That's sounds a lot like having depression too which is a huge beast in and of itself. Deal with that myself too and it's a struggle to just be motivated to really even get out of bed. So I feel for the family friend.
I use Exercise Bands to help me drop weight. It can be done while sitting down comfortably and there are loads of exercise videos on YouTube (and DVDs) that show seated position workouts for folks like him and me.
Might also be wise to try finding other things that also interest him instead of feeling the need to eat to fill in the gaps. I know it's super tempting to just chow down on something, because it's easy and it's something to do that can be done easily for enjoyment.
I have these from Amazon and they work great! I always use the X-Heavy with crab walks, donkey kicks and clams I can definitely feel it! They also come with the little pouch to keep them all together. Only complant, my husband asked why my hands smelt like weed when i got back from the gym... So they do have a smell first time out of the package. https://www.amazon.com/Fit-Simplify-Resistance-Exercise-Instruction/dp/B01AVDVHTI/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1521742140&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=resistance+bands&psc=1
If you are able to purchase them, I'd recommend resistance bands. They're not too expensive (Set on Amazon), and can simulate certain weight lift exercises. And since its bands you're not lugging heavy (and loud)
I don't have issues with my knees collapsing but if science says it will give me a sweet ass I guess I'll do it. Any suggestion on a which bands to get for a 6'2 guy with a very wide stance? They all seem to be 12' at varying thicknesses and these seem to be most popular on amazon.
I would recommend getting some resistance bands (around $10 on amazon) and doing exercises such as glute bridges, frog pumps, kickbacks, clams, squats, etc with them. If you google resistance band glute exercises a lot of examples will come up that will show you how to do them.
Start with the lower weight ones and once you learn the movements and feel your glutes activating then increase the resistance weight!
Edit: I have these myself for about a year and they work fine.
I love it when people plan to succeed!!! That company also sells some pretty good exercise bands on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006NZZH18/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Back when I bought them, I got a free "membership" into their website which had a ton of exercises. I sporadically did them. Mostly I walked.
So, I want you to know that you can PM me any time. I live in +6:00 GMT, so if I am asleep, I will get back with you as soon as I wake up. Us big boned dudes have to stick together.
Lot's of people will tell you good luck. I don't think you need any luck. So I wish you success. Sweet, glorious success.
Fit Simplify Resistance Loop Exercise Bands with Instruction Guide, Carry Bag, EBook and Online Workout Videos, Set of 5 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AVDVHTI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_7ANnBbS0VAAQ9
Bought these on amazon! They work well.
I purchased 2 packs of these from Amazon for mobility and banded lifting and they seemed to be the best deal I could find for a 5 pack of bands with varying resistances. They were just delivered about 20 mins ago so I can give you a followup when I use them tonight.
well for the IT bands, I think strengthening your hips, hamstrings and butt can help a ton. You're seeing a pro already so I'm sure you're already doing things like clamshells but even bodyweight hip bridges/hip thrust variations can help a lot. Same thing with val slide leg curls - you can do these with paper plates on carpet or a towel on hardwood.
What do you think about resistance bands? You can get a really nice set for like 20 bucks that can serve you pretty well and the resistance is very adaptable so you can build some strength without over exerting yourself. Bands are how I kept myself sane and in shape at the height of the pandemic
something like this - https://www.amazon.com/UPOWEX-Resistance-Whatafit-Exercise-Training/dp/B07DWSPQQY/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=resistance+bands&qid=1625323468&sr=8-10
I got a set from Amazon that was like $29 for 5 bands and handles/door stop/ankle straps. I didn't think they were worth it either (or the parallel bar, for that matter) but now I'm 100% convinced. You just can't go wrong, IMO.

Exercise bands are great for muscle workouts, relatively cheap, can be put on any door and there are ton of exercises available online!
I bought these bands from Amazon that let you stick them through various parts of your closed door for lat pull downs, face pulls, leg kick backs, etc.
I also have some adjustable dumbbells I've semi-permanently borrowed from my brother. That really seems enough. I also have a pull up bar that when not being used to air dry laundry, is used for negatives as I'm not able to do real pull ups.
They are great! I have been having knee issues from past sports flare up again and resistance bands allow me to work my glutes and legs without irritating my knee from heavy weights! I really like the Heavy and X-Heavy bands from this set on Amazon. I also love that I can use them if I am at home and I feel like the gym that day was not enough,
I've been a big fan of the Black Mountain bands. They have a few different packages on Amazon.
Black Mountain Products Ultimate Resistance Band Set with Starter Guide https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DGAID78/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_5EVHAb88W2P4Z
I've had them for about 6 months now and they are still in good shape. I don't have a good set up for rows in my home gym so I used them alot of seated rows and for some core work. Pretty happy with then so far!
Let me know if you have any questions.
edit: typos :(
Hey, I saw someone recommending putting a more rigid one of those stretchy exercise resistance bands like from physical therapy up the front legs of the Antilop high chair to create a footrest (apparently it's a lot more ergonomic for baby to have a footrest). And also using an old shower curtain as a splat mat for the floor.
I hate the idea of buying a $25 footrest and a $50 Catchy thingy (that's $75 in accessories for a $20 high chair!!!). So just thought I'd pass those ideas along.
This is the type of resistance band they were using as a footrest, but you could prolly find a few for free from ppl who have been to physical therapy or something:
I really like these:
Bodylastics Resistance Bands Set with Patented Anti-Snap Elastics, Patented Clips, Upgraded Handles, Door Anchor, Legs, Wrist Ankle Straps https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B006NZZH18/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_MAPQWQ978A9TT8000G68
I anchor the red one at the top of a door and just hold the ends in my hands - don’t need the handles as the shape of it makes it slip-free.
3+ times a week for nearly a year and my previously-impinged shoulder seems healthier (but it’s hard to prove) although it’s interesting to me that I’ve never felt the need to progress to a heavier band. But I think that’s just the nature of this exercise and those tiny little rotator cuff muscles.
I have two sets of these with no complaints.
I clip a few together and tie them around the top of my rack to simulate cable flies and then use them for a variety of other accessory work
I got these earlier this year, and the bands are holding up well. May not be enough lbs for you tho unless you wanna connect all the bands together, which isn't ideal

You're a new man! The coffee really helps with the food cravings, I've found. Might I suggest some band resistance workouts at home - since COVID hit and limited my gym activity, they've been a muscle savor. I use these, really impressed by the versatility of them.
Calorie counting will be the most important thing for you. I'd get a kitchen scale before anything else. Check out /r/loseit.
If you're going to do P90X you can substitute in a set of exercise bands for weights. I have these ones from Amazon and they've held up great over the years.
You can buy better/nicer (and way cheaper!) ones on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Fit-Simplify-Resistance-Exercise-Instruction/dp/B01AVDVHTI/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1517002085&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=fitness+bands&psc=1
I felt the OTF ones at my studio and they were super cheap and basically garbage. Makes sense, since they have a ton and will just keep replacing them.
I bought this set for <$10 off amazon but only use the black one, since it's the highest resistance one. I'm a hairy legged dude, so I now trim my legs to prevent the band from messing with my hair. The bands don't rub my skin too terribly so it works out.
I bought dumbbells and while I sit here I work out, as I progress my set has grown. I also have bought a set of resistance bands I use all the time.

You will put on a little fat but mostly muscle, so you'll still look good. You are still very light even for your height.
I like these bands: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IL6A0I6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's a set of bands. Without going to check, I think there's 5 of different weights between 10lbs-40lbs, that total 110lbs. You would just attach more than one to the handles to increase the weight.
It was on Canadian Amazon. Not sure the brand.

Im a 31/m/260(and dropping) and have always struggled with my weight but i am lucky to have a very balanced build so i always kind of look like a weightlifter that just went a little crazy with the donuts.
I have always lifted on and off but in the past few years i have fallen in love with resistance band workouts and using liveexercise.com workout programs because they have programs for all levels and styles of training that are actual live shows with real people that are struggling the same as you.
I know that sounds like an informercial but spend $30-$50 on a set of bodylastics bands from amazon here and try liveexercise for 2 weeks free. The best part is you dont have to think about what to do you just follow a show and DO IT! If you have any other questions feel free to ask im not a salesman i promise
edit: also don't buy the shitty black mountain brand bands i had them and they are junk construction stick with the bodylastics brand i linked
Get some bands with hand grips and a carbiner attachment.
About $50 bucks on Amazon. You can get great initial results with these and a pull up bar and push-ups.
60cm sounds like mini bands. https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=mini+resistance+bands
You probably want to buy something like these, right? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Odoland-Resistance-Bands-Include-Anchor/dp/B01LED8ZVC/ref=mp_s_a_1_19?crid=27NQRDAJNB9VK&keywords=resistance+bands&qid=1671055599&sprefix=resistance+bands%2Caps%2C359&sr=8-19
I bought a resistance band kit that easily fits in my luggage. I can do a full workout in the hotel room..... if I ever get more than min rest.
I use a band exercise kit. They come with different levels of resistance and clip them to the mast and backstay. Not cardio but damned good for arms, legs & core. Whatafit Resistance Bands Set... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DWSPQQY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
