I have the older edition of this, which as you can see is pretty old itself. But it's still a good starting point. It's not like campsites change very often.

Traveling in Central America is awesome. It's cheap, the people are friendly, you don't get hassled at all, and it's easy to get around. I love it.
You really need to narrow down what you want to do though. Belize is a great "starter" destination for people new to Central America because English is widely spoken, it's easy to travel in, and it has many different activities.
I would probably avoid El Salvador, but the rest of CA is fine. Nicaragua is probably my favorite country, because it feels incredibly authentic, but there are no Mayan ruins there if that's your thing. But there are beautiful colonial cities, particularly Leon and Grenada.
Otherwise your questions are very general and I would advise that you start with Wikivoyage or a Lonely Planet guide and do some research and then come back with some more specific questions. At the very least buy something like this and read it to help plan your itinerary.
Awesome, I'm studying abroad in Costa Rica in a few weeks and I don't have any literature to settle my racing mind.
studyspanish is great for learning Spanish.
Duolingo is also useful.
If you have any questions of rules and such, I would honestly buy this book
Very nice video. They sound genuinely happy.
Personally not a huge fan of people that live this type of lifestyle and sell books but here it is on Amazon.
Edit: I also recommend watching some of the other videos in their series.
This guy did it like 25 years ago, but I can't seem to find anything recent. I really like the description:
>Ten hours southeast of the Panama Canal, the Pan-American Highway penetrates the jungle, shrivels into a footpath and dies. The highway resurrects in Colombia, another continent. But the land between the two countries is a vast and primitive realm. On a map the two ends of the highway appear as two slivers of life, separated by the unknown. Filling this void is a rugged wilderness known as the Darien Rainforest.
Fuck I really want to go there now. Fuck I'm gonna die
Glad to help! One of my big passions is Cuban music. A good book I recommend is http://www.amazon.co.uk/Waking-Up-Cuba-Stephen-Foehr/dp/1860743463 A guy travels across the island and gives you an insight into the places and the music. Really easy to read! EDIT: OP, do you speak Spanish? I recommend the classic La música en Cuba by Alejo 'Legendary Cuban author' Carpentier. You have to have a very advanced level to read it in Spanish but I'm sure it exists in English.
I self-published a travel guide with a partner right out of college, sort of a trial-by-fire introduction to the profession. But it did solve the whole chicken-and-egg problem where you get assignments based on what you've already done. That got me into writing guidebooks, and articles followed from there.
My advice is always start small (in terms of publications), get any clips (printed pieces) you can, and slowly work your way up to bigger and bigger publications.
And networking is key: ask successful writers out for coffee to pick their brains - most people love talking about what they do and are happy to help beginners. And join groups like the Society for American Travel Writers.
And be aware that it's insanely competitive. That's one reason I do much more science writing now.
