I have a daughter with bilateral cleft lip and palate and another cleft baby on the way. Feeding was tough with my daughter and we did find squeezable bottles as she had no suction with her cleft palate. These are now what’s most recommended and I would recommend purchasing in advance: https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Browns-Original-Specialty-Feeding/dp/B017UIRCHI/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=dr+browns+specialty+feeding+system&qid=1624066981&sprefix=dr+browns+specialty&sr=8-3
Definitely get a referral to a cleft team early on so you can get all of your questions answered and know the plan for your baby. I also recommend “cleft mom support” group on Facebook if either one you is on that platform. I felt more alone when my daughter was born but it’s been really helpful to be a part of that community now. It will all be ok. The surgeries can be rough but before you know it they are just a memory and your child will continue to grow and thrive and go through all of the normal ups and downs of childhood.
Your baby may not like these (because they definitely seem to have a sixth sense about these things), but they are a similar shape and size to the disposable bottle nipples and they're cheap so it might be worth a try.
Comotomo bottles in 2 packs are on sale on Amazon today - both the 5oz and 8oz. $15.85 for 5oz and $18.79 for 8oz. Both of these are historically low prices.
I actually bought a singleton 5oz last week (grrr, regretting it now) just to see what it was like in-person and am really pleased with it so far! Obviously no guarantee that baby will like them, but I know these are popular bottles that tend to be more expensive.
These ones are great! I think I had to replace them after using them daily for 6 month, but that felt reasonable to me
I use these. They are marked to 9 oz but they fit about 11.5 if filled to the top. My average pump output is 12.5 oz per session so I store about one pump's worth in each bottle.
I'm pretty sure it was like these.
https://www.amazon.com/Gerber-First-Essential-Plastic-Assorted/dp/B00140BE3W
I got it in the super market when I got mine. And I just used any reusable plastic straw.
I took a knife and made a small X at the upper shoulder of the bottle and pushed the straw through. If you do it right you don't have to glue the straw in place, but you might have to if the seal isn't perfect.
The gasmask connector from the hose I had fits it perfectly.
Those disks are so annoying and only for travel but they still leak. When I store bottles in the fridge or travel with them I use these screw on tops instead: https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Browns-Original-Replacement-Travel/dp/B0006BAJNG/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?crid=2HDJJ7UDHIZU0&keywords=dr+browns+travel+caps&qid=1669019703&sprefix=dr+browns+travel%2Caps%2C87&sr=8-2
When I need the bottle I just pop on the other components. I also think the screw on tops are better for bottle warmers. When I put a bottle in a bottle warmer with the vents and nipples formula will get into the vent and leak if I don’t open the bottle and drain milk from the vent.
I use these bottle and have a spectra that this works on as well. I also tried the picture method but thats just not for me. Im don't have an over supply can barely keep up with LO feeding. Im usually just 3-4 feedings ahead. So the bottles come super handy.
You can buy it on Amanzon here and it’s pretty cheap. You can pass the tube underneath your boob and tape it in place. That way the baby won’t see it
Get something like this and hold the baby in the same position as breastfeeding. You can also get “natural” or more nipple-like bottle nipples and different flow rates to more accurately match your wife. Also try getting your wife to sneak in a bottle while breastfeeding just for a few minutes at a time.
Sometimes it’s just about habit and comfort and the more gradually you can introduce a new sensation or situation the easier it will be for the baby to accept.
I’m a white man and my wife is a Chinese. My son within 1-2 weeks was behaving this way. Turns out he was unable to digest dairy properly which was causing internal bleeding/throat pain. My pediatrician was used to dealing with Asian children (and she’s an Indian) and recommended we switch to non dairy formula ASAP while mom, my wife, cuts dairy out of her diet. After 2-3 weeks of no dairy we had my wife’s milk tested and confirmed it was clean. My son no longer had blood in his stool samples and was no longer suffering. It was not easy. Lots of crying, stress, etc. Your baby will probably HATE the non dairy formula. We tried Enfamil, Nutramigen, and Similac. They all stink and taste like garbage. But he won’t suffer internally. Also my son had small passages in his nose which caused suffocation issues. As he got older that got better but we had to feed him almost completely upright. One other thing I can remember was the nipple size. We tried at least a dozen different bottles and ended up with one that prevented air bubbles: Dr. Brown's Dr. Brown's Original Bottle Specialty Feeding Starter Kit, 8 Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017UIRCHI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_4VWBXBK8682M12R0RQCD?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
We ended up half mothers milk half formula (wife couldn’t produce enough for full time) and my wife went dairy free for about 9 months when we started introducing a little bit again to her diet. This helped our baby tremendously. My son is 2 1/2 and super healthy now, loves pizza and cheese. but I remember those dark days. Hopefully I don’t get banned here for commenting as a man but I thought I’d throw my 2 cents in
Hi! I feel you. This is my baby. Someone suggested this cup to me and we’ve been practicing with it everyday for a month and my baby is just finally starting to drink from it by herself! We’ve spent the past month squeezing juice into her mouth (because it was recommended by her doctor) and modeling how to drink from it.
This is the only bottle my babe will eat from: Lansinoh Baby Bottles for Breastfeeding Babies https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H0DH2NS/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_J0Z3SC7FRCVJ8CH6B13P?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Good luck!!
Dr brown specialty. They have a blue disk that works as a one way valve, so all the baby has to do is bite the nipple, no suction needed. I will warn you they leak like crazy, if you have issues their customer support is amazing. So many parts, I hate these bottles so much, but I do recommend them to anyone with palate issues.

There isn't anything different about these bottles than regular thin dr brown bottles, the blue disk will fit in any thin dr brown system. No you can't buy them separately, but if you already have a bunch of bottles if you call customer service asking where to get the blue disks because you already have the bottles, chances are they will send you a bunch for free.
Cleft team also told us about Mead Johnson bottles and pigeon nipples, but honestly I think the pigeon nipples are more for cleft lip and mine hate them. But it might be worth checking out cleft palate groups on fb or something if you need more resources.
I've never heard of a high palate, will your baby need surgery or anything? I was told without surgery mine wouldn't be able to use straws and have a massive speach impediment and other issues, so I'm curious.
Comotomo bottles have worked really well for our little one since it mimics the soft breast shape, is great for latch, and the way the bottle vents are made also help decrease colic. We bought the additional nipple sizes too. The 1 hole - low flow which we used up to 3 months. Our 4 month old is using the 2 hole - medium flow now.

That sounds normal to me! Mine can't go more than 2-2.5 hours and she's almost 9 months 😂 You can always try those boob shaped bottles
No advice on increasing calories. But I know a few moms who have used a supplement device to keep baby at the breast and stimulate more production while supplementing with formula.
Pump and use Lansinoh bottles. Took us 3 weeks to learn how to breastfeed. Watch videos and try to get a deep latch. Links below.

Have someone who's not you give him a bottle of an ounce as a snack between breastfeeding sessions.
Look up paced breastfeeding. Take it slow, rub his mouth/chin with the sides of the nipple like you might with your own nipple, and give a little bit at a time with some breaks for him to swallow and breathe.
I got a bottle recommendation from a lactation consultant. We use these Lansinoh bottles and he does great with them.
Ha, someone else's comment mentioned it I think! It's this. It's a great way to teach a baby to use a straw because you can squeeze it to get a little liquid in their mouth so they understand the point.
Yeah that makes sense, plus nothing wrong with baby food! We fed yogurt and smashed sweet potato and stuff like that too, which are definitely purees.
Dr. Brown's bottles work with these caps that you use in place of the collar/nipple. (we bought ours separately). That is how you mix formula in Dr. Brown bottles. And then after you take off the cap and assemble the collar/nipple/vent.
I never tried to mix without the cap. And yes it was annoying.

I’m thinking either a latex nipple (if no latex allergies in family) since it’s softer, or a cone-shaped one like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H0DH2NS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_470PR8SX3WM9058ANZ1R?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
You can also try these suggestions (except the last two bc yikes): https://lacted.org/iable-breastfeeding-education-handouts/bottle-refusal/
Or baiting and switching her by keeping the bottle nipple right next to your nipple, get her sucking on your nipple first then quickly detach and offer the bottle nipple.
My baby would fall asleep like this in the early weeks because he wasn't really getting anything and was just nursing. He didn't really have the energy to stay awake.
You could try syringe feeding instead of a dropper. While you have baby on the breast, insert a plastic syringe in the side of his mouth and slowly squirt in the supplement.
Alternatively, you could try an supplemental nursing system where you stick a tube in baby's mouth and he learns to suck. Im still using an SNS at 7 weeks. I use the Big Boy Version because it works really well for me. I didn't start using one until like 4 weeks and was using the syringe method the early weeks. The SNS has been awesome in helping me up my supply and teach baby to suck. More and more often im able to satiate baby all on my own during a feed now!
Alternatively, I really like my spectra! If you decide on a spectra, these bottles off Amazon are compatible: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01G1AV4GG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_B36VZWKXPN0JANM0CA4D
I wouldn’t stress about the bottles, just find a pump and then normally they are either wide mouth or narrow mouth and you can use alternative bottles :)
Our LO went through a phase at about that same time when she started rejecting bottles!
We switched brands (these are what ended up working: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00H0DH2NS), and then followed these 3-steps / guidelines to get her to play with and accept the bottles: https://www.rachelobrienibclc.com/blog/bottles-for-breastfed-babies-introducing-a-bottle-part-1/
Now she takes the bottle again!! And we give her 4-5 ounces in a bottle as a 10 pm dream feed! It has helped her sleep habits a lot!
Good luck!
There are some boob shaped bottles that you might be able to fool her with. I got this one, though I never actually needed to use it since he took a bottle fine. It’s fairly cheap so might be worth a try! nanobebe Breastmilk Baby Bottle (Award Winning Innovation for Breastfed Babies), Breastfeeding Newborn Breast Like, Anti Colic, Easy Latch, Preserves Breast Milk nutrients, Teal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CL9TG2R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_dfr1FbPFB28QV
I’ve got the exact opposite problem you do. My son was in the NICU and I had a C section so his first feeding experiences were all bottle. He has no idea what to do with a nipple and basically just screams at my boob until I get a bottle out. Sometimes all our plans just go straight out the window 😩

Not sure if it will help your little one but just want to help and let you know what worked for us.
