I find there are authors that are better at keeping my attention than others.
I really like Christopher Moore. He's got a bit of a dark, silly , witty sense of humor, he's descriptive with out being wordy. If you liked Dead Like Me, you'll really enjoy A Dirty Job.
Janet Evanovich has a less dark, equally silly, witty sense of humor. Most of my family has read her 'Stephanie Plum' series.
They both have very 'cinematic' writing styles. For whatever reason, given the motivation, I can chew through either of those authors' books.
Ha! I dont blame you. That's just an aggregator link that collects all the amazon stores into one link, otherwise I have to post a link per individual store. Here's the US one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086HWQ5Y1
The Rogues of the Republic trilogy, Patrick Weekes (known for his writing in the Dragon Age games).
There’s a degree of progression fantasy, but it’s better described as 3 heist books in a fantasy world. Genuinely one of my favourite ever series - well written, great plot and the world building is top notch. I came across it by accident and only gave it a chance because all of the books are on KU.
I’d describe the characters as if you set up a party in a TTRPG, but built them to be the rogue version of each class - eg, wizard specialising in illusion, but actually each very well developed and distinct.

Not to be that guy, but there are a lot of errors, like "theather".
You mention having an editor, I would suggest running the description on the amazon page by them, there are several other errors in there.
"propriety unhabitants," not sure, but I think you might mean "property's inhabitants".
The description is one of the main selling points of the book, so it's important to have it look good.
Also, you can trim the extra stuff off of the url: https://www.amazon.com/Dark-Magic-Papyrus-Ancient-Thriller-ebook/dp/B09R6FKJYS
Hi!
I'm posting my Dark Fantasy Triller set in Ancient Egypt (Middle Kingdom).
The story context is quite accurate (people's activities, clothes, food, architecture, vegetation, mores etc...) and the book was professionally edited.

That's the down side, but it's not all that bad.
Sign up, get the book, then unsubscribe to the newsletter. Easy peasy. I do it all the time.
As a writer my perspective on this is simple: if my book doesn't convince you to stay subscribed, then I'd rather not pay for you to be on my mailing list, they charge me by the number of subscribers.
You can have my book without signing up, but I don't give a shit about subscribers that much. If my book doesn't convince you to read the rest of the series, then you're not my target audience. I appreciate the time you took to read my story, sorry it wasn't your cup of tea.

So I'm a newb sci-fi author (2 novels and 3 novellas published, book 3 out next week), and this is entirely down to money. I chose to go down the indie publishing route for a variety of reasons (I had a trad offer but turned it down). So, in the indie world a book is typically $2.99 for a new author. Of that you get 70% = $2.09c gross per sale. That's for a years work. For a first novel most Indies (myself included) sell them for 99c, which at 30% = $0.29c. You need to go cheap on book 1 otherwise your sales really suffer. So 30c per sale for all the work isn't a lot. BUT if the reader likes your books, and then they read book 2, then book 3 you start to make a very very small income from each sale.
You also have to advertise etc which eats up all that extra money from the first 3-4 books, that why you get series now of ten books etc.
I'm not doing that as its too boring (for me) so I'm writing trilogies in the same world, but entirely different characters, settings etc.
So, yeah, "its just money" but without series there'd be hardly any new authors working. For reference my books take around $2k to publish due to editors, covers, etc so I'm looking at 5 years minimum to even start making a profit. I'm in it for the long term hence these up front costs, there's so much cheap cr*p out there, as has been noted here.
Hope this answer helps! 😀

I bought full Forward collection on Amazon.com.
But if some kindle store does not support grouping, shouldn't all books be visible in the library anyway (i.e. separately)?
Here is that link in comments that OP was talking about.

The Forward Series, it's free on amazon prime reading, it's a collection of several short stories - each one written by a different author. I find the series is similar to black mirror - each one involves a bit of sci-fi/technology futuristic type stuff.. fun reads.

I wouldn't pay $1.99 each or even the $5.94 for the bundle of 6 (not good enough to offset the length to make it worth the $$$) but https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WK7PVFT

EDIT: Looking now, not seeing the $5.94 bundle, but I remember seeing it last night. *shrug*
The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson. I enjoyed it as much as Gone Girl. I don't want to give away too much about it, but it's right up your alley.
These books look cool! Thanks for sharing.
>I actually read about this some time back in two GREAT and well-researched novels called Power of the Dog and The Cartel.
>Actually I learned more about the drug war in those 2 novels than I've learned anywhere else.
Alas, I'm seeing

Thanks for sharing this book.
I'll second the recommendation for The Palace Job by Patrick Weekes for what you're looking for. It's a comedic fantasy heist story.
I'll also second the recommendation for the Vlad Taltos books.
Finally, you might also like Mother of Learning, which is a web serial about a mage stuck in a time loop.
I'm currently reading The Power if the Dog by Don Winslow. It's a fantastic crime/thriller about the start of the War on Drugs. The sequel just got released and looked interesting enough that I had to buy the first book before I read it.
The Stephanie Plum series from Janet Evanovich fits those criteria. I'm not the biggest fan, but I know lots of people love 'em. Starts with One for the Money.
