Literally the base of every single meal I eat. Add canned chicken, Rotel, and Valentina hot sauce and you have a Mexican meal. Do tuna, kimchi, and sriracha and you have a Southeast Asian meal.
Both options are a million times better if you already have a spice stash handy. If not, you can buy those premade seasoning packets on Amazon in something like taco or chow mein flavor or something.
Buy better rice. I can't stress this enough. You can seriously taste the difference.
Just try a small bag of premium koshihikari from Amazon or a Japanese grocery store.
Multiple rinses until the water runs clear.
I've bought a rice-made noodle off Amazon that I bought in Costco previously that wasn't being sold at mine after that first time: Organic Brown Rice Ramen (12 Pack Per Bag) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013MOHYRW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_K3Uozb2BYWHXG Edited for grammar
For less messy amazon links you can extract the part after "/dp/" in
and make it:
BEEP BOP

I use these grains On Amazon. They are great and come with good instructions.
1TBSP Active Organic Milk Kefir Grains & Ebook: "Milk Kefir Unleashed" By Thomas Egbert https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007GGRJTG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_mkN5ybS6XM402
I've bought kefir grains from this Amazon seller multiple times. Their grains are fantastic, and the price is more than reasonable. They have a ton of positive feedback as well.
Several people in the kefir sub (including myself) bought grains from THIS SELLER on Amazon. All of us are very happy, too. The grains are reasonably priced with 2,300+ great reviews.
It's worth a shot if you can't find grains locally.
I used a medium grain Nishiki rice with Red Star premier rouge
So I know using a sweet/sticky rice rice would probably make a huge difference, but I am still so surprised at the complete lack of flavor produced here. I was even afraid for a moment that I might of gotten covid lol
Nah, fuck whole foods. That shits expensive. If you can hold out for a few days heres 5 pounds of rice for $5.49 and 4 pounds of black beans for $6.36
This hobby is full of that, reading this is great in one place then hearing the opposite from somewhere else... I started with this bag from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RHXKTO?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf Gave me some great results so I actually just went to a feed store yesterday and got a hugeee 50lb bag of rye seed for 22$. Like its so big I have to keep it in the trunk of my car cause I live in a tiny apartment and am running out of room for all the shit I have now lol. It'll definitely last a while so it was worth driving a little extra distance to find the right place to get it.
I agree with the previous poster. I bought my grains from THIS SELLER on Amazon. They were inexpensive, and others here have purchased from this particular seller as well. (No, I'm not affiliated with them in any way.)
Unless you can somehow find someone locally, you're gonna have no choice but to send away for them. Fortunately, grains are hardy little devils, and they will be fine.
I (and many others in this sub) purchased grains from THIS SELLER on Amazon. They have 3,000+ excellent reviews.

>Glutinous rice, also called sticky rice
Also called sweet rice. This is what I buy, based on what my late sister-in-law, Thai, bought.
I use a big mortar as a pot for water and steam in a bamboo cone with a lid from from another pot.
In addition to sweet desserts, sticky rice is used as an appetizer (rolled into little footballs and dipped) and as a foundation for thick stews.
if you want restaurant quality.. this is what some of them use amazon link
At Sam's...
Long Grain .42/lb ($21 50lbs / $11 25lbs)
Jasmine .68/lb $17 25lbs
Bismati .99/lb $20 20lbs

Amazon of all places had 15lb of Jasmine for .90/lb a few weeks ago.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I330QEQ/r
It's actually .94/lb right now if you have 5+ subscribe and save items.
> I am not reusing "grains" like most people say around here
Uh, you just answered your own question. This (above) is why you're having problems.
> Can someone please tell me how I can keep it good for longer than 3-4 days?
To be honest, I'm surprised I'm surprised it lasted that long.
> This is very frustrating
Then buy some actual grains. Many people here (including myself) got theirs from THIS SELLER on Amazon. They have 6,200+ excellent reviews.
Good luck!
You can just buy this, it's about equally as effective but way cheaper:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004NRHAZO/
/s of course. But seriously, I have no idea why Stamets, as such a well-known person in the field, sells such a trash product.
What kind of kefir are you using? I think the ones in the store are pretty weak. Have you tried growing your own culture? This is the starter that I bought on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Organic-Grains-Unleashed-Thomas-Egbert/dp/B007GGRJTG/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?crid=2J1LH6W4L50KS&keywords=kefir&qid=1656637916&sprefix=kefir%2Caps%2C135&sr=8-11
> it is not possible to keep it alive for longer than a few batches is that true? Where do you access grains in that case?
That is correct. Kefir starter can only be used a handful of times. You cannot make kefir forever using kefir starter. For that, you need grains.
I got my grains from THIS Amazon seller. Their grains are great, and they have 5,000+ excellent reviews.
That's a life skills thing.
Let's say you have $20 for the entire week.... well... $6.73 buys you 5 lbs of rice https://www.amazon.com/Nishiki-Medium-Grain-Rice-Pound/dp/B00852ZN2U/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=rice&qid=1636504881&sr=8-2
That will last you like two weeks. In that time you can get other ingredients and make it even better. It doesn't take long to make. 10-20 minutes and boom done. In the time you're standing in line at Walmart I already have a meal ready.
This is 100% how you are raised. If you've never been taught how to eat cheaply you'll always waste your money cause you don't know any better. We should be teaching people how to cook cheap and easy meals.
Numerous people in this sub (myself included) bought their grains from THIS SELLER on Amazon. They have almost 5,000 excellent reviews, and their grains are top notch. Good luck!
Yeah, but Arkansas grows mostly long grain rice, California grows Calrose, Shirakiku, Koshihikari, etc. An example is below.
Shirakiku Rice, Koshihikari, 15 Pound https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0093ZTUEA
> Also factor in food deserts. .... If you have no transportation, all your benefits will be ate up quick.
Actually I have factored that in. If you are paying $15/week for rice then stop shopping there. It only took me 30 seconds to find rice for $8.56/week online. Food deserts and transportation don't really matter when it can be delivered to your front door for free.
Your local Fred Meyer has rice for $8.64/week. Possibly less. I only checked the 1st page of results.
Have in the past, but not this time. I used a medium grain rice and the texture more closely mimicked that of the fried rice I get at restaurants.
> If I wanted to make a business out of this, I would look to add some value, and also charge just 1 or 2 dollars above shipping
Um, you'd never "make a business out of this" because you obviously know nothing about running a business. In fact, I bet you're a drone who works hard to make somebody else rich (assuming you have a job).
FYI, selling kefir grains is not a lucrative business, and the fact that you think you'd make a "healthy profit margin" proves how naive you really are.
Also, I hate to break the news to you, but the seller that you linked to is selling 1/2 of a teaspoon of kefir grains for $5.90. Let me repeat.....1/2 of a freakin TEASPOON. Now that's raping ppl! On the other hand, this seller on Amazon is selling 1 TABLESPOON of kefir grains for $16.98 (which includes shipping).
*I know you're a little slow, so let me break it down for you: The seller you linked to is selling 0.5 teaspoons of grains for $5.90. And it takes 3 teaspoons to make 1 tablespoon. So if a person wanted to buy 1 tablespoon of grains from your ripoff seller, they'd have to pay $35.40!! ($5.90 x 6 = $35.40)
So YOU are actually the one who's promoting a seller that's "raping ppl"! $35.40?!?! Dumbass LOL!
