I recommend iOttie!! I use the One Touch 2 (bc that was the latest one when I bought it years ago)
It's the only one I've found that mounts on my textured BMW dashboard.
Here's the newer (nicer looking, supposed to be more stable) one: iOttie Easy One Touch 4 Dashboard & Windshield Car Mount Phone Holder for iPhone X 8 Plus 7 6s SE Samsung Galaxy S9 S8 Edge S7 S6 Note 8 & other Smartphone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076B27WP6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LDOhBb0ZTEHKD
I also like magnetic ones. They are everywhere. This is one I use as well... If you have somewhere you can stick the 3M part it's great :) they also have suction cup ones of course. They exist, but in my opinion you’d be better off with some other kind of mount. They make mounts that attach to the dash (with a sticky pad included if you have some sort of textured surface on the dash). I use an older version of this mount and have been very happy with it.
I have a scosche magnetic mount and love it. mount I really like the flexible arm mount but they are all pretty nice.
Do you have an iPhone? Because if you are just interested in recording when a cop pulls you over (or something else happens) then this may be of interest
Combine that with a neat magnetic mount on your dash and you're good to go!

I put the metal piece you see on Amazon on the inside of my back cover. It works fine for me.
Depending on where you'll be traveling (i.e., depending on the temperature), you could get a magnetic phone mount that clips to your vent. Then turn the AC on - the AC will blow right at the phone!
Doubly good, since it will (hopefully) put your phone in a convenient navigation location.
I have this one and it's been great; there are tons of others on Amazon pretty cheap.
I use the iOttie One Touch dash mount. It's available on Amazon for about $25. The suction cup mint really works well, even on slight curves and textured surfaces.
Re: my accident, I was driving in the curb lane, going straight through a green light, when the other driver was obscured behind a van on the left lane, making an illegal right turn across two lanes of traffic from the center (left turn/merge only) lane. Prime example of why being a "nice guy" and letting someone make a dumb turn in front of you (like the van was doing that day) isn't really a nice thing to do at all. If he would've just kept driving like he was supposed to, the other car would've seen me and I would've seen them, and there wouldn't have been a crash.

I've used this one forever, cheap and effective. Place the steel plate inside your case without the adhesive so you can reuse it!
Yep, if your phone doesn’t have a magnetic back already you can slip a thin metal plate in the case and it holds really well, but it’s still extremely easy to take off and put on your phone.
This is similar to what I used in my mk4.
I was recommended this one by iOttie a few weeks ago: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B076B27WP6?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
Haven't used it all that much yet, but it seems to be quite well designed.
Here's the one I use. It's been with me through 5 scooters and 1 ebike lol! Still holding strong!
Not the most premium thing but it gets the job done.
Also I tried to attach it behind the main display but the curve messed it up so I settled on the window.
I just installed this right about my 4x4 lock button in my 2010 RAV4, not too obtrusive and my phone hasn’t fallen once.

Not an FSJ owner, but in my JK I got a Scosche Magic Mount which is a magnetic phone holder. It comes with an adhesive plate that you stick to the back of your phone, I just stuck it on my phone's case, and the mount itself is adhesive as well. It is awesome though, holds up on and off road, bouncing around, the phone is held very well. Not sure about the cup holder idea, hopefully someone else can help out with that.

I got the Scosche Magnetic Phone Mount for my GLI and I've only had my phone fall off of it once in the last 3 years. 10/10 purely because you just slap your phone on it and it stays. I even have a case over the magnet on my phone and it works fine.
My absolute hands down favourite mount (after trying and returning maybe 5 different options from different brands) is the iOttie One Touch Mount. It’s not magnetic but it’s just as convenient for me.

It has a button on the back of the mount that your phone rests against, and when it hits the button the sides of the mount clamp shut and grab the device. You can easily take it off by squeezing the two tabs on the side when going to reach for your phone. It’s the perfect balance of security and convenience for me, and it’s available in a QI wireless Charger variant and just a normal mount. You can also get a suction cup mount, vent mount, or CD slot mount (which is the one I’m currently using)
It’s been in my car for 2 Canadian winters now and I’ve had absolutely no problems with it. Even when it’s -30 outside. Easily the best mount and bang for your buck out there.
I have used this iOttie cell phone holder in my car for a couple of years now. It really works great. The suction cup is incredibly strong and it is easily adjusted to fit different cars. They do make different models and they all seem to get great reviews on Amazon.
Here's the one that I use: https://www.amazon.com/iOttie-Holder-iPhone-Samsung-Galaxy/dp/B00JRGOKQ8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1479078958&sr=8-2&keywords=iottie
I just went through this myself. I used this article:
http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-bluetooth-kits-for-every-car-stereo/
Their #1 recommendation doesn't do auto-connect, have to press a button each time (they do mention that). I went with their #2 recommendation.
Pay attention to the model number of the #2. The one they recommend is HB01, not HB01 Plus. They mentioned that the Plus has ground loop issues. Some people on Amazon also mentioned it, but not enough. I gave it a try... had to return cause I also had ground loop issue, along with echo on call. The recommended HB01 worked great so far.
For the mount, I got this. Have it mounted on the dashboard, but it mounts to windshield too: https://www.amazon.com/iOttie-Universal-Holder-Samsung-Packaging/dp/B01BZC262Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481859410&sr=8-1&keywords=iOttie+Easy+One+Touch+3

This is the one I've used and it's fantastic. Had it a year now and it only fell off once and it was my fault for hitting it the day before and yanking on the charger while my phone was still in it.
I bought a seat warmer off Amazon and a cigarette lighter splitter to power it.

$14.99 delivered if you have Amazon Prime. I stuck mine between the fan vents on the dash. Can see callers/songs etc without taking your eye off of the road.
I use a magnetic car mount off amazon. I used a dremel and routed out a little piece of the plastic trim around the head unit and ran the cable down that and through the center console. Then I used a switched obd2 power cable to extend to the OFT cable.
The install is super clean if you're willing to cut into your trim piece a little bit.
You care about your gf.
My gf got a $300 ticket for texting and driving.
A few years ago I was pulled over for swerving while driving, I was texting, and I told the officer I was tired and he let me off with a warning and told me to go get a red bull.
I got these for my car after her ticket a year ago and they’re game changers. Bc you don’t want to text at a stop sign, etc.
link to Amazon also on deal right now, saving 20%, I have purchased 4 of these for my varying vehicles, highly recommend
I have one of these arriving tomorrow, I'll let you know if it fits the x pure. it should easily, since it opens to 86mm wide and the x pure is less than 80mm wide.
This is the one I use. The stick on pad is on the back of my Mophie, and the magnet in the mount is strong enough to hold both the phone and the Mophie no problem.
came from a HTC M7 with a dock that I could slip my phone into very easily. Missing a dock right now as well. I'm considering this with a Qi sticker http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JRGOKQ8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00
