We used this baby carrier cover. It has elastic all around the edge, so I would layer up baby a bit and put him in and then put this one around the carrier. It covered up his feet well. If it wasn't too cold I did this with my jacket just opened and him on front. When it got colder though I zipped up my jacket around me and then put the carrier on top. This has pockets in the front which is nice to keep my hands on him and also warm.
oh yea, they are universal. it just hands around your neck to cover the baby. it doesnt connect to the carrier in any way. Heres an example.
For baby wearing, I used the Jolly Jumper cover. I made due with my regular coat and this and trying to kind of keep things wrapped up but I probably should have sprung for some sort of baby wearing jacket or extension for my coat. I dressed kiddo in layers and zutano fleece booties. Look for fleece-lined knit caps, there are tons of options out there. They will say like 0-6 months usually.
If you do something over the car seat, make sure it's a "shower cap" style. Meaning it has elastic to go around the car seat and doesn't have the harness thread through holes in the cover. Something like this JJ Cole cover.
My first babe was born in November and we live in the upper midwest. We did lots of baby-wearing because our town is terrible about clearing sidewalks and they were impassable in a stroller.
I have the Moby baby wearing hoodie which is nice but not necessarily practical to use all the time (if gets spit up on we take a while to finish laundry lol). I also got a cheap maternity jacket with #2 so I might try that this year if it gets cold enough. Mainly I use this cover and then wear my own jacket or w/e. I like that I can use it with carrier or stroller. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0159VZBNA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
Soft booties that have a velcro strap at the ankle, like others have mentioned, are great.
I wore babycarrier blankets/jackets from Uniqlo and Amazon Japan. I just searched Amazon US and found this similar type of carrier blanket: Jolly Jumper Snuggle Cover for Soft Baby Carriers, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001P1VBH4/ . Good luck!
I had my boy at 31 weeks two months ago, so he’s two weeks adjusted right now. I’ve taken him inside to grocery once and to Starbucks once, but I got a big clip for his car seat that says “please do not touch” and I hang it right in front so they’d basically have to stick their hands around it to get to him. So far people have commented on the sign (saying what a good idea) but haven’t touched him. Sign from Amazon:

You can get a waist extender for the Lillebaby carriers. They fit the Tula carriers, too!
Lillebaby has a pad for this! this worked for us!
Depends on if his big bro was carrying a backpack with our water bottles and snacks or not. If he was carrying his little backpack then I just wore it empty, sometimes just clicked around my waist and I let it flap down, sometimes had it empty in “backpack” mode.
If I had a big backpack that meant I was carrying him on my front anyway so I’d either keep it in place if I thought he’d need to get back in soon but if we were in a flat away from cliffs area and he was awake and wanting to run is stuff it in the backpack!
Also for winter I recommend a blanket/cover type thing... that way baby stays warm! I used this one and it worked just fine!

Are you using an Ergo infant insert? I used this one https://www.amazon.com/Ergobaby-Easy-Infant-Insert-Natural/dp/B01ET1L3G0%3Fpsc%3D1%26SubscriptionId%3DAKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q%26tag%3Dduckduckgo-iphone-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB01ET1L33I?th=1&psc=1
And I liked it a lot. It held her in place really well and supported her head. After she grew out of the insert, I'm still using the butt pillow at 4 months.
The Roocoat is one option. It fits over both you and the baby, and keeps baby warm with your own body heat. Not so aesthetically pleasing, perhaps, but you and your husband might both be able to fit.
I just got this cover today, and I love it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0159VZBNA/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_j4zLwbDZ44QS1
It's still pretty lightweight, but layered with a little snow suit/bunting, etc it's nice and warm and gives a little extra protection from wind and rain. It'll also be perfect in early spring and fall by itself.
I got the Jolly Jumper Arctic car seat cover - haven't used it with the baby yet, but it seems super-warm and will be good for getting the car seat from inside to in the car. For baby-wearing with a coat, I have my eye on this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0159VZBFI/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=7GIDDHEMDMX6&coliid=I3M9H0AGGY6Z3T&psc=1
I looked at all the zip-in panels for coats but none are compatible with my winter coat, and I need a woman's tall coat so trying to purchase one with a compatible zipper isn't an option.
