Shameless plug, buy a pair of earplugs like this. They are easy to carry, and help dampen the ridiculously loud sounds. I keep them on my keys, and use them almost everywhere I go. Movies, Bars, Concerts, hell even at conventions.
Not even an affiliate link or anything either. Just trying to spread the word.
Congrats on the new computers. You might want to air blower to clean your and your brother's computers every so often, especially since you have a pet. Having dust and pet fur in a computers can slow it down. I would recommend this. Other computer enthusiasts might know of better computer cleaners.
Thanks for all the great art!
As a side note, if you go to conerts/festivals or any place with loud music, I absolutely cannot recommend how important it is to protect your ears. I use these and it doesn't hinder the experince at all, there are other similar types, but this is the one I got recommend over 5 years ago, and they work great. It actually improves the experience IMO, some places have such loud music, you end up leaving with some really weird headspace thing going on and it can be hard to hear for the next few hours. They don't mask the sound of the music, it just reduces the amount of decibels your ears take in, which is one of the ways your hearing can be damaged. You can talk to a person normally and hear them just fine, you don't have to take them out to have a conversation. I hope this helps even one person, hearing loss is no joke and it's so easy to protect yourself. It's on a similar level to me as how important sunscreen is during extended periods of being in the sun.
> The website also has a great team of admins and moderators, with one year’s April Fools’ joke resulting in converting all prices in deal titles to its worth in Eneloops (very popular but very expensive rechargeable batteries).
I think of them as money too. Or ammo. Get these ones:

You need that charger to get the full life out of Eneloops. If you take care of them, Eneloops will last at least a decade, maybe longer.
Living with roommates sucks, especially roommates with very different class/work/sleep schedules. Everyone suggesting 9-10 pm quiet time needs to get out of their morning person bubble. Everyone else suggesting that OP go out every time they want to have a chill conversation with friends is also being unrealistic. For one, that's going to get really expensive. For another, OP has a right to use the living room they pay to rent, which is equally as strong as Roommate's right to sleep, so they must find a way to balance these rights.
I say this as a very, very light sleeper. In a decade and a half of living with roommates, I have never come to a point of not being able to work it out, nor come to a point of putting my foot down and telling a roommate they couldn't use the living room at conversational volumes whenever I was sleeping.
OP - maybe in the politest way possible, you can help your roommate explore some techniques to sleep better. White noise machine or fan, blackout curtains, eye mask, ear plugs. I would again politely encourage your roommate to at least try ear plugs for a week. I recommend the Mack's 32 dB - they are small and squishy enough to comfortably sleep on even for a side sleeper (33 dB are quite a bit bigger) and you can still hear a nearby alarm through them, though they block out background noise. PSA: DO NOT buy the play n charge kit, get eneloop batteries instead (these are great and only $16 on Amazon). Eneloops are cheaper, you get 4 of them, you can use them for anything, and most importantly they hold a charge longer and don't lose half their capacity in a couple of months.
One day my wife asked my why the fuck I was looking at a 50 gallons of lube after I clicked on it because someone blind linked to it on reddit.
Fun fact; Go Girl is also a non-phallo-looking STP device (stand-to-pee device) which is able to help people with typical female parts to pee while standing. : )
> This is for a simple analog wall clock, so I’ll go out and get AAs once it starts to get out of time.
Get rechargeable AA batteries next time. I recommend you get these ones (make sure your battery specifications match the packaging in this photo):

What about trial by jury? There's a lot of potential jurors.
Someone is going to need to start on the logistics of this pretty fast.

I live near a fairly major city street where a motorcycle shop moved in. These things, and a white noise generator, have been lifesavers. (At least for me, it was the relative quiet to 90Db motorcycle engine with a radio that would wake me up. This combination dulls it.)

Imma go ahead and be the old man that I am - Earplugs! Don't fuck up your hearing - you never get it back. I love the bass and loudness as much as anyone, but don't be dumb - tinnitus is no joke. pack something like these so you don't lose fidelity, just volume - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0044DEESS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1
I have one of those female urinary devices that is shaped like a funnel so I can pee standing up. I use it for outside music festivals with narsty blue portapotties, camping and whenever I want to write my name in the snow. As most people know, us wimmins mostly sit to pee. I was 28 years into peeing sitting down when I suddenly had to learn how to pee while standing. When you sit, there’s no thinking involved, gravity just does it’s thing and pee just falls out, easy! Peeing while standing though, your body just doesn’t want to do it, your brain says “holy shit don’t even try, you’ll just pee all over yourself!!” and no pee will happen. You actually have to sort of clench the upper muscles in your legs and, like, force the pee out. It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever had to learn as an adult. My husband actually had to teach me how to do it, telling me which muscles to use and what foot placement makes the peeing easier...I always thought guys had it so easy and it took me a few weeks of practice before I didn’t have to concentrate on peeing to make pee happen. I still think it’s more convenient to get to pee wherever I want but the actual act of doing it isn’t easy at all. Get the foot placement wrong or arch your back the wrong way and you will still pee on your own shoe, the toilet seat and it will probably get on your leg too.
These are the ones I have, can recommend. Comfy and they keep a decent sound quality. Have never had my ears hurt/ring like the did at Saint Pablo since wearing them.
Amazon Link. Not trying to shill the product or anything, but it's import to keep our build's clean and this is a necessary tool.
For an off the shelf ear plug, I've used Etymotic Research ER-20's for a long time. I keep a pair in my gig bag/case.
If you have the money, invest in a set of custom molded ear plugs. The sound difference is significant.
The problem isn't thermal paste, it's that people don't regularly maintain their devices and/or don't place their consoles somewhere with proper ventilation. My PS4 is 4 years old and runs dead silent because after one year (once it was out of warranty), I routinely (every 4-6 months) open my PS4 and dust out the inside with my electric duster (https://www.amazon.com/Metro-ED500-DataVac-500-Watt-Electric/dp/B001J4ZOAW). I blast the fan, power supply, all the vents, and loosen any hardened dust with a soft paintbrush.
My PS4 runs quiet no matter what I'm playing. Same applies for my PS3, which is going to be 9 years old this year and still runs cool.
This is why I always bring ear plugs to Disney parks. And if I forget, my first stop is always the medical office to pick up a pair of disposable ones. It really does make most rides more enjoyable (I'm constantly amazed at how ear-piercingly loud most rides are, especially given that so many children ride them).
As a former sound engineer at a punk venue, earplugs are invaluable down the road for saving your hearing with age. Get yourself a ncie pair like these and you'll hardly notice you're wearing them after 5 minutes or so.
My father has basically lost hearing in his left ear from going to punk shows in the 80s. Earplugs are a huge deal, especially considering how fucking loud everything is these days.
Assuming you are referring to 9V batteries like these, that will actually be a downgrade from normal AA cells, as 9 V batteries are actually a 6 pack of AAAA batteries.
While the voltage sound like it would be higher, AAAA are even worse than AA cells at delivering current, which is what is responsible for spinning motors up to speed. Thus, the motors will spin up even slower, and the voltage will sag massively.

If you intend to run that extra foot of Faux barrel, you'll pretty much need to rewire for a lipo or NiMH pack to get any reasonable performance.
If you are just looking for a no-effort mod, Eneloops are the safest way to do so. Their much higher current capabilities mean that they'll outperform even D alkaline cells, which are what Hasbro use to power their more powerful blasters, and they're pretty inexpensive to boot
I no longer travel without foam earplugs. They have got me to sleep in environments where I could not without them. Screaming weans....no problems. "Naaaaa naaa naaa naaa" hen party groups....blocked. Groups of wee dicks drinking buckfast....ignored.
I have them in every bag I am likely to travel with including my laptop bag and holdall.
I buy these fuckers in bulk... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Macks-Ultra-Ear-Plugs-Pair/dp/B0051U7W32/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=mack+earplugs&qid=1562693184&s=gateway&sr=8-4
Seriously this is good advice in the short term.
I snore like a freight train. My partner wears these earplugs every night for about 10 years now and has not had one problem with ear infections or my snoring. I am a very big dude, I can apparently make a lot of noise while snoring and now my partner enjoys uninterrupted sleep.
I also wear these earplugs when travelling. No other earplugs come close to the quiet. One evening a car was set on fire not 20 feet from my hotel window. Fire engines, with sirens etc. Apparently the owner was running around screaming in his underwear. I slept through the entire spectacle thanks to these babies.
Your story sucks. I feel sorry for you and those dugs.
The screaming is the most intense I've ever heard in my life.
I have this pair of musician ear plugs that I wear to all the concerts I go to and even though they're really basic they're still great at drowning out the screams while preserving the quality of the music.
I think I honestly would have been really sad without them because when I took them out for a minute I literally could barely hear the music over the screaming in my section.
It sounds like he's a great tenant other than the occasional noise at night.
You want an easy solution?
I'm completely serious. My wife snores and likes to watch TV late in bed, but I can put earplugs in and I sleep like a baby.
This really could be a problem with an $8.99 solution.
I'm a 40 year old with very present tinnitus (years of punk and rock concerts and playing in bands, DnB and Techno raves/club nights, a decade working in a wood shop around loud, high pitched machinery, and more recently dnb/techno production). There are a few things that have helped me out.
Always be conscious of your listening volume. For me this means finding the volume I instinctively want to listen to things at then rolling back a few notches. I also use an SPL meter on my phone occasionally to test my listening position but I don't consider it accurate.
It doesn't take long for the turned down listening volume to sound normal/pleasing, but it does take some time to get used to being conscious of how loud I want vs what is safe.
This is the only magic bullet in my suggestions, the rest are just things that I do to help. Control your volume!
Ear protection when I'm gigging or at shows. I have a couple sets of these guys that I keep in my gig bags and other places that are easy to remember when I'm going to a show. They're reasonably priced and don't make everything sound like shit
This one won't be popular, but I keep a neutral always-on EQ on my 2bus when producing/arranging. Currently I have a 6db LP filter rolling off everything above 18kHz pretty much all the time. I only turn it off when I move to mix/master, and as the final stage during sound design (I specifically plan to treat the top end last, and when the eq gets turned off, the volume gets turned down). I've tried a few different things (setting the LP higher/lower, using a dynamic shelf on everything above 15kHz, etc), but the 18k filter works best for me
Finally, I recently switched from closed back cans to open back and it's made a huge difference. My ears are less fatigued so I don't get into the trap of constantly turning things up during long sessions
