I like these pulley systems, easy to lift and gets them out of the way. https://www.amazon.ca/RAD-Cycle-Products-Bike-Hoist/dp/B003TFOPJA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1546012773&sr=8-1&keywords=bike+pulley+storage
I own this (I didnt know it was an as seen on TV product). It's great since I live in a rental and cant put up bike racks. It also makes the space much more compact since it stores the bikes vertically. It cant handle heavy bikes, and it isnt sturdy so dont place it where itll be in the way. Here is the link for the one I bought since TV products are cheap. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXSHGWR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sjjJBbF5M6ZN3

For my small apartment, I bought this off Amazon. It leans up against the wall and can be used as a bike stand for maintenance.
Edit: For $50 it's been great: amazon link
I got a bike stolen from a bike room about 10 years ago and have never trusted them since. I always keep min in my unit. I use something like this Bike Rack that leans up against the wall. It doesn't take up a lot of space and gives me a lot of peace of mind.
I feel your pain. If I were in your shoes I’d sure as hell want to bring my bike into my apartment too.
I’ve got two bikes I switch between regularly, and recently got this from Amazon. It’s right against the wall just inside my apartment, so I can hang them up and take them down easily just as I’m coming and going.
Don’t worry about hanging your bike by the rim of a wheel. Unless your frame is made out of ultra dense material from a collapsed star and weighs a ton you’ll be fine. I wouldn’t discount a pulley system with the ceiling, even if it’s tall either. Installation would certainly be a pain, but worth it once you got it done. I’ve seen some innovative setups on YouTube, you can look there for some inspiration and brainstorming. It’s also possible you could make something just to fit your needs in a DIY project. Before I bought my rack I was contemplating following some instructions online to make one myself out of $50 or so of PVC pipe or wood from a hardware store. Good luck with whatever you choose.
Sure! I don't remember what they're called but I found the shelves at the Container Store. For the bike rack I'm using this, which catches the front wheel. The rear tire has scuffed up the wall a bit, but Amazon sells trays you can mount to catch the wheel and avoid that. I was just too lazy to buy one.
With living in a tiny apartment with no ability to hang from the ceiling or walls I finally got tired of tripping over and constantly moving my bike. I found this and its worked really well to cut the storage space in half. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXSHGWR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I think I'll end up getting this for my apartment, but thought I'd post this link here for anyone else interested. It's $45 on amazon.
Do not buy a Canadian Tire bike for anything unless you plan on using it once a year for 5 minutes as you ride up and down your driveway.
Here are a few reasons:
Almost any repair will cost more than buying a new Canadian Tire bike. Just look up the cost of replacing a rim.
It's hard to impossible to repair in many cases. Forget trying to fix it on the side of the road if you're out on a ride. If it breaks down, you're walking or carrying it home.
The bikes are so low quality they are quite literally dangerous to ride. Most of them haven't been assembled properly. It's not uncommon to find a bike in a Canadian tire or Walmart with the fork on backwards.
So on to the suggestions. You can go to most local bike shops and ask for entry level bikes. If you look you should be able to find one in the $400-$600 range. If they are from main brands, they will automatically be of higher quality and far more repairable / compatible with parts. Look for bikes that are last year / year before models.
Alternatively, check Kijiji. Kijiji is filled with much higher quality used bikes.
On to storage (On your balcony). If that's your only option? I'd make sure it's totally covered. It should not get wet when it rains, it shouldn't be covered with snow when it snows. Cover it with a tarp or create a cover of some kind to keep nature off it.
I'd recommend one of these if you want to keep it upright. Again, you probably don't want to let it get wet / covered with snow.
Good luck!
7 is an excellent option for an apartment, but I would disagree with that article's statement of relying entirely on gravity. It includes one anchor and screw to keep it from tilting while loading/unloading.
I bought a bike tree off of Amazon and bolted it to a couple harbor freight dollies so it can roll around. I also put some boards on the dollies to make a platform to store bike gear.

I have a few of these Delta Gravity Bike Racks and I'm really happy with them. It does take up some wall space obviously.

I'm sure you can. If you don't have a convenient Harbor Freight, you can pay much more for this identical system on Amazon:

Although honestly, if we did it again, we'd probably just pick our parts from scratch. We replaced quite a few of the stock items: the rope was constantly cited as the weakest link, so we bought quarter inch rope from Lowes instead; we felt the hooks were flimsy, so we removed them and threaded a knock off Park Tools hook straight onto the pulley instead, and we also bought 2x6s to mount them on and used decking screws we already had instead of the included hardware. But the pulley with the system is self-locking , which I really like. Not sure if you can buy them like that from the hardware store?
Anyway, the hardest bit imo was watching him balance precariously on a ladder whole installing it. Made me nauseous, but I'm terribly afraid of heights.
I have used a couple different versions depending on where I’m keeping the bike. My favorite, is the puppy system that you can mount on the ceiling. Thanks! I used a simple rack called “Racor - B1R” (Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009I8ANM/). It’s not a true swivel mount, but with a lower tire cup (separate ~$4 buy) I can adjust the bikes ~40degrees to not stick out into garage so far.
There are also some true swivel mounts (I see a lot of praise for SteadyRack Classic), but I already had 3x of these on hand from an earlier purchase.
Nope, amazon @ $17 and it's not bad.
if you dont wanna worry about leaving your bike locked up outside at night, i have one of these stands in my teeny studio apartment that does the job really well for both my bike and my fiance's bike.
good luck my guy!
Here is the amazon link to it: Feedback Sports RAKK Bicycle Storage Stand (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001F9V842/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_KFe4EbMENRFCH
I’ve only used it for 24hrs and I love it so far. Reviews look decent, too.
I have a road bike I've put less than 10 miles on. It's a small Fuji Newest 4.0 2011, perfect for anyone between 5'0" and 5'4". I'll throw in this bike gravity stand, a helmet (with rear blinking lights), a U-lock and a front bike light, all for $300 OBO.
It's basically everything you need to get started other than a decent sense of balance (which I lack).
I have this back rack. Holds two bikes, and is sturdy and easy to mount bikes on. $30 big ones for it
You could get a stand like this, or a wall mounted solution if you have the space.

Idea #3 might be a bit much without some help each time. #2 isn't bad, but not "off the garage floor" and still could be a bit much with a heavy bike. Idea #1 might be a bit fiddly but would do the trick.
Personally, in not a fan of having the weight of the bike hanging off fork like that. Is probably fine though.
I have a Bike Nook and this hook style thing where the weight is on the floor: https://www.amazon.com/Dirza-Garage-Hanger-Storage-Vertical/dp/B01FC8AJGO/ref=asc_df_B01FC8AJGO/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198099400060&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17315599642303598350&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&...
I would get 2 hook styles if I had the wall space
Planning to get one of these, replace those hangers with large hooks to hold the wheels and use it to hang a bike upside down between the joists in my garage. https://www.amazon.com/2005-Cycle-Products-Bike-Hoist/dp/B000PEURIQ
Good or bad idea?
I have this Delta rack and it does the job. It's cheap too and doesn't require any drilling or bolting anything to the wall.
It's not without faults. The rubber over the metal supports where it holds the bike frame are constantly sliding off or cracking. But to be fair I take my bikes off/on this rack quite a bit.
I know of people who use the delta stand without drilling holes in the wall. Obviously you have to be a bit careful when hanging the bike and not bump it hard when walking by. https://www.amazon.com/Bike-Bicycle-Floor-Stand-Storage-Rack/dp/B000ACAM38
I keep my bike in my bedroom behind my door using https://www.amazon.com/Bike-Nook-Instantly-Handstand-Position/dp/B06XXSHGWR/ref=sr_1_1?c=ts&keywords=Indoor+Bike+Storage&qid=1661821793&s=outdoor-recreation&sr=1-1&ts_id=3403371 i have it set up to where the wheels of the bike are facing the hinge of the door and the door swings towards the bike. I have a hinge door stopper so the door doesn't hit the bike.
