> I use this to chase cats away from my yard, or rather, the owners of said cats know not to let their cats loose in our neighborhood unattended. It turns out that there are ordinances in my city against indecent exposure, so I do need to wear a banana hammock while using this product outside of my home. I also think that the initial impression of a 280# man bearing down on an animal at top speed, mewling and slobbering, with a slab of silicone dangling from his mouth may initially be off-putting for some cats. But, once I have wrestled them to the ground and the clawing and biting has subsided, I can begin licking the cat until its horrified owner returns home from work to ask what I am doing. Obviously, the cat was on my property, and I can lick anything that I want on my property. Plus, I am using protection, as this silicone barrier prevents the spread of disease. I'm often told, "Well, that's MY cat!" To which I say, "Then get your own Licki brush, because this is obviously the reason that YOUR cat keeps wandering onto MY lawn." I rarely see the cat again. In fact, my neighbors make a conscious effort to avoid eye contact, which is an added bonus.
They can have catnip in them, so it might not just be enjoying the scratching.
Catit Senses 2.0 blah blah it comes with a pocket for catnip. My cat has never even looked at it lol, but it's super cheap
That is my Bertram! Catit Senses 2.0 Self Groomer
I would recommend getting additional wall stickies, it did not stay on the wall with the ones provided.
Get a brush like this
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002ARR2W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_FpNTDbKBCZN4J
It’s basically a blade that will cut through the knots and mats. Then you can brush them out with much less protest from the pup!
Best investment for our golden doodle
With the prickily ones (slicker comb) I always suggest to rather than just brush the top coat, you lift the fur with one hand in reverse and brush the fur down. I'll post a link to a video, around the 6 minute mark is what I mean! Using this method on the legs is a great way to keep them mat free. The metal comb is also great.
Also invest in a deshed rake. Those are amazing and can be found on amazon and any pet store.
Other then that I want to say thank you for taking good care of your flufferpupper. So many people get doodles thinking that are low maintenance but they require a lot of grooming!
Also, a dematting brush is amazing, just be careful, one side is sharp blades, always point away from the dog. These are literally a life saver. They get rid of mats without actually cutting their hair, it's my secret weapon for getting mats of doodles.
Safari De-matting Comb https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002ARR2W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_.AcmAbYH0Z41Z
Here is one on Amazon.
We got one for our cats, and it's truly great. Works better on our short haired cat than on our long haired cat.
Try using these things. They're actually brushes, but they're super gentle on the kitty and it makes them feel like you're just petting them. They may not be quite as good as a Furminator brush, but for general maintenance it should work!
I agree that it's weird and it probably isn't hygienic.
That said, I don't really think it's something you should care too much about outside of just thinking it's gross.
I can't imagine there's any risk of anything happening to you other than maybe tasting a slight weird taste if your wife kisses you immediately after licking the cat.
If this really bothers you, maybe get your wife something like this. It's supposed to be like licking a cat without actually using your tongue.
I looked for about 30 seconds before I found that, I'm sure there are dozens of other options.
Take him outside and brush him a few times a week, then give him a bath every once in awhile and brush him again

The brushing reminded me of this product that I found works really well for my cats. They both use it consistently to scratch their face even though the catnip has long since run out:

Would highly recommend, not affiliated with the product in any way.
For next year's gift - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ij9JMjCb1-o
https://www.amazon.com/PDX-Pet-Design-Licki-Brush/dp/B01M0UXYHE
This was actually my idea for my own Grandmother's odd gift that we give her every year. It was perfect especially since she has a psycho cat - and I say that as a proud cat loving guy who can name 7 different cat celebs.
If this is what you're talking about that is 1000% a furminator. I have one and instantly recognized it.
Not a fail.
Sorry to hear about your dog, so hard to lose a pet. As for keeping my place clean, I swiffer and sweep once a week (more if needed) and use a stick vac on area rugs. For furniture and my duvet covers I use this thing to keep everything clear of cat hair. I’ve never not had a cat during my life and I’ve never found anything (including vacuums, rollers etc.) that works as well as this thing does in picking up pet hair. Even works on clothes.

I use the gloves twice a week and a rake that I just bought at pet smart called “Chi for dogs double sided shedding rake”. I had read a few post about using a rake from other people on reddit and decided to give it a try.
They have these things on Amazon you can attach to the corners of your walls. Basically the same thing, only they can do it standing up and the hoomins won't take the brush away. My parents swear by them for their cats.
Mine did too.
Hairbuster is the only one i've had success with https://www.amazon.com/Small-Pet-Select-HairBuster-Comb/dp/B06ZZXF81G/ref=sr_1_3?hvadid=241940076427&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9016926&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=2240507470999736352&hvtargid=kwd-12378904679&keywords=hair+buster&qid=1553790468&s=gateway&sr=8-3

To start you kinda just gotta pet them and sneak some brushing in.
Looks about right for an hour long, once a month furminator session.
We’ve found it a lot easier to brush daily with a retractable slicker brush (like this: https://www.amazon.com/Hertzko-Self-Cleaning-Slicker-Brush/dp/B00ZGPI3OY/ ), maybe 3 minutes per day. It’s so tidy we even do it in the house.
We use the furminator maybe 2-3 times per year, in addition.
You need to get something like this [Upgrade Version] Pet Grooming Glove - Gentle Deshedding Brush Glove - Efficient Pet Hair Remover - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N9KSITZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_HT3T4TCVT6WNJMYK6MN4
Your cat will enjoy the petting and it’ll collect a lot of the hair.
I bought this thing called a Chom Chom Roller. It’s essentially a re-designed lint roller, but somehow it works much, much, better. We use it to do a quick swipe of our couch every day or so. It only takes about a minute. It’s small and easy to store near the couch which was a big plus as opposed to lugging the whole vacuum in for a one-minute job.
Source: I have two cats who shed a ton and actually own one of these! It is super useful at getting hair off of the bedspread or couch, but our favorite boss babe is definitely not using it correctly.
Here is a link to it and the video at around 1:40 shows how you’re actually supposed to use it! https://www.amazon.com/ChomChom-Roller-Dog-Hair-Remover/dp/B00BAGTNAQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=pet+hair+remover&qid=1620694023&sprefix=pet+hair+&sr=8-3#video-immersive-view_1620694051525
Damn man I had to go wash my mouth out after reading that.
For that other comment though yeah a "better alternative" for $30 you can buy a special brush to lick your disgusting cat also!
https://www.amazon.com/PDX-Pet-Design-Licki-Brush/dp/B01M0UXYHE

FYI I knew the person who invested in this nauseating product, as disgusting as it is they make thousands of dollars every month. Still to this day it blows my mind. Cat lickers are whole different species altogether.
On the pricier side, the fur buster is absolutely fanastic! I cannot stress how well this comb works. The rubber is perfect for grabbing the loose hair. 100% worth the investment
Have you ever tried/heard of the Chom Chom roller? I have a Dyson too but Chom Chom is amazing when I don't have time to take out the vacuum or just need a super quick clean up! I found it on Amazon one day and thought it was a little over priced but it had really good reviews so I thought I'd try it.
It's like a blend of one of those velvet rollers and the sticky paper kind, but somehow works 1,000 times better.
I'm not a professional groomer but I've been grooming our own dogs for way too many years to say (well, since I was a young teen). All our dogs have pretty much been non-shedding curly coats. So, I've dealt with mats from time to time.
As someone else said, unfortunately a few of those may need to be shaved - depending on time available. One thing I would highly recommend is a mat cutter. It makes a huge differences. Then you can get the rest out with a slicker brush. I use this one and it works great: https://www.amazon.com/Safari-Matting-Pet-Supplies-Accessories/dp/B0002ARR2W. One other option for those that are really matted would be top scissor cut the longer hair/mats and then use the mat cutter to break up the rest (using the slicker or similar to finish). With the mat cutter and slicker, it's not really rocked science, just some work. Those really longer mats need to be scissor trimmed or use a clipper without a guard to take off some length before using the mat cutter/brush (because a clipper with a guard/comb generally won't go through even mild mats).
You're amazing to try to help with this. I wish I could, too. Like others have said, there are way too few rescues in the US right now. There is a recent article in a New Your Magazine about it: https://www.thecut.com/2021/07/why-adopting-a-rescue-dog-is-so-hard-right-now.html?utm_source=pocket-newtab. The North East is likely especially in high demand.
Brush your dogs coat more often. Amazon sells a great product that my Alice loves. Essentially they are gloves designed to remove excess hair.

I have been using this one for a few months now. Works great!

I think the self cleaning part is Da Bomb!
I live in Texas too! This is the brush I've been using for my Aussie and found it works pretty well. She actually doesn't mind this one either and will sit still till I'm done with her https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZGPI3OY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
