I didn’t necessarily like the look of them either but same as you, I saw it fit that it would protect my hood much more. I bought this one as I did not want to spend more on a tape variant and I didn’t want it potentially flying off either.
It’s been a great addition and it was super simple to install, look me about ten minutes. It’s done it’s job great, I have many less bugs and hear many less rocks hitting my windshield / hood now.
They make a slim "bug/rock shield" that attaches to the front of the hood. This will reduce the amount of rocks hitting your windshield. After the 4th windshield on my 2015 I put one on and have had only one chip since then. it has been almost 4 years since I added it.
It's Matte black. Here's the Amazon link. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017UQH0W2/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_J1tZEb5SCQZ2M There's also some good videos on YouTube of people giving it reviews. So far I've had it on for 2 days. Going to drive the truck tonight to work to see how it handles. then in another two days I'll give it its first wash since putting it on and seeing how it handles that. Right now it looks like it's pretty much a part of the truck now.
Thank you! The bug deflector works great, it's a must buy if you do a lot of highway driving! The AVS model is available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Auto-Ventshade-25053-Bugflector-2010-2018/dp/B003ZJ2HMM/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=1USD248OD1V50&keywords=4runner+hood+shield&qid=1655667060&sprefix=4runner+hood+sh%2Caps%2C131&sr=8-3
Exact same thing happened to me on my last car. It came from another muddy/dusty pickup truck when they passed me, and some rock came loose on their chassis.
So after buying my 4runner, I also bought one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003ZJ2HMM which is great/cheap insurance because it will deflect most debris so that they won't hit the windshield. Good investment IMO.
Lifting the car a few inches might also help a little, if you happen to be planning to do that anyway.

It’s an avs hope deflector I ordered off amazon. The picture didn’t match the actual product but I went with it anyway.

Got mine 2 weeks ago, love the look. I wasn't to sure about putting it on with 3m tape I was going to get the one that screw on, but liked the low profile look. I'm hoping the paint under it holds up.
Using active exhaust/intake will block the light... whether inside tent or outside tent, fan hooked up to duct will prevent light coming in.... It's not going to travel inside the fan then through the bends of the ducting.
You'll probably have more light leaks through the zippers alone.
If you're still concerned, just get these to put on the end of the ducting leading outside tent. Prevent bugs/light/mold etc.
Thanks! Found that at my local hydro store. It's pretty similar to this one: http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-ACBS6-Bug-Shield-6-Inch/dp/B0057JE5VE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446250245&sr=8-1&keywords=duct+screen
