Oooh Madeleine! Free-thinking girl.
Or this book, which tells children that labels are silly, and it's about who they are inside: Red: A Crayon's Story https://www.amazon.com/dp/0062252070/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_JVCcCbXANDCVW
Cute!
Was curious where it was from, looks to be a book called Paint by sticker, https://www.amazon.com/Paint-Sticker-Create-Masterpieces-Time/dp/0761187235/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1518416422&sr=8-1&keywords=paint+by+sticker
I used Red: A Crayon's Story when explaining myself to my kids. It's great for younger children, but an 8-year-old should still find it enjoyable. Plot spoiler: a blue crayon comes mislabelled as red, and is encouraged by everyone to try to draw red things, with laughable results. Finally discovers that drawing blue things actually works, despite the label.

I would get whoever wrote that list this.
Just as an aside ... don't know if you have seen it .. there is a book called Red: A Crayon's Story that many children and also adults love. It can also help children understand, and it can motivate them to listen to what they feel would make them happy.
Take a look at the children's book named "Red, a Crayon's Story". It's one of my toddler's favorite books, and I personally love the message. It's about a blue crayon that has been labelled red. Here's a link to the book on Amazon: https://smile.amazon.com/Red-Crayons-Story-Michael-Hall/dp/0062252070
It definitely does have the same effect! This is the coloring book I am currently using. I like gel pens, since you don't have to keep sharpening them like you do with colored pencils.
#5 is the most interesting to me. #12 reminds me of Richard Scarry, like something out of "Cars and Trucks and Things that Go".
Not quite sure where you're going with this so let me refer you to
I just got this for my son. He’s been having trouble with it, but it seems like a good starting point.
Hi! I brought mine from https://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/animal-crossing-official-sticker-book-nintendo/28860584
But here is an Amazon link also

I just flashed back to this book lol Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business https://www.amazon.com/dp/0064431436/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_MN9Q8ZV8NWP5YYHZN8Q2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
What about one of those sticker books that's like paint by numbers but with stickers or a coloring book? like this
Would the mom be ok with you giving children's books? My friend's son was obsessed with bugs at that age so I got him some kid books about bugs and a sticker book that was bug focused.
If they swim you could get them a cool kickboard or something for the beach.
If the mom has a style that she really likes, then maybe she would be more accepting of something in that style. My friend loves montessori stuff and asked for no toys at a recent birthday, but someone got wooden block animals and she gushed about them! (her daughter is 2)
Schedule tests now! If wait times are a week near you, schedule your test for a week from now so you have it when you need it!
Also, one year olds aren't super needy, but when my 2 yo had it we got new coloring books and crayons and some big fun books (like this or ISpy) that he could flip through and stare at on his own when I needed a break.
Also, this water paint book and it's truck sibling were clutch.
This one flew under the radar for me, but was a pleasant surprise! There is an Official Animal Crossing Sticker book that is releasing as of January 8th, preorders are available as we speak. It's not a huge release, but definitely something to keep us occupied and amused while we wait for the next Nintendo Direct!

I have included a link to the pages available for preview.

I preordered it on Amazon, it was just released on January 8th. :) Here is the link: Animal Crossing Official Sticker Book (Nintendo) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1524772623/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_S4TnCbDRCVGZP
I have been doing one of those paint by sticker kits. Takes me a couple of hours and it’s fun. Takes my mind off that I’m getting egg retrieval on Monday!

If you want to learn via book try reading queer kids books. A personal favorite of mine is Red: a crayon's story
There's plenty of kids books to learn and I think they're all great! Maybe you can show your kids them too if they're old enough to understand what you saying
There's an official sticker book that's sold on Amazon!
Here's the link! It's currently on sale for $8, but usually about $13. It's also an activity book, though I mainly got it for the stickers/customizing things with them.
I will be doing a sketch! The back of my journal has a folder flap so I'll be storing the sketch in there for reference.
If there are no disturbing influences, children can be more accepting than adults.
Some people explain like a can : they are the gender they identify with inside (can) and are about to change the outside ( labels etc).
I know of someone who tried to explain to a kid. Someone else in the room just said : they regenerated ( a Dr. Who concept). The child looked in awe. If the concept is known, it may be easy to explain.
And as book you may like Red: A Crayon's Story
And in general a few things from this post might also be helpful. There are explaining resources there, etc.

All of this is up to you .. sometimes the kind of explanation can play a role with acceptance. A few things along those lines might help.
And leaving religion out of it and making it a biological and medical issue may be an option.
Some people compare it to epilepsy, which is along the same lines of brain stuides and where especially religious people also presumed all kinds of things even a few decades ago. Its now accepted its biological.
In the link above are also hints concerning looking for support. PFLAG for example might support lgbt people and also relatives, and they may know someone others may accept as authotities, like accepting ministers.

And if they are older this may help show that important is how people feel and not outer body parts, and that identity and orientation etc. are different things :

I went on a "shopping spree" and spent like $40 at two thrift stores to get some new summer clothes. I buy mostly used clothing, so it tends to wear out a bit faster. When I'm done with a piece, depending on the shape it's in, I'll either re-donate it, throw it away, or re-purpose it into something else.
I also bought a paint-by-sticker book ($10) because I've been wanting one for a while and I love stickers.
Oh and I bought the entire series of The Cosby Show on DVD ($30) which I've also been wanting for a while. Slowly working on accumulating DVDs of all my favorite shows that I like to watch over and over. I want to then rip them onto my computer for more convenient access.
Most of my extra money is spent on food. I really need to cut down.
They are kind of everywhere right now but this is my favorite, you can get it on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Secret-Garden-Inky-Treasure-Coloring/dp/1780671067/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1470924051&sr=8-10&keywords=adult+coloring+book
I try to go for something a little more intricate that takes a little extra time. :)
