Not OP. This book IIRC referred to it as brown, not clear.
Weirdly, Tomatoland was a big jump-off point for me. The author writes about the literal slavery that tomato pickers experience and the horrible working conditions, and in the back of my mind the entire time, I was like, "Yeah, and slaughterhouse workers somehow even have it worse."
I haven't eaten a fresh tomato in winter that wasn't locally grown in years; it also made sense to give up other exploitative products.
