I'm sorry that happened OP, glad cat is doing better.
Chicken flavor toothpaste has been our flavor of choice. Petrodex Enzymatic Toothpaste Dog Poultry Flavor, 6.2 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00025K0R6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_uvuPBbY5TX18C
I use this- I don't know if it's the top quality, but I brush my dogs' teeth nightly after dinner. My 13 year old never had any tooth issues, and my 7 year old has never required a tooth cleaning recommendation from the vet. Her teeth are pearly white! My 13 month old is finally getting it and no longer chomping on the brush as I use it. They absolutely love the taste!! I let the pup have a lick before I brush which keeps him distracted. I've read it's only required to brush the outside, so I load the brush, brush the outside of one side, then load and do the other side- 20 stokes each side. Congrats on the milestones with the puppy!! This way shouldn't require extra treats.

I use this toothpaste: https://www.amazon.com/Virbac-Enzymatic-Toothpaste-Dogs-Poultry/dp/B07BYVNNZG/ref=sxts_rp_s_a_1_0?content-id=amzn1.sym.fcbf2b35-b342-496e-87b6-d95b51fd1abd%3Aamzn1.sym.fcbf2b35-b342-496e-87b6-d95b51fd1abd&crid=2IQGU6HCIX1TJ&cv_ct_cx=enzyma... and my dog loves the flavor. Before I really started brushing his teeth, I’d get some of the toothpaste deep into the bristles and just let him chew on the bristles. I also have a toothbrush with more rubber-ish bristles that he does the same with. It’s a good way for them to just get used to the texture before you really start scrubbing.
Try these out too, I swear by this after trying multiple methods and brands:
I found that finger "brushes" are more effective than an actual toothbrush, simple because you can get all surfaces more easily if pup likes to wiggle around, and you won't end up jabbing them in the back of the mouth with the top of the toothbrush. The cloth ones are really nice since they're more effective at grabbing plaque than silicone, and they are easy to wash with some hot water and soap, and then air dry. Just a heads up that those finger brushes in particular might be hard to get on large fingers; I have skinny fingers and I still find them a bit tight. I assume they make different sizes, so you might need to shop around.
I really like that brand of toothpaste too, my boy never has "doggy breath", and his teeth are sparkling white! He seems to really like the flavor too, even more than ones that are advertised as food-flavored. Plus it's a clear gel so it doesn't leave any weird residue, and doesn't foam at all, but still cleans effectively. I think I've gone through about 5 or 6 tubes of the stuff, and I'm really happy with how well it works.
Please do not (ever ever ever) use human toothpaste or baking soda or baking powder as part of your pet’s oral hygiene. I know you said you don’t use or wouldn’t use, but it bears repeating: please do not.
I can’t/shouldn’t make specific recommendations for your pet since I am not your animal’s vet, but I use an enzymatic toothpaste for my dogs and a “finger” toothbrush. They love the poultry flavor.
Toothpaste: https://www.amazon.com/Virbac-Control-Enzymatic-Toothpaste-Poultry/dp/B00RZDXA7K/
“Finger” toothbrush: https://www.amazon.com/Jasper-Toothbrush-Ergonomic-Surround-Bristles/dp/B098PF4NPQ/
Also, as a general care note, please don’t use human toothbrushes on your pets. It’s much too easy to over brush and damage the animal’s gums. Use a “finger” toothbrush or forgo a toothbrush entirely and just use your finger (you can simply spread an enzymatic toothpaste on its teeth with your finger and the enzymes go to work).
Lastly, the main thing you can do is to make sure your pet doesn’t eat terrible food high in carbs and sugar. Carbs and sugar cause tarter, which starts tooth decay. A good diet is the foundation for all the rest.
You have to scruff your ferret. You'll need a full hand scruff. Keep them comfortable against your body while you scruff them. You don't want to just pick them up by the scruff, it hurts. Then you'll have to gently brush their teeth. You may have to start with a qtip to get them used to it or even just use a qtip. You may have to start with your finger. Just get them used to you scruffing them and gently rubbing their teeth. You don't have to use a ton of toothpaste. You just want to start getting them used to it. But you will want to wait till after the dental surgery so you don't hurt the ferret. The vet will tell you how long to wait before you start brushing. It may take a bit to heal. You should get any other ferrets checked out to, to see if they need any major cleaning before starting.
I brush my dogs' teeth with a brush, but my puppy is an avid chewer so he has a couple of Nylabones that help to keep his teeth clean between brushings.
If you get a toothpaste that tastes yummy (I use Virbac poultry flavor) they don't mind it too much. The nice thing about Virbac is that it's an enzymatic cleaner as well, so if you don't do a super good job brushing, it still helps get their teeth clean. According to ALL of my dogs (and my cats) it's super yummy and they'll argue over whose turn it is to get their teeth brushed.
Do you regularly brush their teeth? While my puppy doesn't have tartar, the Amazon reviews for the brand of toothpaste she uses has a lot of reviews and photos of dogs whose tartar got a lot better with this particular toothpaste. Maybe give this a go.
Cat toothpaste like Virbac C.E.T. Enzymatic Toothpaste, Tartar Control, Seafood Flavor, 2.5 oz https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B004ULYYU2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_D8HY8YWW40DRRE9FQQA0 I get ours from the vet, lasts long time.

I have been using a child size human toothbrush for over a year. It’s great! It’s small, so it really works for her mouth, and the handle is short too, which is nice; it’s actually made to brush teeth, and since I have been handling a toothbrush for myself since I was little, it’s actually easier for me to use that those fingertip brushes or doggy toothbrushes with longer handles. I also use this toothpaste for most of our teeth brushing adventurer, and she likes it a lot better, so she actually asks to have her teeth brushed! (And so does the cat actually! It’s great stuff). My vet actually recommended after I had already been using it. Finally, you can use a calendula mother tincture diluted 1:3 with water as a “rinse” to help keep buildup at bay. I have used it myself, and really like it. On a side note: there was a recent study on brushing teeth for dogs that shows that daily brushing is much more effective than weekly bushing… kind of a “duh!!!” Moment, but I figured I’d share. Oh hope that helps!
I second what ReasonablyPositive said. I’d add that there’s seaweed products that can help reduce buildup, but brushing is a must. I use the virbac CET enzymatic toothpaste (Amazon link) and my lady really loves it.. and so does the cat 😂 it made a huge difference when i switched to it, just in terms of my dog wanting to get her teeth brushed vs dreading it!
First-time dog owner? Congrats! Take puppy classes. They are to train you, not so much your dog. Sams aren't the easiest for a first-time dog, but keep at it and keep learning.
We use dental chews or like overtime kinda like if we have food in our teeth it just kinda gets eaten. It was hard not gonna lie. She really likes the taste of the tooth paste so you just have to give a lot of treats. Which is kinda counter intuitive since your trying to clean their teeth lol. I got her to sit and let her lick the toothpaste a bit and give her a treat. Then worked my way to touching the tooth brush to a tooth and treating her. Then moving it in her mouth and bit and treating her. And just going further and further. Not gonna lie it’s a process but after that she kinda enjoys it except sometimes she tries to escape if she doesn’t wanna get her teeth brushed but most of the time she’ll let me lol we use this toothbrush/paste.
