Consider mounting a Ring doorbell or equivalent above your peep hole. They're battery powered, can serve as a doorbell and will store video off site for whoever comes near your door. Barring you being able to tape it there, there's lots of peep-hole mountable cameras that use SD cards.
Replace the hinge and strike plate screws in there with 3" wood screws. Your landlord will never know the difference and it makes a meaningful difference in a break in.
Consider ordering an extended strike plate from Door Devil, Armor Concepts, etc. if you have the gap in the door to support one and your landlord's ok. It will make a big difference in people trying to break in.
I'm guessing you have a 16vac transformer that's hardwired to power (usually they are in the basement mounted to a junction box). Find that, grab a 16vac plug in transformer like this https://www.amazon.com/Transformer-transformer-Compatible-Including-Honeywell/dp/B088PN111N/ref=mp_s_a_1_28?crid=9V1QMXOW0LS&dchild=1&keywords=16vac+transformer&qid=1631999144&sprefix=16vac+transformer&sr=8-28
And wire it to that, you can then plug into a ups.
When this issue came up with my sub, I felt that in the heat of the moment, especially if we have music playing, something like dropped keys or clicking fingers could be missed. Or some other circumstance prevents a tap out / dropping an object, like when she's in a straitjacket and being facefucked... so I purchased a wireless doorbell from Amazon. It works great.
My comments are based on what I have connected to zwave stick on HomeSeer. I have Hue hub, it is only connected to a handful of lights but HomeSeer is able to control them just fine.
I have had this Ecolink one in use since 2014. It is on the computer closet door that turns on/off a plug that powers some LED lights. I have not replaced the batteries on these yet. The newer version, I just installed on pantry door a couple of months back.
I purchased a couple of the Aeotec ones to attach to the washer and dryer and they were problematic to get associated to my Aeotec usb stick attached to HomeSeer. I think I had to throw one out and purchase another. They have worked fine since, but the initial pairing/unpairing/retry with proper child device creation took an hour or two to get it setup properly.
What about something more rudimentary like a flashing doorbell? Your mom could use the button and the light would flash in your room.

So far looking well.

If you google "ring doorbell fps" you'll find majority of different smart home blogs talking about 30fps. And then you have this press release mentioning it and the Ring's Amazon listing.
Though it looks like it's just the original Ring is 30fps, whereas the Ring 2 and Pro are 15. My bad.
I'm just wondering then why people with the original Ring on this thread are still reporting 15fps? So confusing. Sorry, just trying to figure things out before buying one.

You’ll probably need something, depending on the hole size and if you can get rid of that brown shit. Something like this could help: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CYRS8KF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_toAOBbME7J67P
If it covers everything you don’t want to see, I personally would seal it with a white caulk or something to make it look clean on the stone. Or just leave the gaps if it’s way too bumpy.
Curious OP...my 1st gen is installed over a faceplate (similar to THIS)...is the size/shape of the 2nd gen comparable where you think it would still fit, or no? I'm assuming no.
Awesome. This is all super foreign to me but I am game to figure it out. Could you guide me through what wires go where from the transformer to the power supply and then where the motion sensors specifcially tie into? From there I assume wires will go to the retrofit kit? Do you have the all motion sensors going to zone or separate zones? Any issues with heat etc?
I'm planning on buying this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B088PN111N/ref=sw\_img\_1?smid=A2SLNSCOB1BM4C&psc=1
Here’s the doorbell I have. I use one of the holders for mini hand sanitizers to attach it to my lanyard.

I bought this one. I had to cut it out to unblock the motion sensor, so it isn’t ideal. If you’re not interested in motion alerts, it works perfectly.
If anything, look at any doorbell mounts and scroll down to the questions and answers section. Search for the keyword, “Eufy” and someone may have asked if the mount is compatible with Eufy doorbells.
> And is it really security if it can be defeated by simply un-plugging a transformer?.... And security lighting that can be disabled by a 12 year old flipping the breaker with a hair dryer?
Properly installed transformers are screwed into the receptacle plate. Like this one can be so you can't 'just' unplug it.
But you do understand that if you have a dedicated circuit for your cameras and lights that it's even easier to disable without you being aware by flipping a single switch... right?
If you had said "I think the wall warts are ugly and poorly placed and interfere with my furniture"-- those are all good enough reasons for wanting them hard wired somewhere. Or at least wired into a receptacle that isn't somewhere awful but your other reasons are a little specious.
I typed exactly what I put in quotes in Google this was the third result

>He has followed me from work while flashing his lights at me, then one night when I had someone walk me to my home they tried to “follow” him (that someone was taking a sidewalk next to a main road while the borderline stalker would drive behind the apartment complex wall; almost like he was tracking his whereabouts without leaving his own place of where he lived if that makes sense), and now I am staying at said person’s place. I check on my cats every day and then towards the afternoon I drive to his place, but now the creep turned on his car while in his apartment like he was watching me and waiting for me to leave whilst also threatening me. I called the cops on him a few times in the span of a week; their advice is to set up cameras and take gun lessons so I can gather more evidence).
You can get a mount that slides onto the door and the camera goes inside check this one out for instance https://www.amazon.com/COOLWUFAN-Anti-Theft-Video-Doorbell-Installation/dp/B08TR8C1LL/ref=sr\_1\_11?crid=13PCGH4NTHJIN&keywords=ring+doorbell+mount&qid=1642734300&sprefix=ring+doorbell+mount%2Caps%2C233&sr=8-11
I posted this on another comment but when I was shopping for video doorbells I specifically bought one that does not need a subscription to operate. Eufy, had this model for over a year, no problems and works great!

Report the stolen mail to USPS.
If your door faces the common area, get a Ring doorbell and a non-permanent holder that slides onto you door like this one (there are tons of similar ones, get the least expensive one).
I’ve seen wireless doorbells. You plug the chime part into an outlet and there’s a button, usually battery powered. You could use double-sided tape to affix the button to just about anything. Ring the doorbell to summon you. No vision needed, only one button.
Something like this. (Not endorsing this specific one, just to show what I mean.)
I ended up using this backplate I got from Amazon. Worked well but I did have to use a wood shim or two to mount the plate as the holes left by the ring doorbell elite didn't line up exactly for the Nest.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CYRS8KF/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_2K1W8YWD07WA2SCS571Z
I have something in between. The wiring was shot on my old one so I bought a wireless "dumb" doorbell. It doesn't have a camera but it looks "smart" so I've not had any porch pirates in an area where thy are common.
I ordered this and tested it out in the woods and it was loud enough and the transmitter was far enough away to make it interesting. I never actually put it out, and completely forgot I had it, so thanks for the remind! My fear is that someone will simply walk off with the stuff way before the battery goes or rust takes over. I think I will put it in a location that requires a bit of a hike, and I will treat it like a trackable: once it is out, kiss it goodbye and hope some people get some fun out of it before it goes missing. I know, I'm jaded.
Would be nice if this is possible.. You can also have it work with one of those Honeywell wireless doorbell chimes.. Is how my setup is. Doorbell is touched it rings the wireless doorbell chime.
I was actually thinking something more like this. It seems like the peephole mounted bundle still attaches to the outside of the door? I can't imagine that would be very difficult to steal.
When I still worked in the cube farm I put a light up doorbell meant for those with hearing difficulties on my desk. The button got a magnet stuck to the back and was put up on the cube wall behind me with a sign saying push for attention. worked marvelously and everyone used it especially after the time I almost reactively punched somebody (and did smash them in the gut with my chair) because they thought it would be funny to walk up and smack me on the back of the head to get my attention.
Try the police first.
Save every text message.
Invest in personal security - pepper spray, a knife (these arent a guarantee of personal safety, but it's something) keep it on you at all times..
Get a doorbell camera! I included a link below to a device that can be mounted on apartment doors without screws.
Consider using cameras in your apartment as well.
Secretly use your phone to record in-person encounters as well.
I bought the wired Ring Doorbell Pro 2 along with the updated new plug in adapter. I didn’t have an existing doorbell so I ordered this product on Amazon. Coolwufan Anti-theft Doorbell I mounted my wired video doorbell inside the casing then attached it on my front door. No drilling or screwing any existing structures. I fed the wiring along the back of the casing, door, and inside the nearest indoor outlet. Works like a charm. Covered the wires with white tape.

no clue about your specifics but Honeywell Home Wired to Wireless Doorbell Adapter Converter for Series 3, 5, 9 works well with video doorbells in general. In addition to the above, I have two doorbell buttons going to two chimes and they all work together well.

At Amazon the Ring 1 is $99 and the Ring 2 is $199.... I don't see 2x the value in the Ring 2 over the 1. In fact, the Ring 1 has a wider angle lens.
https://www.amazon.com/Ring-Wi-Fi-Enabled-Doorbell-Nickel/dp/B00N2ZDXW2
It's a wireless doorbell. The base unit would be plugged into an outlet somewhere. Not really a "smart" doorbell. They probably took the rest of the doorbell with them not thinking about it or it got thrown away.
Here's one on Amazon for $15.99 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076X3HRRF
> A common reason I hear is that the US being more rural (which is not true as both of my country are more rural). that just seems absurd. So what are then some reasons for this prevelant behaviour in the US?
It has nothing to do with being more rural.
"Porch pirates" generally are operating in urban centers or suburban areas where the population density is higher. (Like "Frankfurt", not "Triberg im Schwarzwald.")
And I suspect there hasn't been a rise in these cases. Instead, what we've seen is a rise in doorbell cameras (like Amazon Ring) recording these activities. Plus, a single theft in a country of 327 million with video will definitely make the national news, making it seem like this is happening everywhere, rather than is something happening to one poor schlub somewhere in (rather densely populated) Los Angeles.
Check out Eufy doorbell cams they don't have monthly fees which add up quickly and it's highly rated.
While I think that the black ones look better, there isn't a lot of contrast between the frame and the button; I think that having high contrast makes it easier for the dog to see.
Hardwired doorbells are a bitch! Get a battery powered unit (the “bell” plugs in2 an outlet) like this...
Wireless Door Bell, AVANTEK Mini Waterpoof Doorbell Chime Operating at 1000 Feet with 52 Melodies, 5 Volume Levels & LED Flash https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076X3HRRF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_5J8tCb4X59XCK
If you are just starting out with these kinds of project you may be better off looking for something close to what you want and modifying it. For example, this wireless doorbell on Amazon could be modified to fit in the helmet. get two of them and make one for warn and one for penalties.
I would guess you would need to pull the circuit board, extend the battery pack wires to a safe location (maybe a pocket). You might just be able to get an armband jogging holder for a phone and put the receivers on each arm with the left for warning and the right for a penalty for example. I know roller derby can be rough so it would need to be solidly attached.
I just found a promising looking product on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CYRS8KF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Just ordered this and a Hello online, will post pictures after it's done!
Someone linked this: https://www.amazon.ca/SadoTech-Wireless-Doorbell-Operating-Batteries/dp/B00FR4YQYK/
But that's not going to work for OP, unless they're willing to run an extension cord to the garden / always remember to plug it in wherever they move (and hope that their patient doesn't ring while they're moving locations/don't have it plugged in).
The problem with any app is that it's always going to be prone to network connectivity on both ends or glitchiness on the devices or a dead battery or the person's ability to hit the app (it's amazing how often we lose our phones; they end up in the oddest places).
The wireless (door)bell system really is basically foolproof. You can get multiple receivers and if you're out in the garden you could just plug one in an outdoor socket while you are out there. I bought this one I think and it works great. They have other combos with more receivers and buttons if you wanted a receiver all over the house or buttons in multiple rooms. They can be set pretty loud as well.
I looked everywhere for an app like you are doing but there was nothing that was reliable enough in my view.
There's something about a simple button that has no purpose other than to call for assistance that works very well.
Beyond that, the only option I found was the emergency monitoring services which was overkill for my situation.
Well, velour pads are supposed to be less isolating than pleather. I guess you could give something like these a shot, at $10 it's worth a try. But don't expect miracles – if they were capable of letting in a lot more sound they'd also change the way the headphones sound, and you may not like that.
Have you considered changing your doorbell with a model for the hearing impaired? You can place the bell unit closer to you, and they also have a light.
Use a relay tied into the compressor contactor to trigger a dry contact sensor, like a Z-wave door sensor?
The relay would separate the high from low voltage sides. Maybe your contactor already has a set of contacts that could be used for the relay?
These have dry contacts that can be used for that type purpose. https://www.amazon.com/Ecolink-Intelligent-Technology-Operated-DWZWAVE2-ECO/dp/B00HPIYJWU
Like this that allows you to connect external wires, so you can connect the original switch to it.
EcoLink Door sensor on Amazon for $29 works great. You add it as a Z-Wave sensor and it works fast and consistently.
Ecolink Intelligent Technology Z-Wave Door & Window Sensor, White & Brown (DWZWAVE2-ECO) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HPIYJWU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ufrnyb2JP9NZN
I would test the 2 wires when the door is closed and see if you get continuity, and when the door is open if it is broken. You can use these Ecolink, or Schlage ones that have a contact terminal in them and have Z-wave door sensors. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HPIYJWU

2 weeks ago we got the SadoTech model C (best seller in Amazon, excellent reviews and multiple models/configuration to choose from). I secured the transmitter to the wall and it's been working flawlessly since then. I only wish it had some memory to save the ringtone selection and volume if you disconnect the receiver, but other than that works great!
Would have been a deal at 25% off perhaps. The video quality just doesn't seem to be quite on par with the Ring video doorbell. Is the Skybell not able to record yet?
At the same price I feel much happier with the Ring: http://www.amazon.com/Ring-Wi-Fi-Enabled-Video-Doorbell/dp/B00N2ZDXW2
I don't have any automation yet, still reading up. As well as a tilt sensor, you could probably also use a window/door sensor but it definitely looks like the tilt/sensor is easier to install as it is one piece.
