twice that! Grifters on the take! Stephen Colbert’s Whose Boat is This Boat? Comments that Don’t Help in the Aftermath of a Hurricane
I think what you’re seeing is what the rich want us to see.
This is all how they intend to capitalize on disaster capitalism. Look up what Arizona republicans are doing to/giving access to the water there for an example.
