I'm with you buddy, I used to tease my friend for playing, calling him a nerd and a dork, and so on... but once I played I haven't missed a game in 10 years.
There is firstly Leagues, D&D adventure leagues, they are often hosted at conventions or in stores that sell the material, either of those locations regardless of the league should have ideas, information, or social media social groups for which you can find out.
there is also /r/LFG
you might want to grab Dungeons & Dragons Core Rulebook Gift Set
Its cheaper than buying the books individually, cheaper than buying 2 books.
There are also other games, /r/rpg is a place for things that are not just D&D, vampire games, robots, D&D in the future (shadowrun) war-hammer fantasy and 40k...battle tech, exalted, traveller.... many many games. Some might be more or less for you than others.
D&D is the most popular by far, games everywhere, its easier to find groups, get material, use digital resources all kinds of stuff.
you might want to get your own dice too, you can get plastic, metal, rare metal, rare stone dice, all kinds.
You can even play with your friends online, using online group meet -up's
I played D&D first on skype and IRC, There is a thing called D&D beyond but its a bit pricey for not giving physical copies of the material. Roll20 is another (but the owners are assholes) and some others people might know of. I also played starwars edge of empire on google hangouts for a year, it had a dice roller app, and we displayed our digital character sheets as out profile picture.
I actually physically own this map ( as well as many others), and it's from the Lands of Ice and Fire map collection, which predates WOIAF by a year.
I don't own WOIAF, so I can't comment on that. Perhaps it reproduced the maps and made them canon.
I have the leatherbound paperbacks and really like them. The leather covers make it easy to take with me without worrying about them getting damaged, plus the whole set is only a little more than $50 on amazon and I've seen them in bookstores for as low as $35. The only drawback with the paperback set is the small print, so if you have trouble with that then definitely go for the hardcovers.
At end of each book there is a list of all the characters involved in the books, and their brief one-sentence descriptions. I think in the later books the list is like 20~30 pages.
There is an actual atlas of Westeros and The Known World, that was published back in 2012, The Lands of Ice and Fire.
The Wikipedia article about the world's geography is quite extensive and interesting too
Grab this... https://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Essentials-Kit-Boxed/dp/0786966831/ref=sr_1_1?crid=8K0HB3UFPLS&keywords=dnd+essentials&qid=1569887219&sprefix=dnd+ess%2Caps%2C154&sr=8-1 that should cover the basics of what you need to get started.
Also manage your expectations the folks on the show are professional actors so don't expect your friends to roleplay as well or do voices or for you to be able to be like Murph. Just relax and have fun!
If you're going to provide pirated material, at least give people the source so they can purchase it if they'd like to support the creators!
They are from the official Lands of Ice and Fire map book, which you can buy on amazon https://www.amazon.com/Lands-Ice-Fire-Game-Thrones/dp/0345538544
AFAIK, this map is from the media of which we do not speak, as evidenced by the eastern portion which isn’t canon since the release of the TLOIAF maps. The Lands of Ice and Fire is what you’re looking for if you want beautiful and accurate maps.
Here’s a reddit post of the HQ world map from TLOIAF.

I have this map pack and it's fantastic. I have a few of them framed up on the walls, I highly recommend buying them!
If you are patient and not in a rush there’s a single hardcover volume being released in October of this year that’s supposed to include Tolkien’s original illustrations. I think the cover art is quite nice as well. Price isn’t bad either for hardcover.

I highly recommend getting the Essentials Kit. It's generally considered better than the Starter Set and will allow your whole group to play and test out the game for less than the cost of even a single rulebook.
Yeah I have seen these on Amazon, they are really small and chubby but covers look good.
Those LoTR books are gorgeous. I’d love to get a set like that.
edit found them on Amazon. Only $50 Canadian. Not bad.
The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: Deluxe Pocket Boxed Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/0544445783/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_A8EY4CHCMG45A92Q3PNE
I got these for Christmas a couple years back. Used them to read the series for the first time and I absolutely love them. The font is small but manageable.
I had this same set, then had The Hobbit and Fellowship stolen when my car window was smashed and the backpack they were in was taken. Two years I sat frustratingly staring (not the entire time) at an incomplete box set. Just recently I simply had to right this wrong and picked up a new set of them, which has also inspired me to re-read all the way through again.
By the way, this pocket edition set is amazingly fair priced for its quality, look, and feel. And although they are pocket editions, they are extremely readable in my opinion. Highly recommended, $28 bucks on Amazon:

I hope not, I love the movies and I read half the hobbit but then the pandemic made me return the book to my HS so I just bought em
If anyone else is interested this is what I bought and now it’s on sale

It's a really nice edition.
If you like Game of Thrones and maps, you should check out "the Lands of Ice and Fire". It's an official map pack and they look great on walls. Amazon link (just 23,43$ right now)
Great collection btw!
I’m gonna ask a question, hopefully it’s not dumb. I just bought a set on amazon but it was only 5 books. Am I getting the whole story here?

I saw them in the US at Barnes and Noble a few weeks back. Here's the link from the web store, you may be able to find it there if you want to get it in person.
Amazon seems to have it for half the price though, if you can wait.

Happiness is an illusion. As someone who has depression and suicidal ideation, while I can't walk in your shoes, I have walked beside you. For me, read the Illuminatus Trilogy every few months helps me find my zone. Its just one thing among many.
The Dude Abides. That doesn't mean he thrives every day... Always remember, good or bad, this too shall pass

The Essentials Kit is probably the bets way to start. It's less than $15 USD. If you like it, the next thing to get would be the Player's Handbook which runs $25-$50 USD depending on where you get it. You can also purchase it as a PDF for cheaper.
Secret Hitler works kind of like a one night werewolf game.
If you have 5-7 players the game is amazing, but fun at any #.
I had never played dnd before and on a whim bought stuff for it to play with friends.
It feels daunting I agree. But best advice I can give is buy a player handbook, and read.
You can even get starter sets for like 20 dollars. Pick a person to be the dm, and they read everything. Then once you’ve got rules figured out just play a game. You don’t need miniatures, or maps. Although they do boost the immersion.
Here’s a starter set if you’re interested!

This link is good for the fan translations of the third, seventh, and eighth books. You can buy The Last Wish from Amazon to see if you like it.
