Ok so here it is I ordered 1 12U open server rack from Amazon a couple weeks ago. First package never showed up so Amazon said it probably got lost in shipping and they'd send me another one. Second one was supposed to be delivered yesterday but got a notice saying it couldn't be delivered (don't blame em) and I'd have to go pick it up from the local Post Office.
Show up this morning and the guy says I hope you have a truck and tells me to drive around to the loading dock. I was confused but went along with it thinking it was just heavy (40-50lbs rack). I go back and he is sitting there with a pallet. I realize what happened at that moment. After we load em up he asks when I'm coming back for the other pallet? Apparently the 1st order was there also. Told him to return the other pallet to sender.
Checked my Amazon order and confirmed the quantity was 1 and I was also only charged for 1 (about $210). Should I contact Amazon about this or just keep quiet and see what happens? We're talking about $2300 worth of server racks here.
edit: Don't bother asking for one at this point, I've got a long list of people messaging me for a chance to get one. First come first serve. There's not enough to go around any more. Merry Christmas.
edit edit: UPDATE! So I reached out to Amazon's customer support, they said I could keep the extras and assured me I wouldn't be charged. I made it very clear that I wanted to do the right thing and would return them, if it could be arranged, since I didn't pay for all these but they said don't worry about it. Took screenshots as proof. I'll probably get my Amazon account removed.... I'm still going to wait a month or so before distributing any to friends, family, and my fellow lucky redditors.
If you have Amazon prime, they have a 42U for $300.

On sale for Prime Day. Great NAS, though my recommendation would be to look at a 4-bay unit instead and consider 8TB drives or larger instead of 4TB drives.
Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS920+ (Diskless), 4-bay; 4GB DDR4 for 440 anyone seen a better deal on this? Looking to possibly pull the trigger on one today.

If you're okay with open racks, you could check the Startech 12U one, I have the 25U one and it's good quality IMO. Here is the amazon page; https://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-Adjustable-Depth-Server-Cabinet/dp/B00P1RJ9LS/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=startech%2Brack&qid=1553636746&s=gateway&sr=8-5&th=1
I use a NAS that has a private "cloud" program. It's like my own personal dropbox. The NAS is a RAID array so if a harddrive fails, I have a mirror, and it can also back up the entire thing to Amazon S3 which is dirt cheap "cloud" storage. I highly reccomend a NAS setup... This one is great on a budget. (Keep in mind you'll have to get two drives to go in this thing too).
It doubles as a DNS server, FTP server, Web server, Virtual Machine host, Surveillance Camera station and will even host a podcast RSS feed for you!
19" is the most common. Craigslist is the best place to look for cheap racks, many people buy them and fail to use them so sell cheap to regain space or companies renewing hardware, going out of business, etc. Otherwise Amazon has some good deals from time to time like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVKOPBW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LfJTCb6N5D4G9
You definitely want to build a seperate raid storage server, which will better protect your data. It's easy to do and can be done without much extra expense besides the cost of the drives. I'd go with 4 seagate 8TB drives. Instead of building your own you can buy the drives and a ready-made raid server, like this fancy one, or this basic one.
*Cheapest you'll find new hard drives is about $15 per terabyte. So you're looking at a likely $700 storage solution, after tax
For the time, money and hackering you're going to invest on this, assuming you have or can buy the rails for your server better get a 12U rack like this and you're done.
Or you can buy these and mount them to hold the server at the very bottom of your rack, just beware it might tip off at somepoint if there's too much tinkering on it.
It sounds like what you want is a NAS, like Synology. You buy something like this, add one or two drives, and you can access it over wifi.
The only irony here is that /u/MegaHz may not know amazon.ca exists:
https://www.amazon.ca/StarTech-com-12-Inch-Mounting-Bracket-WALLMOUNT6/dp/B000VDPBXM
$50 CAD, free shipping. Of course if you're buying from US Amazon, it's going to SHIP from the US.
I feel like this price is a bit too much, its 169 brand new on amazon without the drives. I promise I am not trying to shit in your cereal - most people interested in NAS technologies would be buying 4tb drives minimum. Maybe you can get rid of the 1tb drive pair, but I know that I would prefer just the chassis.

Wood is a great dissipater of heat! I kid.
How much did you really save over just buying an amazon rack: StarTech.com 42U 4 Post Open Frame Server Rack - Floor Standing Network Data Cabinet (4POSTRACK42) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVKOPBW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_E5IjDbCXE99WJ
Network Attached Storage (NAS) is simply a computer with lots of hard drive space attached to my home network. Plex is an application that can interface with a NAS to provide a nice UI for a media library.
The NAS holds my media files, and I use Plex to play them. Blu Ray / 4k BluRay are high resolution digital video formats.
Used this for a couple of builds for small clients. $207 with prime. I got this one
Deal of the day for Prime Members: Synology 2 Bay NAS DiskStation DS220+ (Diskless) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B087ZCBWFH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_D7F4JGJ0CDNQC53T5Z10
The 4 Bay one is also discounted
For racks, there are lots of good options on Amazon, like the StarTech 6U wall-mounted network rack which I've seen mentioned on here several times and I've installed two of.
Just gotta be careful with the depth and what you plan to put in it. For example, a UDM-Pro will fit, and a UNVR will need a right-angled power cable but will have very little clearance in the back. That USW-24-PoE you have will fit as well. But if you want to upgrade to the 24 Pro or the 48 at some point, those may not fit.
I have this one, I have it set up for the deepest depth it goes. I’m selling it for $200 so I can get a smaller one. I don’t need one this big.
If you got the money I would still go with a NUC and a Synology NAS. You might want to run more things down the road like a Plex. Yes yes Plex also run on a Synology but when I was doing that it was a pain in the butt mainly with updates.
Do note though, DO NOT get the DiskStation DS220j model. You can install Home Assistant but not docker. I think it has to do with that model running on an ARM cpu? That model also only has 512MB RAM.
I started with this small 6U 19” rack
StarTech.com 6U Wall Mount Network Equipment Rack - 14 Inch Deep - 19" Patch Panel Bracket for Shallow Server Equipment- 44lbs Capacity (WALLMOUNT6) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VDPBXM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_UjhYFbS6A5MMB
It’s shallow do you need to get the shorter depth shelves like this :
StarTech.com 1U Fixed Server Rack Mount Shelf - 10in Deep Steel Universal Cantilever Tray for 19" AV/Network Equipment Rack - 44lbs (CABSHELF1U10) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071RN1858/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_hnhYFbW0TD257
Nice wire work.
Yeah I have looked at a whole home storage option. I dont think I have quite gotten to that point yet. I am upgrading my PC next year, I might get one of these to go along.
This the one you have? https://www.amazon.com/Synology-DiskStation-DS220j-Diskless-2-bay/dp/B0855LMP81/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=nas&qid=1605290370&sr=8-3
I'd second this OP. The J-series is great for backups and light tasks but if you're going to have a few or more users connecting a lot then you're going to be finding bottlenecks quick. If you're going to be serving and possibly transcoding movies for the whole family you're probably going to want a plus model. There's a huge deal on the DS920+, you'd be smart to jump on it: https://www.amazon.com/Synology-DiskStation-DS920-Diskless-4-bay/dp/B087Z34F3R/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=synology+ds920%2B&qid=1602623479&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&sr=8-1
Yeah my plan is to get something like this, but I only have 1 rack mount case. Shelves are easy enough to buy but I want to be able to have a clean looking front so I can keep wires clean and standard.
If this is a new build make sure to future proof. With more and more motherboards showing up with 10Gbe widespread 10G access is not far off now.
Use cat6a or cat7 for the house wiring, way cheaper to do it now then have to try and run it later.
I'd personal use a wall mounted rack and just put the patch panel and switches on it.
Thank you! I bought it from Amazon and received it the next day. Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087Z34F3R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_z5ndFb057G3MJ
The drives took a couple extra days: Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H289S79/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_u7ndFbKHARYK4
I haven't tried out Plex yet, but when I do I'll report back my thoughts! 👊
I found the Amazon UK page by changing the .com url, so there is an entry at least, even if there's no price.
However it does say: >Date first available at Amazon.co.uk: 18 Jun. 2020
Which is only 1 day after Span, so sounds potentially likely. It's a bit strange no other retailers have it up for order apart from Span yet though.
