Yup! I cant stress how helpful it’s been to include my dog in my vehicle prep too. An extra leash, collar, water bowl, jug of water, bag of biscuits, and dog jacket can be a saver if you forget something or find a loose dog (safety first, beware of unknown dogs and all that).
Carrying an extra flea/tick prescription in my BOB that I rotate out has been a good wake up for just in case. This is also a good time to refresh any stored pet food. I use freeze dried meats and rotate the bin out when I change the flea/tick medicine out (every 6months). My dog loves the freeze dried treats and in an emergency freeze dried meats are good, lightweight protein calories for animals.
Biggest, laziest tip: When you get new shots from the vet, ask them to email you a copy of your pets entire vaccine records and print a copy. Stash those wherever you like and the email copy is easy to retrieve electronically. This saved me recently when my dog’s daycare lost her vaccine records.
We have a really aggressive chewer puppy and these things have been amazing! I hate the smell of bully sticks so these occupy his time much longer and smell like smoked gouda!
I second the Yak chews. My puppy absolutely loves them and will chew them for hours. He hasn't even finished the first piece we gave him and that was at least a week ago. They are pretty expensive but in my opinion, totally worth it. They have different sizes depending on your dogs weight.
I found them at my local dog store but they are on amazon as well. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004GT6J0Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_32MEybJD2NCN6)
There are low calorie treats designed for training, so your dog isn't getting too many calories. I get these ones http://www.cloudstar.com/product/chewy-tricky-trainers-dog-treats/ They are tiny but strong smelling. My dog loves them. I would make sure that your dog likes the treat and then you can get a pretty good deal buying 2-packs from Amazon, or somewhere discounted.
The yak chews have also been my savior with teething. I got my rescue at 14 weeks and now he is 6 months and he still works on the yak chews for some time every day. He's previous foster gave me the yak chew tip, which was the best tip ever, since I didn't know about them.
If you read about chewy things (elk antler, bully sticks, etc.), they all have some drawback. The main thing people mention with the yak cheese is that there is a lot of sodium. I decided that I could live with that -- provide access to water. This is what they are https://www.amazon.com/Himalayan-Dog-Chew-Large-3-3/dp/B001J9SUHG. Same suggestion.. buy one and see if your puppy loves it. Then you can buy discounted three packs and get better prices.
My puppy definitely wanted to nip and chew on my hands for a while. It was annoying and it hurt, especially with the super-sharp puppy teeth. That behavior has already stopped.
Are you looking for something totally non-consumable (like a plastic or rubber chew toy) or just something that doesn't add too much to the diet?
We've had a lot of success with long-lasting pressed dairy chews like yak milk "bones" you can find at Petco and similar. When ours was a puppy she also loved lamb and pig ears which are cheap there too -- now we buy bulk packs of cow knee caps (feels weird to just have literal knee caps lying around our house but they keep her busy, I just don't know if they're recommended for puppies).
Our dog also consistently loves these 'gorilla' chews made from manufactured wood (https://www.amazon.com/Ware-089655-Gorilla-Natural-1Piece/dp/B017D9F70I) -- she loves chewing sticks and these are essentially wood, but some sort of texture that doesn't splinter. They get gnawed down verrrryyy slowly so no mess, and if any of this "wood" is ingested it's a miniscule amount at a time and totally safe. She goes back to those over and over and we still have the ones we bought her almost a year ago!
It's yak cheese. I use these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071NSY33S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
There is a lot of variance in the toughness of each individual piece. Some of them take days or weeks for my corgi to finish. Others he can go through in one sitting. You need to monitor if you're worried about how many calories your corgi gets.
You can purchase freeze dried liver through Amazon or petco. Amazon is cheaper. It comes in a tub and it's what Athenas trainer uses. I make the dehydrated chicken using chicken breast slices in my dehydrator. I like both of these treats the most because I know there aren't any funky ingredients and because Athena isn't treat motivated by most of the stuff in stores. I've had previous dogs before and they were not this picky. Not sure if this is a German shepherd thing or if it's because Athena is a butt. The dehydrated chicken is tasty to me and the cats too. I've never tried her liver treats though. this is the brand I buy
Athena is like your dog, a bit more toy driven than food driven but it's easier to bring treats in public for us.
It's an actual cake mix for dogs! I got the peanut butter flavored one and instead of using the frosting that came with it, I used regular peanut butter. Last year I made "pupcakes" from scratch with this recipe which I'm sure would work for a cake, too!
Here is the link for the one we got.
It’s going to take time for any dog to get the food out, even if they are super smart.
We also use yak cheese to keep her entertained.. Especially when we have company as she tends to get a bit stressed. I won’t let her have it unattended though because sometimes pieces break off.
I'm not sure for small breeds since I have a medium/large breed pup, but if he loves wood, the gorilla wood chews have been a hit in my house. They sell them in smaller sizes for smaller dogs, they're not too hard and they last quite a while. They don't splinter, but you do have to monitor as the wood shavings will get everywhere lol and just to make sure he doesn't try to eat any of the larger chunks that fall off.

I just sprang for this big ol tub of freeze dried beef liver. Much cheaper than usual, and a good quality single ingredient treat that the pup loves. It also looks like Chewy is price matching some deals, for those who don't want to shop Amazon.
That sounds like the cheese sticks they make for dogs out of yak milk. They are called Himalayan Dog Chews. My dog loves them.
These work well for my dog and they are extremely hard and don't upset her stomach. And its cheese!

they last for ages. The wood sort of crumbles so they don't splinter at all.
ACDs will explore their new home in depth whether you like it or not. I’m sure anyone on here can agree that if you follow your dog around saying “NO” to every single thing, you will wind up frustrated and he will chew increasingly valuable things with a grin on his face. Let him get his excitement out and save the commands for the crucial stuff. My pittie really likes yak cheese chews like these and they last awhile for him when other things didn't. After they work on them and they get too small, you can microwave them and they turn into a crunchy treat. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B071NSY33S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
Try Himalayan dog chews. You can get them on Amazon and I’ve seen them at petsmart. They come in soft - hard so you can choose what works best for your dog.
I was all set to buy them, when I read the reviews and found a number that said the meat comes from China and that their own dogs had issues after eating them.
I don't know how much of that is true, but all things being equal, I'd prefer to err on the side of caution.
That said, I did find yak cheese chews that are really well rated and have no dire warnings from folks in the comments, so I'm gonna try these first. But I'll keep Pork Chomps in mind — they do still have a few thousand positive reviews after all.
there are gorilla wood chews (https://www.amazon.com/Ware-089655-Gorilla-Natural-1Piece/dp/B017D9F70I/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=gorilla+wood+chew&qid=1613941652&sr=8-1) if he likes pinecones (i have not tried them, they're just wood). antlers are another suggestion, the marrow may have protein, but you can get a whole antler so they can't really get to the marrow inside.
Are benebones ok? Our pup has those and she doesn't really ingest them, she's been working on the same two from the puppy starter pack since we got her. The soft nylabone she destroyed but maybe the benebones are ok?
Have you tried these yak milk cheese chews?
For a food chew, they're hard and last a long time. Come in a variety of sizes if you need one bigger than this.
I got these and I've bought 20+ dog toys / chews in the last 2 months. This product is the single most best product that saved my dog from killing me and ripping my flesh to shreds. He loves these things and they don't break, their outer coating just leaves. One of the most popular products on amazon. Love it.
Looks like you can find them at all the major stores. Amazon even has them. The TJ ones come in different packaging.

Not really a toy, so I don't know if this counts, but I love the videos and pictures of dogs in front of a cake with a hat on
When I had my dog he would constantly chew up the baseboards or anything wood and he loves sticks. I was at one of the local pet stores in my area and saw these wood chew blocks and picked one up and he loves it, the only down side is little pieces from him chewing would stick to the carpet but it came up easy with the vacuum.

Carpet. From BJs wholesale club. Doubt I can find a link to that..unless you mean the small brown thing to his right. It’s a Himalayan dog chew
Along with the recommendations of blocking off his access with gates or sprays (sometimes they work and sometimes they don't), I would recommend a wood chew to see if he just really likes the texture of wood. We bought one for our dog when we moved to a townhouse from a house that had a lot of sticks in the backyard and he loved it.
This is the one we have: https://www.amazon.com/089655-Gorilla-Natural-Large-1Piece/dp/B017D9F70I/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1517520880&sr=8-5&keywords=wood+dog+chew
It's really hefty and just kind of shaves off because it's a soft wood. Most dogs who've visited us have chewed on it, and it's still surviving a year and a half later!
