We have this one at all the grandparents houses. You can easily add to it (and share to multiple frames at once)
I have the Pixoo as well! There is the new kickstarter for the new version, but you can still get the old version on amazon for under $50

We got this Nixplay (currently on sale!). We haven’t unboxed / used them yet but the features seemed best for what we were looking for and should be totally hands-off for them once set up.
This is the one we like, but there are a bunch of different brands, styles, and sizes:
Amazon? Like any retailer that sells home electronics probably has something like this... Here is the best seller item for searching "digital photo frame" on Amazon, is this kind of thing what you are looking for?
I haven’t heard the ad, but I got a Nixplay frame for my grandma. I have the app on my phone and can add pictures from anywhere, even turn the frame on or off. I gave access to her kids and her sibling too. It’s been great.

It is a Divoom Pixoo max display:

They're fun. It connects to your phone via bluetooth to upload the various pixel art. It can also show phone notifications, and stuff like that. I just use it for the fun rotating art.
That's a Divoom Pixoo Max display. It connects via bluetooth to my phone to create and update images. It can be a little fiddly, but is super fun.

There is an echo show that is flat and is meant to mount on walls. Could be too big to mount on the door, but maybe you can mount on the wall that is close to the door?

It's called the Divoom Pixoo. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HHXWN3C?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
I also have the smaller, robot-looking one that's called the Divoom Ditoo Retro. That one has a speaker but they both basically do the same thing.
It's the Divroom Pixoo-Max, it does a lot of other cool things if you're looking into it. And a 64 pixel option as well.

It’s awesome. Hundreds of pictures available plus you can draw one yourself if your skilled.
To be honest I'm considering running a line up the wall in my kitchen and getting one of the 16" Echo Show's to replace that extra manual copy.
Would also be nice playing Pandora while cooking, so it's not just a $250 wall calendar ... it has a radio too! Damn it... this is why I don't have one already; I can't seem to sell the idea to the Misses.
It’s one of these. It’s fun to watch.

They are pretty awesome. 32 x 32 pixel. Hundreds of pictures to choose from. Divoom Pixoo Max.
I was looking into the Brilliant solution but like you said it's too pricey. Ran into an altenative solution, looks like Amazon recently released device dashboard mode for Fire tablets/tv's and also an Echo device for the wall at a reasonable price. It's a bit large imo - wish it was borderless and not as thick. Tempted to pick one up though. Whatcha think?
I've gotten my parents a Nixplay frame a few years ago. It uses a cloud-based album that allows multiple people (family members) to add to it over the internet and it will also continue to cycle through the photos while offline.

Neat. I actually prefer having a physical aux out vs bluetooth. Yes the show # is the size of the screen. So far there's the Show 5, Show 8, and Show 10. They're actually coming out with a 1080p monitor sized wall mountable Show 15 pretty soon. https://www.amazon.com/introducing-echo-show-15-smart-display-with-alexa/dp/B08MQLDFF6/
A digital photo frame that can be updated via email. Pre-load a bunch of photos on it and give the address to other family members so that they can also send photos to it.
This one from Nixplay is my go-to for family members/old people. It's reasonably cheap and just works really well. Now whenever anybody in my family has a new photo they want to share, they just tap "share" and "mail" and send it to an address that spreads it to every "family frame" in a bunch of different houses, my parents, one, my brother's, my aunt's, etc.
The Amazon rainforest and you can chose or make whatever picture or animation you want.
Yea, pics emailed to it are added to the gallery and that it cycles through. I think there's little notification pop-ups that allow them to quickly view the new pics.
I got the Skylight 10" frame. The reviews looked good an my (semi-tech-illiterate) mom was able to set it up and add photos to it herself! I haven't handled it myself, though, but mama seems pleased. It's touch screen and (allegedly) simple to remove photos from the gallery once/if they get tired of some.

Guess it was removed but for sale still:
