I bought this dishwasher back in August 2020. I love it. It's perfect for a single person, I can typically fit an entire day's worth of dishes in there.
If I do cook, I will need to run multiple loads if I am washing pots/pans (depending on the size). That part ought to be obvious given the size of the dishwasher.
I suppose it's quiet? I honestly don't hear it from the other room (but then all of the devices manufacturers are pushing to make "quiet" never had a noise level that bothered me in the first place).
My only real complaint: If you do multiple loads in a row, you have to turn on the air drying mechanism. It enters into a weird Schrodinger's state after a load, and the light for it will blink. You have to turn that mechanism off and then on again. I would prefer for the air refresh would either recognize the door opened, and thus turned itself fully off.
I have this dishwasher on an old microwave cart next to the kitchen sink. It easily drains into the sink with the tube provided, and since it's right by the sink, I don't have to carry the jug of water very far to fill the dishwasher's tank (note: You could also hook this up to the sink to be filled as well... I did not).
Others are giving you good advice on the FF front; here is dishwasher advice (if you have looked at these already, my apologies). I have lived in tiny-kitchened apartments for a while and only graduated to a full size portable dishwasher recently. Prior to this, I owned several (in succession, they lasted about 2 years before dying) of these countertop dishwashers. They are a lifesaver for apartment living - about the size of a large microwave or toaster oven, the height calibrated to fit in the average gap between countertop and cabinets.
Cons: They are not as nice as a full size dishwasher - small in capacity (maybe 4 place settings at a time) and can't handle the worst of the dirty (no baked on/caked on food). Also: getting parts for repairs is somewhere between impossible and HAHAHAHAHA no. So in many ways, if it breaks outside of warranty you have to throw it out (and because the price of a repair guy call might be nearly equal to the price of a new one). But - at $200-250, it is something that can be budgeted for to replace.
Pros: Future marital bliss (drastically reduce arguing over dishes). You don't have to do nearly as many dishes by hand. Confound the MIL (just put them in the dishwasher! What dishwasher?) You don't have to do nearly as many dishes by hand. Did I mention, you don't have to do nearly as many dishes by hand?
Look on amazon for "countertop dishwashers" - there are a bunch of varying quality around that $225 price point, and I haven't had one for several years so I don't know which is currently the best.
I had this one for three years before I moved. I was the best purchase! OOS now. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004MX8XO6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The dishes came out as clean as my current full size dishwasher. Space of course is an issue, it wont fit extremely large bowls. So with two people, we needed to hand wash a few large items. On Amazon you can pics of the inside, to get an idea of capacity. 99% of the models are the same.
Get a portable, countertop dishwasher. It takes up about as much space as a full sized microwave, only slightly taller, than wide. Here's an example on Amazon .
I don't have that exact model, but a similar one. You pour water in the top instead of using hoses attached to a faucet. You just need the drain hose in the sink or could possibly get away with a bucket if that's easier. It won't fit huge items, but fits a damn good amount. It's perfect for a household of two. It's literally the best thing we ever did for our kitchen, which lacks a good spot for a built-in or a larger portable.
Honestly, anyone without a dishwasher should give those a look. Ours even has a sanitize cycle for fruits and vegetables.
I use this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VR22832/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's small, so sometimes I have to run it several times (when I can't load it for a few days), but since I live by myself, it's not really a problem. I'm pretty happy with it.
I have this model and can personally vouch for how nice it is (I have it set next to my sink so it drains right into it), but there are definitely cheaper options.
Probably this one? https://www.amazon.com/COMFEE-WQP4-2601-Dishwasher-Place-Settings/dp/B092227VYL
Apparently you fill it with water manually via a hole in the top, so I wonder how that works with this setup...
That area rocks. I have a counter dishwasher that works relatively well. (below)
But I feel you on the dishwasher, in general. It's landlords not really caring in a perennial seller's market.
I have this one
hOmeLabs Compact Countertop Dishwasher - Energy Star Portable Mini Dish Washer in Stainless Steel Interior for Small Apartment Office and Home Kitchen with 6 Place Setting Rack and Silverware Basket https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074PYH768/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NAVESXMJSJF9HN5D488P?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
This isn't really answering your question but maybe solving your issue a little. There are countertop dishwashers that you can buy even without hooking it up to a water source. It's not huge, obviously, but it could help.
Here's an example :
They are expensive ($300-500), but it would be worth it if you can spare the expense.
bro you gotta get one of these man, absolute game changer. it changes the game
One you've probably never heard of Home labs.
It's an upscure brand and it more expensive than it should be because it's a countertop dishwasher.
They're generally more popular in countries other than America, I have a 200 square foot apartment, with no ability to change the plumbing and the sink that's too small to do dishes in.

Definitely! The one I'm looking at right now is actually a countertop model that will sit on top of my stove with the burners removed from it so it doesn't burn itself

We used one of these - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074PYH768/ - for most of the pandemic. Had a minor gasket leak after 18 months and they replaced the whole unit under warranty. Was $300ish back then.
The one we have is this one (I think): https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B089YD3Z91/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_NXD9C432PYZ715WWHTE8
But there's actually a bunch of brands that sell this exact model (it's pretty generic), so I'm sure there's some cheaper under a different name.
As far as recommend goes, I'm not well versed in the market. We needed one, we bought one. It does the job we wanted it for (washing and sanitizing small to medium items), but we still hand wash larger items that either don't fit at all (pots and pans), or would take up too much space.
Regardless, I would also get a dish tub, like one of these: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00AVWE7O2/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_EQ5FTXV9SPA1DPFAAZZN
They help reduce the amount of water and soap you waste while handwashing dishes, since you can reuse the soapy water.

Embarrassingly, I haven't yet unpacked it (have been overwhelmed with other things). So I can't speak to its quality. BUT i did a ton of research before purchasing, and got this one:
you can also research these types of dishwashers in general by using search words like "countertop dishwasher with built in water tank."
PSA: Counter top dishwashers are a thing that exists. You can't fit a ton in there but even if it just gets the crockery and cutlery done it makes a massive difference.
I can recommend this Comfee one.
This is the dishwasher:

i had the same issues and internal debate over whether a countertop dishwasher was worth it (especially since i have very limited counter space) but honestly the dishes were just not getting done no matter what i did so i caved and bought one. and it has absolutely been worth every penny and more!! like it’s literally priceless for me. this is the one i got and i love it (though i got it for half the price, i’m sure you could find it somewhere else or something similar for cheaper)
i honestly really think it’s worth it to save up for one, you know yourself best and if it’s not gonna get done without a dishwasher the best solution may just have to be a dishwasher
NTA she has to take care of the dishes in a communal area. However, she can buy a $300 countertop dishwasher if that makes things easier for her.
This one is pretty great, it has a mode for sterilizing baby stuff but I haven't used it yet. The thing I like the most is that it has a 5L tank, and so you can actually avoid hooking it up to a faucet by just directly filling it with an included jug, leaving the faucet open for other uses, and then it just drains directly into the sink.
Any reason why you aren't going with a more built-in solution though? You can't really fit pans into these portable dishwashers. All I can fit is some dishes and utensils and cups. There's a raises area for glasses but only short glasses, any taller ones have to take up space on the bottom rack, which takes away from the dish capacity.
Maybe a countertop dishwasher like this?

Get a countertop dishwasher if at all possible. Seriously. I would rather die than go back to the hell of handwashing dishes.
kind of a side answer to what may be your question... but i'm familiar with this because i'm renovating my folks' kitchen for them and they have some significant mobility issues, and it may be useful info.
countertop dishwashers are a thing. for example, https://www.amazon.com/Farberware-Professional-FCD06ABBWHA-Countertop-Dishwasher/dp/B07VMTF2Y4/
can't speak about official ADA compliance for this, but i'm adding this instead of a regular dish washer so that they can load the thing without having to bend down.
twisting and bending isn't really an option for them, so this will let them do everything at a regular standing height.
I have this one and it’s awesome. I bought one off mercari for like half the price though.
