Can't go wrong with a cheap Coleman tent. I wouldn't trust tents on Amazon with like 13 reviews. Most of those are likely fake.
I would recommend more than a 1-man tent if you plan to live in it for an extended time.
What is your budget?
You can get a cheap tent from Amazon for $50. like this:
Or something from REI for $300+, like this:
Not on Amazon, but I bought this Target store brand 2-person tent on clearance a few years ago and it's still holding up pretty well, considering the price.
There is a Coleman 4-person tent going for $65.43 for Prime Day, also.
Yes, that Kelty tent is okay. Although I would not consider it 'inexpensive' at $220.
A classic tent for car camping is the Coleman dome. Only $50 on Amazon.
They have umbrellas you can clip on the seat btw. It might not look 'cool' but it will keep you cooler for sure. It can easily come on/off.
In US they have one that has thousands of reviews, same exact thing if thats where you're at. Just make sure to get large if you do.. Nice thing is it cools your upper body down by keeping it out of the sun but it also allows for a place to clip a cheap USB style fan and if the fan takes a dunk, it'll get ruined but they are very cheap and most people dont flip their sit-on-tops routinely.
A lot of good recommendations here but you’re not gonna get a better bang for buck than Coleman sundome. I’ve had one of these for a few years and it holds up great. Super quick and easy to set up and held up great I’m storms. If you are looking for something ultralight or for backpacking definitely go with a different brand but based on your uses this thing is perfect. I have a 6 person and I can fit a queen air mattress and a twin air mattress with our bags no problem. Should easily be able to fit your crew. Let me know if you have any specific questions about it!
It may not be what you're looking for, but I have an 8-10 person dome-top tent with a tarp-bottom in good shape. It's very much a summer-tent (great when it's hot, but zero warmth provided), but it's about 6'1" tall in the middle so most people can stand up, and is about 10' x 10' square. That said, as you're offering $50 to rent it, and I think I got it for $80 (was on clearance) at Big 5 a few years ago, I imagine you're looking for something nicer / warmer / bigger.
If you're really just needing a simple camping tent though, let me know. I would have to make sure it has all the pieces, but I would be happy to help you out if that works for your needs. Again, it does not provide any warmth, but it's waterproof and can be set up incredibly easy (can be assembled by 1 person, but only if absolutely necessary. 2 people suggested).
Found a reasonably similar product on Amazon for reference, although given the price, I would suggest that if one of you has the room to store it in the off-season, it might be better just to buy one new. That's assuming you have Amazon Prime though, and can get it in time. Otherwise check Target, they may have them on clearance for end of the season.
EDIT: Just realized you're looking for mid-september, not this weekend. If the above fits your needs, I would suggest getting an inexpensive one brand-new, as it'll give you the piece of mind to not worry about it missing pieces or leaking. Plus having one already will potentially inspire you and your friends to go camp more often next summer.
We have this one. They have a larger one as well, but I find this one to be super easy to set up and put away on my own.
Coleman Sundome 4-Person Tent, Green https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004J2GUOU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_hXgIeYYgKLq3q
I have this tent. Had it out in all day rain at the farmers market with nothing underneath. Kids stayed warm and dry. I also have the 10 person version. They are decent for their price point. I can set the 4 man up alone if I have to.
EZ-UP are certainly the most popular but I have one of these I got after reading reviews on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0033990N8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and get some of these to help keep it down: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000YPQPSW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Looks like a Coleman 4-person Sundome tent. You could measure inside dimensions to confirm.
$60 on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-2000007827-Sundome-4-Person-Tent/dp/B004J2GUOU/
Although I realize that replacing the full tent feels wasteful. Maybe that Coleman.com link above has a replacement part.
or just use a cheap blue tarp and tie it on yourself (getting in/out of the door will be harder).
Sport-Brella Versa-Brella SPF 50+ Adjustable Umbrella with Universal Clamp https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HA2ZKFQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZxseFbGFJ0FB9
It has a clamp to attach- I put a pvc pipe in my fishing rod hole and clamp it to that.
Get a Coleman sun dome for like 50 bucks and then load up the back of your car with whatever extra gear you’d like to take, store it in the tent when you get to the site.
Roof racks are great when you’re out of room inside the car, but are expensive and hard to get stuff in and out of.
Which mountains ? Depending on bear activity you may not want to just leave your cooler sitting outside, should have a bear proof cooler or tie it up in a tree if you can’t lock it in your car.
Edit: here’s the tent on amazon for 42 shipped ....it’s a tank of a tent for the price.
My wife and I got this cheap 4 person tent last year and have enjoyed the heck out of it. I’d definitely suggest a 4 person tent for 2 people if you’re car camping. Especially if you’re thinking of having a dog in there with you.
No regrets whatsoever and we’re only now looking for another tent that’s appropriate for backpacking. We’re still planning to car camp as well and wouldn’t want the backpacking tent in that situation so it wasn’t even a waste of money (unlike our sleeping bags and pads)
If you're not in the US prices on Amazon can be really wonky. Here's a link: https://www.amazon.ca/Coleman-Sundome-2-Person-Dome-Tent/dp/B014LSDUA8/ref=sr_1_6?crid=96F68OOYBKNA&keywords=coleman%2Bsundome&qid=1668869075&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIzLjY5IiwicXNhIjoiMy40MyIsInFzcCI6IjIuNjQifQ%3D%3D&s=sports&sprefix=coleman%2Bsundome%2Csporting%2C80&sr=1-6&th=1
Maybe try to find it at a local retailer instead if possible.
Not offended but there are lots of options and I don't know what your limitations are. The umbrella option didn't work or too heavy? If thats too heavy then going with a couple of clip on golf umbrella like this Might be the way to go.
There’s personal umbrellas that clip to your camping chairs if you need extra shade. Although there is lots of shade around camp, just not much by the pods
I use this. It's worked pretty well for me and held up to some wind. It's longer on one side than the other which has actually been beneficial so I can orient it to protect my canvas and palette but not block my view.
I really like my awning, it goes over the whole camper so I can store clothes on the camper roof and operate the fan even if it's raining

I love my fan, super quiet on low settings powerful enough to suck the bugs onto the screen for easy killing on high
Maxxair (00-04000K) 12V Roof Top Fan/Vent https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050EEO94/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_E0JQGBHV4EM6NR9RFK6H?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I did some other mods I like. I removed the sink it was too small to be useful but consumed counter space. I made a pull out piece for extra counter space, i installed an extra door (having just one sucks so bad)
I'm in the wet (boonie)hat camp. I think this year I might try sticking a Sport-brella on my kayak. We also freeze water bottles so we always have some icy water on hand. Drop one of those in your lap to thaw and it'll cool you off.
That's quite a range. Personally, I wouldn't take a 4 year old to the beach for more than 2 or 3 hours, tops. If you absolutely have to, then I'd suggest one of those little tents (like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RQQRTSM/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_NW9YH804YSQG5W758QM8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) that you can set up for them to rest in the shade in.
It’s a Coleman SunDome 4 person. This cheap little tent kept us dry and cozy in snow and rainstorms. Highly recommend!
That type would not work because it couldn't attach to the edge of the hatch, it has to attach 4 feet back on the roof making the awing cover the hatch itself not the aera behind the hatch where you would stand
We have an not to expensive beach/suv/minivan tent style awning that doesn't mount, but has to be deployed that does a similar thing but at least it's like 11 feet long so it still covers a big area behind and even around the hatch.
A comfy lawn chair and an attachable umbrella like this https://www.amazon.com/Sport-Brella-Versa-Brella-Swiveling-Umbrella-Midnight/dp/B00HA2ZKCO/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=chair+umbrella&qid=1629152093&sprefix=chair+umbrella&sr=8-1.
Any oublic space. Shit go work on the sidewalk on 24th and mission where everyone is hustling. Or chill at the beach in pacifica. Or go to dolores or alamo or a quieter park. It does open up a lot. You can also mix this with cafes/ bars/ etc and plan your day out.
Here is a random day working remote:
Morning progressive grounds on cortland and get an espresso drink and work inside or outside. They down with people working there. Walk down to precita park. Work from there for an hour.
Walk to haus. Work inside or outside there for a while.
Go get lunch. Maybe walk to valencia and grab a sandwich and head to dolores. Now u can work from dolores.
Afternoon getting there. Now finish up work at 500 club or walk over to lower haight and hit molotovs and alamo.
You can route your day or part of your day and still get all your work done.
Ive been working partially remote for a few years and sf is a great city for it. Also the free rooftops and aalesforce park into reds java into a ballgame.
Like u can create your own adventure.
Bart to oak and do the same type of thing
Caltrain to burlingame and use the public library patio. It is dope and usually empty.
Like u can work anywhere. Probably easier if vaccinated and no comorbidities if covid a concern.
Shit DM me and ill do a remote work day with you for part of the day.
I don't have any advice specifically about this but in light of the other comment maybe something like this would be helpful? https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00HA2ZKCO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_CMZJFE1B3Z5PEQ3GVKZ1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I have one and I use it for something else but a lot of the reviews mention it's great for shading a wheelchair.
I'm cheap as hell and what works great for me is a Coleman Sundome with replacement aluminum poles.
For about $150 you end up with a well made tent that has aluminum poles instead of fragile fiberglass poles.
The Coleman Sundome is a really good car camping tent. It may not be the easiest to set up, however.
Something like this?
Versatility Teardrop Awning for SUV RVing, Car Camping, Trailer and Overlanding Light Weight Truck Canopy Durable Tear Resistant Tarp with 2 Sandbag https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00ZKYSCOM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_6KKR91C2BEKAAY6SVCJ5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
You can also get it on Aliexpress
Bags and cupholder have already been mentioned. It is super annoying to not be able to carry things and move at the same time.
The sportbrella attaches to almost everything.

The reacher grabber with the suction cup ends because the others suck. It can reach cans down from high shelves in the grocery store or pick up an egg without breaking it.

Nice cart. FYI a BOB stroller is perfect and has off road wheels. You can find them used cheap.
Love these for that very purpose:
