Hmm, I don’t know about that. I’d be concerned about it ruining your mat. Powdered chalk/resin is super easy to swipe off your mat after practice. This is what I use: AURORAE Yoga Non Slip Rosin Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003329SIM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_A1FM7BMD8W7B7XX26GYM?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I actually used heavy ropes on tiles a lot, it depends what types of tiles you have I guess, you could get one of those thicker mats, I use one on grass, works great, for example, it's also great for learning power moves
I bought two of these Best Choice Products 10x4ft 4-Panel Foam Folding Exercise Gym Mat for Gymnastics, Aerobics, Yoga w/Handles https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BR1DTK4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GHnKEbHHTGSK1
I did the amazon prime store card promotion and received $70 off the purchase. So with tax it came out to about $117 for two mats and they delivered it in 4 days! Originally it said it might take two weeks to arrive. Thank you fedex !
I don’t like opening up new credit cards and I might end up canceling this one, but they do offer 5% back on a bunch of purchases and there is no annual fee..
Anyway, I was thinking about trying to make my own mat but unless you’re using just cardboard even a diy mat gets pricey quick. I might look into making or buying a heavy duty cover for these, to use them as a crash pad for bouldering. But I don’t want to mess em up
For me, the solution is two-fold: a natural rubber mat(I prefer Jade because it’s constructed differently; manduka’s are still slippery even after being worn in) and yoga rosin where my hands and feet go in down dog, which is linked below. I almost never slip unless I’ve been practicing for an hour, and even then I just add more rosin to my mat and I’m good to go.

It’s worth investing in a good mat, one made of natural rubber. A Jade mat is very grippy. You can also use this chalk to keep your hands and feet dry if you don’t like the way a towel feels.

It’s great! When you get it, give it a salt scrub to take the manufacturing film off and you’re good to go. If you find it’s still not quite sticky enough, you can use this to help: AURORAE Yoga Non Slip Rosin Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003329SIM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I use this for longer, more intense practices when I know I’ll sweat a lot.
Jade is AWESOME. I’ve tried manduka, Liforme, and Jade, and Jade wins BY FAR. If you want grippy, you want a natural rubber mat(Jade or manduka). A manduka is closed cell so it will still be a little slippery, whereas a Jade is open cell and grips better. I’ve had my Jade for years and it’s doing great. I use it with the yoga resin linked below(same chalk climbers and gymnasts use) and I never slip.

I love Jade mats. I’ve tried Gaiam, Manduka, Liforme, and Jade is the best. It’s supper groovy and if I do start to slip - sweaty from a longer than usual practice or a hot class - then I use the resin linked below. It’s the same stuff gymnasts and rock climbers use to keep their hands dry and grippy. You could just try the resin first if you like the mat.

I’d say a Jade Harmony plus this resin, which absorbs sweat: AURORAE Yoga Non Slip Rosin Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003329SIM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I had a manduka eko, which I’ve seen recommended here, but it was WAY more slippery than the combo above.
Not in my experience. The best things you can do are get a grippy mat(I like Jades; mandukas use a different manufacturing process that make them a little more slippery), and some gymnast/climbers chalk. It absorbs the sweat and is easy to clean. I use this stuff: AURORAE Yoga Non Slip Rosin Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003329SIM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I'd get something more substantial like this rather than interlocking foam mats. Hopefully you can find something similar in the UK. I believe you can find stall mats commonly sold at farm supply stores.
It's pricey, but Manduka is the mat I bought a few years ago and it's been fantastic. Firm, yet soft. Very durable. If you can treat yourself with a manduka you won't regret it!
Thanks
These are the mats (3/4” 2’ x 3’) I purchased from Amazon:

I just ordered on Amazon what is called a knee or hand pad - it's about 1 inch thick and about 10 inches by 24 inches rectangle pad. Very similar to the small dense pads we have at the weight stations. I'm going to try to bring my own and I have room to slide it down in between the tread tower or front between one tread and the next tread. Or maybe lay longwise at the end of my tread. I've seen people put their water bottles that are bigger than the cup holders at the end if their tread on the floor. imo they are better than horse stall mats, which are heavy and smell.i got 2 of these for deadlifts. they are thicc: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AMJLBG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have my single pad setup (including DIY bar) on two of these. They are a bit pricey (I got them on sale), but they do the trick.
Something like this might also work.
If you have room for an extra wide mat, I use this one for yoga and for stretching/strength: 6'x 4' x 8 mm extra wide yoga mat

I have indoors sneakers I only wear on it, or just do strength barefoot. I don't really want to be doing yoga on a mat that I've stood on with my outdoors sneakers. Having the double width to do yoga on is awesome and I'm going to feel very squished going back to a regular sized mat in yoga classes in the studio when we go back someday! Especially for restorative and things, it's so lovely to have all that space available.

How about a treadmill mat! This one folds up (I had a similar one a long time ago) Stamina Fold-to-Fit Folding Equipment Mat (84-Inch by 36-Inch) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0012MEZKG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_qmKEAbCFZDC1Q Edit: not as wide as you’d want but something to consider
It works well and fits Thrasher's x-pen well. He has chewed up the edges a good amount, but it is still functional a year later. May have to get a new one eventually though.
Wrists have been feeling a bit funky lately (longboarding... nuff said) and Im looking to get a brace to take some of the load off while it recovers. Does anyone have any experience with Tiger Paws or the Wrist Widget?
How much did they limit your range of motion? Did it help with your wrist pain?
I had the same problem with my mat and flow too, but one of my instructors suggested using a rosin and that has really helped my slippage. This is the brand I use.
I used to use this one when I was doing hot yoga. It's a compound from trees that is kind of sticky--it's what gymnasts often use to keep grips on things, too.
