Pro tip - Get a couple of those cell phone gripper pads and put them on top of the Honeycomb. You can put your keyboard up there and it wont slide around.
I do like your setup, but personally I think your screen needs to be considerably closer to the yoke.
08 G35x, HDD based dealer-only map upgrade. ~$500 and the screen is woefully outdated as well. Haven't updated and using better choice of Google Maps. I'd spend a fraction of the $129 tops on a proper dash phone holder and google maps as its updated all the time WITH traffic.
Even if you don't anticipate making another trip to Boston, there are so many tolls everywhere these days that it just makes sense to have an EZ Pass for every day living.
Not to mention some toll highways (e.g. the ICC / MD 200) don't have toll booths and require payment of tolls by EZ Pass.
If permanently sticking something on your windshield bothers you, get a non-stick pad for your dashboard and put the transponder on top.
It’s decent. Fits the tray, doesn’t move. Pretty cheap price tag. Use my phone for speedo so perfect for me.
This looks like a great product, but do these gel pads eventually leave unsightly residues? Check out the buyer reviews of a similar product on Amazon. One reviewer likened this similar product to the La Brea tar pits:

I'd like to place one of these small echo dot pads on a wooden door, but I dunno...
Magnetic mount. Went to that years ago and haven't looked back This one if it's a company truck or if it's your truck this one will fit in a much smaller space on your dash. Use the large metal plate on the outside of your phone case for the most holding power. Very rarely have mine pop off on even the worst of potholes
I use this. I have done hard launches, drifted, etc. and this has never let my phone slip. It's great for CarPlay. Keeps my phone out of the way on the dash, and doesn't obstruct a vent or a cupholder.
What about something like this? Or, maybe one of those non-adhesive dash pads for phones, but larger?
In case anyone stumbles over this thread, I picked this up: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T5RHCFS?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
It is super sticky and fits the charging shelf perfectly. Like it's uncanny. It looks from the pictures like it might be too big, but it covers that area perfectly. It works great! Phone still gets super hot, but it at least will charge.
I wish VW put a little AC vent in that nook to cool down the phone.
I second this recommendation, and the same thing the one I got also isn't made...I found this one as a replacement to post: https://www.amazon.com/AONKEY-Dashboard-Universal-Smartphones-Compatible/dp/B07HX5YSP7

Was yours FITFORT brand by chance too :)

Anyway these are great, no adhesive, stays put, and can charge while your in there, great for directions.
We went on a road trip recently and I cannot sing the praises of this device enough:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GCI7BCI?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details. Put it on the dash right over the radio.
Consider covering it with a non skid mat to hold your phone, etc. Here's one example
Neither of these have a slip-resistant cover. I found this slip-resistant pad that I can cut off a section and stick it to my phone https://www.amazon.com/BLAU-GRUN-Dashboard-Sunglasses-Electronic/dp/B09GLTTTTW/
Ordered it from Amazon and it provides no slip-resistance whatsoever. I have no idea why people are ok with their phone flying off their lap or dash or seat. I found this slip-resistant pad that I can cut off a section and stick it to my phone https://www.amazon.com/BLAU-GRUN-Dashboard-Sunglasses-Electronic/dp/B09GLTTTTW/
I've used these for a while in two Foresters and they work great. They may seem like they're super sticky and may ruin the dash, but they go on, stay put, and come off easily with nothing ruined.
When they lose their grip, just wash them off with some dish detergent and water and they're good as new.
Just buy a magnet off of Amazon and place it between your phone and case.

That's where I put my facial tissue box (but hiding the Tesla logo towards the screen.

It's held in place by a friction pad.

It never slid out of place.
yes, this one! have been using the same one for over a year, life saver for sure.

I use a sticky pad on top of the console near the top screen. I've used these in a bunch of vehicles. They're great and you can wash them with soap and water to get the stickiness back when it starts collecting dust.
if that’s the route you wanted to go, it might be better to use some of those non-slip cell phone pads
Extra Large & Thick Sticky Pad for Car Dashboard, MINI-FACTORY Universal Non-Slip Grip Mat for Cell Phones, Sunglasses, Keys, Decoration Gadgets https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZXQSKN7/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_navT_a_EZEFMR790HPRMT3KBZDP
the big requirements being that the bottom of the pedals would have to be flat and smooth, and so would whatever surface you put the pad on, so it makes full contact with the pad and the pad itself doesn’t move around
Probably not exact, but I bought this off Amazon a few weeks ago that fills perfectly inside that tray, so give or take here, but 6.2 x 4.2 x 2 inches
If you haven't already bought something, this is the best one i found so far. It fits perfect (with a little trimming) in the middle dash pocket thing (can't think of what it's called now) above the radio if you don't have the nav/screen. My wife kept borrowing it so I bought one for her too. Nothing to wear out.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V8LCNNK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_IcQXFb8ZG2TQS I just got an AP too and bought this magic mount. I'm planning on mounting it on the windshield, next to the a-pillar. It's a strong magnet and holds onto the AP strong.
$13, update Google Maps, problem solved
Roads, routes, POI's, restaurants open up daily and factory nav's literally cannot update fast enough. Not to mention traffic is an extra subscription (at least in my 08 G sedan). Google maps takes care of it all
I keep remembering things...
One of these on the hump between the seats to keep a box of Puffs in place. We are also looking at a garbage bag that will fit along with the Puffs.

Four of these for the dash and "bridge"
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LW9P1GC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I've seen a couple people with this universal holder (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07HX5YSP7/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_DnRoFb8P9DYMN ) and they'll drill the corner of the tray and feed a USB cable through the dash so its hidden except for the ends.
I really don't use mine so I'm interested to see if others have a creative idea to re-purpose it.
I cut 2 of these up, one under the Anker Batter Pack for the dash, and one on top of the Anker to secure the Stratus.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V5099GU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Nice sticky stuff, but doesn't mar up the dash of the Schools 172P.
Just my two cents, I had this same holder in my '16 and didn't care for how it blocked a large part of my touchscreen head unit. I'm looking for a new phone mount as well.
I'm looking at either this: https://www.amazon.com/IPOW-Generation-Anti-slip-Lightweight-Dashboard/dp/B01GCI7BCI/ref=pd_sbs_107_3?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01GCI7BCI&pd_rd_r=1W482C1GQR75ACWFQBCG&pd_rd_w=I15cP&pd_rd_wg=ouIh4&psc=1&refRID=1W482C1GQR75ACWF...
I would probably use the first one and stick it in front of the top display because the larger touchscreen has my backup cam, and I've found I rarely look at the top lil display. I like where that sits because it's within my eyesight while driving and I would prefer that so I wouldn't have to take my eyes off the road.
The bottom one, I like how that would be adjustable and sit probalby just below the temperature controls, and would be able to plug it in while using the phone.
Probalby gonna order both and send back whatever I don't like.
This is probably a much more small scale project than most of you are used to, but I used to have a metal-backed phone battery case specifically designed for use with magnetic mounts. That particular case started having some issues that I heard were common for the brand, so I decided to get a new one, but it's not magnetic and I've really become fond of using magnetic mounts. I have a couple metal mounting plates that are supposed to go on the back of the phone, or between the phone and the case, but the magnets don't seem to be quite strong enough when the case is between the plate and the mount. I'm considering moving the plate to the outside of the case to maximize the connection, but I'd like something to cover/protect the metal plate so minimize it snagging on things or just ruining the look of the case.
Does anyone know of anything I could use to basically put a VERY thin rubber-like layer over the outside of my phone case to help with the idea? The first thing that comes to mind is kind of like vacuum-forming a balloon, just to give you a better idea of what I'm trying to do in case my description doesn't help, which I probably doesn't.
I honestly don't know. My friends showed up one day with a grin and a bag of walkie talkies like they just solved world hunger. I would check for you, but they're 5 hours away back home :/
I mean, they weren't anything special. Just that usual yellow / black one. Not very far range, but they did what was needed. Also you can get one of those sticky stomp pad things that will hold your phone or walkie talkie on the dashboard. Also forget the exact name of those, so I'm not much help at all haha.
edit: something like this
