lol way ahead of you, picked up one of those leather dice mats in the same amazon order. And it looks like I snagged one of the last all brown ones too!
The wait until our session tomorrow afternoon where I get to pass them out is somehow getting longer with every passing day lol
I recommend this tray because you will do better on a softer surface and it unclips flat to fit into your notebook. They have many colors, that one is purple like your first dice!
Ah, I'm sorry to hear about yours. I roll mine in this rolling tray and it seems like they're fine as there are no solid surfaces to hit.
My party probably thinks I'm super finicky, always putting the dice right back into the case, but I'm just really familiar with how brittle small pieces of stone can be if they're hit just right.
Just get some dice trays for them, they're super cheap nowadays!

A whole stack of them for $13, plus they fold flat when not in use.
They're a lifesaver for this and any other game with dice
A copy of the PHB for sure. Essentials Kit and Starter Kit is a nice, cheap start to DMing. A nice set of dice, a dice tray. Those work for both players and DMs, obvi. I'm a fan of this style (https://www.amazon.com/Rolling-Storage-Folding-Leather-High-Class/dp/B07MYQZG4M/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=rolling+tray+dnd&qid=1607359576&s=toys-and-games&sr=1-3), I keep all my stuff in a backpack so it's nice to unsnap it and just drop it in my bag. Maybe a nice journal and pen for note-taking?
got these dice tray mats and i have used them so much. i can play catan and roll its dice without worrying about getting marks on my table. i can play azul and have this to collect all scored tiles during the play. its cheap and very versatile.

Another good gift could be to get some accessories for his favorite games.
Foldable or stackable
Have these ones now but the felt bubbles up after a while resulting in cocked dice which sucks. Anything that prevents cocked dice is a plus so would avoid shallowly sloping sides.
Could also stamp something cool like a d20 or dragons head or something in the middle or on the backs? Might get pricey on your end tho idk, never messed with that stuff.
Dice trays are always nice too, and may have been what he meant when he said ‘mat’. Some are super cheap up to more fancy ones - I’d go for one with his favourite colour! Couple of examples below
Cheap foldable - https://www.amazon.com/Rolling-Storage-Folding-Leather-High-Class/dp/B07MYQZG4M
Fancier wooden- https://www.amazon.com/Forged-Dice-Co-Reversible-Removable/dp/B07JQ9Q896
I have this. It fits in my binder with my character sheets and works great at protecting other peoples tables when I play.
You can get a foldable felt box from most places that sell dice. I have one and it will protect them completely and provide a nice rolling area for all your dice (something like this https://www.amazon.com/Rolling-Storage-Folding-Leather-High-Class/dp/B07MYQZG4M) you can get them in a square or shapes like this
We use these inexpensive hexagonal dice trays that measure about 8.5" across with sides that are about 1.5" tall. Never had a problem with any dice flopping out aside from the rare occasional bounce when rolling a lot at once.
Technique wise, just a "shake, shake, drop" from the hand unless it's a load of dice, then it's a cup pour.
Back in college I played D&D with a guy that threw dice like he was playing Craps in Vegas, often messing up the table. I credit his savagery with my dice etiquette 20 years later.
The trays would be my #1 suggestion. Boardgamegeekstore.com has some really good ones that come with lids and can easily stack.
If you play a lot of games that contain some dice rolling them you can get some collapsible dice trays. There's a 6 pack for $16.
A neoprene mat is a good choice, as well. But, prices will vary, depending on the size.
Well, im not some hotshot video dude. However, I want something thats pleasing to the eyes. Those bowls you shown me earlier would be beautiful but home depot sells them high price here. I found a 6 pack for 15 bucks on Amazon. They're colorful and I think it'll work. I also wanted to take the time in case someone else may have seen this post and thought the same about wanting something to make the experience of board gaming to the next level. I will show pictures, if I can, I dont really use reddit much. Edit: I just learned how to post this is fun
I’m hoping that sharing these dice trays will help. After using several of the rectangle ones for gaming, including with KoT, I can highly recommend. One of these square-sized ones will fit laying flat in the box. There may be some lid lift depending on what organization solution you go with.
I also have the Broken Token insert for KoT. I waited a while to get it, even using my own homemade foam core insert for a while. Happy I finally bit! I store all the expansions along with King of New York and some upgraded components/bits. Although no promo monsters and only the power-up cards for KoT, not KoNY.
I got one of these, and one of the hex shaped, at the Diehard Dice booth at a con last year. There were a number of vendors selling nearly identical folding trays. The Diehard trays have their logo embossed inside the tray, and their logo with their name on the backside.
