[Reposting a shorter version of the video] The driver of the white car had his friend come to the scene of the accident and give a false report to the police officer, making himself a “witness to the accident“. The cop interviewed both of them first and then came to me, I told him that I had dash cam video but he wanted me to explain what happened first. I did and the officer looked very confused and asked to see the video. Apparently, the driver who hit me and his made up a wild story about me driving erratically and weaving in and out of lanes, ultimately ramming into his car. The officer was very close to criminally charging the “witness“ for providing false testimony to a police officer. Needless to say, the driver of the white car was cited for the accident and I was not. The officer did say that the DashCam video saved me from being at fault as he would have had to rely on the driver and “witness“ account of the accident which was wildly different from what actually happened.

If you ever get in a future accident (hope you don’t) have you figured out how you’re going to show the video? Like would you show cops the video on-scene immediately, potentially giving them hours of other video of your driving, or wait and only use it if you have to?
Edit: The “Amazon’s choice” dash cam I just looked at has an internal mic, too. So if you’re on the freeway singing or spittin’ fire along with your favorite artist (“Move, bitch, get out the way!”) when you get in an accident, they’ll hear that too. It shouldn’t matter, but keep it in mind.
> some dash cams can record even with the car off
I've got one for like $100 off Amazon that has this security feature. Quite handy for everyone imho.
Edit: link
Well it says Rexing dash cam on the bottom. They aren't cheap but seem like legit products https://www.amazon.ca/Rexing-Dashboard-Recorder-G-Sensor-Recording/dp/B00X528FNE
Most of their cameras use Sony sensors which are some of the best (if not the best) on the market.
Dash cam says April but this happened today August 31st 2018 on I-55 Chicago
Edit: It's hard to notice on the camera but the person that hit him truly had no time to stop. If you look closely and start counting after he passes the lines for the left lane, there was less than a second to react.
Both of them were perfectly fine with no cuts or physical damage (but they'll find out tomorrow what's fucked)

Roav Dashcam A1
Roav DashCam A1, by Anker, Dash Cam, Dashboard Camera Recorder, 1080P FHD, Nighthawk Vision, Wide-Angle View, WiFi, G-Sensor, WDR, Loop Recording, and Night Mode https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076GYGVY5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_1uoBCbT13V6AG
I have a Rexing Dash Cam and I like it a lot. You just run a cable from the cam to an aux port in your car and it does everything else for you. It records on a loop, so if nothing is saved from previous driving time, it goes back and deletes that data so you don't have to worry about your SD card getting filled up. Just turn your car on and you're set.
Fwiw this is the one I have. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X528FNE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_rhC-CbN4WBC3M I don’t have any complaints but I’m looking for a new one that can WiFi sync to my phone so I don’t need an adapter to plug the micro sd card into my phone.

This deserves its own post: god bless the designer maker and seller of Spy Tec Mobius Action Camera. And the lens extension cable. This thing is literally keeping me out of jail and prison today (see long comment)
The cop commented on the great quality of the video compared to the shit he sees usually.
But seriously guys, dash cams are cheaper than dirt and irrefutable. I don’t use the mobius in my car, I use the “Rexing V1P 2.4" LCD FHD 1080p 170 Degree Wide Angle Dual Channel Dashboard Camera Recorder Car Dash Cam with Rear Camera, G-Sensor, WDR, Loop Recording”, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t protect yourself.
I don't know about all dash cams but the one I bought, I hardwired it to my car radios circuit. I've been able to measure it as 250mAh power usage if that helps! I've had it running 24/7 for 2 months and It's hasn't made any noticeable or measurable affect on my batteries voltage. Have a great day!
It's a Vantrue N2 Pro! Definitely recommend, I've had it for about two years now and it's worked great for me!
Here is mine: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00X528FNE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I say 100 bucks will get you well made tech.
Not OP but I got this from Amazon (non-affiliate). Back camera resolution isn't fantastic but the front one looks really nice. My only complaint is storage, it only takes microsd cards up to 32gb and both cameras will burn through that in 2.5 hours if feed isn't being looped.
This Cam comes highly recommended in the Ride Share community.
Vantrue N2 dual facing cam with excellent night vision. I’ve been using it for Uber for over a year with no problems.
Vantrue N2 Pro Uber Dual Dash Cam Infrared Night Vision Dual 1920x1080P Front and Inside Dash Camera (2.5K 2560x1440P Single Front) 1.5" 310° Car Camera, Parking Mode, Support 256GB max, Sony Sensor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0742J69SQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_zP5fDbFZ5MVS0

I bought this one. It has a wide angle lens, G-sensor (saves recording in a crash) and it’s easily mounted on the windshield, also, the shape of the dash cam makes it possible to be discrete.
Edit: It’s expensive but there are other models that are cheaper but may lack some fancy features. The key is to have a dash cam, be it a $300 gizmo or a $20 Walmart special, anything will help in an incident.
And if you want more security, I have the Roav (Anker) camera for my vehicle and really like it. It will even turn on if you vehicle is off if something hits it. And, for a good quality camera, it's relatively inexpensive. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076GYGVY5/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Because they’re not at all meant for it. And this is almost down to 40 bucks and does the job way better.

This is the one that I got and I'm very happy with it. And turns out I was wrong it's not 1080 it's 4k. Center button on the back locks a file so whenever I see something dumb/funny/scary/amazing I just hit that button then every couple of weeks I pop the memory card out, take it into the house and save the files from it, some day I'll edit it all and make a super cut off my travels.

I got this one a while back for $126 plus a 32 gig SD card and it's definitely good enough quality to read license plates.
My current dash cam is a Rove R2. I'm very happy with it. It has great image quality, accepts a 128 GB card, and has GPS built in. It's very reasonably priced, too. I wanted one that's suction cup mounted so I can move it between my vehicles easily.
I think the video that I linked was taken with an older Z Edge camera.
I'd encourage you to look up videos of the Rove R2. I'm happy with mine.
And whatever camera you get you need to get a "high endurance" micro SD card. Get something that's meant for dash cams, "action cams", etc. Regular SD cards aren't able to be constantly written and rewritten to for long periods of time. Regular SD cards will fail after a few months and you'll be left with no recordings. I use Sandisk High Endurance cards. Samsung, Kingston, and Transcend also make equivalent cards.
You really need to invest in a dashcam, whether you drive for a living or not. This is the one I use, its $200, picture quality is very good, has forward and rear facing cameras, decent enough audio quality, takes up to a 256gb SD card, has an auto night vision mode, and just plugs right into your cigarette lighter. It is 100% worth every penny. Stay safe and good luck dealing with your thing, that sucks.

If you find the Sharper Image dashcam not up to your standards, you can use the same one I have: Spytec A118-C 1080p
here is the one I have and I love it.
99 on Amazon. It even comes with the tool you need to hide the wire. Whatever you do get, make sure it does well in high and low heat.
Lawyer here. I've been handling car accident cases for 12+ years. I'm coming up on 2,000 separate cases handled, and while I've seen a lot of different ways you can crash a vehicle I haven't seen them all.
PLEASE BUY A DASH CAM, THEY ARE INVALUABLE IF YOU ARE IN AN ACCIDENT, EVEN A MINOR ONE.
Insurance companies make money collecting premiums and lose money paying claims. They do not like to lose money/pay claims. They frequently make liability decisions based on their insured's version or their own, uh, "investigation." Even if you're not hurt you can waste hours of your time on the vehicle damage claim and your premiums may increase if you have to file with your own carrier.
A perfectly good dash cam is $50, many are cheaper and work fine.
I overspent and bought a $100 Rexing V1 on Amazon. It is great. https://www.amazon.com/Rexing-Dashboard-Recorder-G-Sensor-Recording/dp/B00X528FNE
Be safe out there.
It's the Anker Roav A1 Dashcam that I had replace my old Mobius action camera due to a sun-damaged lens.
