I want to add a couple of these to my bike for longer trips soon;
mounted with this;
MSR 30oz Fuel bottle, $17 on amazon https://www.amazon.com/MSR-11832-Fuel-Bottle-30oz/dp/B0015I0GE6
Zip tie it to your bike if you're not the kind to ride with saddlebags/backpack to put it in
I've used it multiple times for myself and others, a quarter gallon is enough to get you to the nearest station unless you REALLY fucked up, even if you only get 30 mpg it's still >7 miles of fuel, double that for a 250 or so.
Maybe a different design? I have the largest 30oz bottle off amazon and the nozzle fits fine in the opening. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015I0GE6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The range is around 120 miles. I reset the trip odometer when I fill it and then re-fill after it hits 100 miles just to have some room for error. When I ride way out there, I bring some spare fuel in a fuel container which increases the range another 30 miles. btw, I'm 185 lb.
It’s safer to buy small tanks that are designed to be refilled.
Flame King Refillable 1 lb Empty Propane Cylinder Tank - Reusable - Safe and Legal Refill Option - DOT Compliant - 16.4 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MM3GCVO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_06MCXTDMPXNQY5J8XN48
Gatorade/Powerade bottles will last many many months(like year plus) with fuel in them.
Being disposable. You can usually find one or more in a trash can(in a pinch) at a gas station or use the bottle what you drink when you need it.
On a trip, being available & disposable means you only have to carry the spare fuel for the leg/s of the trip you suspect you might need it. Fill it, stash it, use it(when needed or to make room), throw it out. No fuel bottle taking up space 100% of the time.
Fuel bottles are easily found under $20 on Amazon.
I have a couple of these that I have been given & I've given some of them away. They've been used, just don't really ever leave the garage.
You can technically refill them, but they weren't designed for this and for example don't have a bleeder valve to let you know when they are full.
It's also technically illegal to transport them once refilled.
I keep mine in my saddlebag and refill it every three months or so when I’m at the gas station and remember.
I got this one:
MSR Liquid Fuel Bottle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0015I0GE6/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_BDK6Z1TY9M7SWEPAVYKW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
(Pasting on phone, sorry if it has too much crap on the link)
Worked well but not great for this purpose. A little hard to fill without spilling, a little hard to pour without spilling, and if you get gas on the container, the painted letters can smudge. But it did hold the gas perfectly even riding in hundred degree days which was my biggest concern.
Disposable 1lb cans are NOT supposed to be refilled. Doing so is incredibly dangerous. There are special ones that can be.
Yup, cardboard will totally work.
If you open the tank, and it's not splashing around (when upright) in the 'overspill area', you can get an empty (and dry) water bottle filled with fuel and top it off.
Better still, just get one of these and do the same thing: https://www.amazon.ca/Primus-Fuel-Bottle-Childproof-Cap/dp/B01E7CZ1R8/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3LSISB8KPSHIX&dchild=1&keywords=motorcycle+fuel+bottle&qid=1612974936&sprefix=motorcycle+fuel%2Caps%2C180&sr=8-4
Always good to have these floating around for any long trips anyway.
it's an MSR fuel bottle
I carry one myself and they seal fantastic, not even a whiff of gas odor from them. Ironically though, the paint on the bottle is not gas safe, so any overspill will make the paint sticky until it dries.
There is a company that sell refillable ones. You need to buy the canister and the valve to fill it from a 20 lb (grill) tank.

Never had a problem with that, but I didn't carry it arouind in the large tin tank it came in. Using a tank similar to this made it spillproof. The tanks are lighter but stronger than the tin can (they're made from 1 peice of aluminum) and I can distribute the load easily.
After my second time running out of gas, I started caring one of these, full, in my paniers.

Just enough fuel to get me home after I forget I need gas and turn onto the highway (no legal turn around and closest filling station is ten miles from work.)
Realistically I just carry a fuel bottle for the stove with some gasoline in it. That way I can run the stove, but if I need it there's also a little spare fuel for the bike.
If I need to move it back and forth, a few feet of this: https://www.lowes.com/pd/EASTMAN-3-8-in-x-20-ft-PVC-Clear-Vinyl-Tubing/1000180543 Will make a siphon just fine.
ETA: These are the fuel bottles that the stove uses: https://www.amazon.com/MSR-MSRFUELBOTT-Fuel-Bottle/dp/B002L1413S
My buddy just has 2 1 gal stainless steel tanks that he throws in a backpack.
My dad has a left side number rear number plate that he bolts onto his KTM.

after reading through these and wanting one myself with a few long road-trips planned- i ordered this one -
Thanks to everyone who replied and gave their two cents. In the comments of the amazon page for this bottle, one helpful guy listed the dimensions of each size of bottle. So I measured a bottle that just fit my LHT's underbelly cage. For anyone else pondering the same question as I was, it looks like the 30 oz bottle is a little too big if you are running 2" tires and fenders on a 54 cm frame but the 20 oz bottle should fit nicely.
