I ended up getting one of the Garmin chest straps which pairs instantly with the bike and no complaints so far...although it was $16.99 when I bought it on Feb 3rd, so price seems to fluctuate a lot. Garmin on Amazon
> In other news, I got a Forerunner 230 for Christmas and a $25 Amazon gift card. I've been thinking about getting a heart-rate monitor for a little bit but have a little more reason now. What's a good one for <$50 that you guys would suggest?
Garmin has their own heart rate monitor strap for use with their products. Right now it's about $40 on Amazon, down from $70 on Garmin's site. I got the 230 about two weeks ago with this strap and it's been working well for me so far.
I use a basic Garmin HRM you can get on amazon and a generic ANT+ usb stick to pair it to the PC. Garmin sells a USB ANT+ stick, but its twice the price or more usually.
I had some issues at first pairing it to the PC, so you may consider just getting the garmin ANT+ stick instead of generic to maybe ensure easier pairing, especially if you find a good price. I googled around until I figured it out though.
EDIT: The HRM also works with a lot of phones and things like that, my setup with the USB stick is to use it on stream. I recommend reading a bit before buying, there are a few ways to set it up.
I have a coospo $36 strap from amazon. It works fine. BUT it goes through about a battery every 10 days with regular use. Its voracious. I wouldnt buy it again because of that.
The strap is only uncomfortable when sitting down, well at least for me it is. Hardly notice it when running. Not sure exactly which strap I have but it was the one that came with my Fenix 2. It has the little running guy on the plastic bit. Having the heartrate metrics from the monitor really adds that extra dimension to my training. Especially when doing any kind of threshhold work. I would highly recommend looking into getting one. I know on Amazon you can get a garmin one for under $50. (https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Premium-Heart-Monitor-Strap/dp/B00BI9X1QM)
This one except that it wasn't nearly that expensive, more in the $20-30 range I think....
That's interesting to hear about the accuracy, I've found that it's pretty delayed so when I'm doing shorter intervals by the time it's catching up I'm already changing effort rates. For slow 'n steady efforts it's not too far off
I’m not saying don’t worry about it but I have had chest pains for days after this stuff.
I bought a cardiac monitor on amazon and everything is fine.
This is a six lead EKG so about as good as you can get at home. And I think it’s the only one FDA approved.
AliveCor® KardiaMobile 6L | FDA-Cleared | Wireless 6-Lead EKG | Works with Smartphone | Detects AFib or Normal Heart Rhythm in 30 Seconds https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RQW6SD5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8KJLEbX27N1GJ
I got a knockoff off ebay, it's great. Found it on amazon
I've had this one for two years now and I love it. Works well, it's comfortable, reliable... Works with Bluetooth and Ant+. Can't go wrong.
Definitely worth getting in my opinion. Without it I feel like I don't really know how I'm doing -- it's feedback that I use to know when I'm truly pushing myself vs. 'gee it really seems like I'm sweating now!'
You don't need to spend $60 either. This chest strap from Garmin is simple and bulletproof. Never had an issue connecting, and I use it on both my Peloton and road bike. https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-10997-00-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B000UOD5QM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1538344960&sr=8-4&keywords=garmin+heart+rate+monitor+chest+strap
I have AFib, medication manages it and my cardiologist said it will not harm me as long as it's under control, it may become more of a worry after 60.
See a cardiologist and you'll be fine. I did go through testing and wore a holter monitor before diagnosis. I also bought https://www.amazon.com/KardiaMobile-Single-Lead-Personal-Monitor-FDA-Cleared/dp/B01A4W8AUK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?adgrpid=56419504979&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhZHY8cKf-wIVmjizAB2fCAH7EAAYASAAEgKRd_D_BwE&hvadid=274797286041&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9... to monitor and my docs think it's great.
I'm not sure what you're trying to monitor but this thing was recommended by my cardiologist and does a pretty good job. It's not continuous like the watch though.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01A4W8AUK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If you're insured/can afford it, go on and see a cardiologist. It wouldn't hurt, especially with your apple watch results. They'll most likely give you a Holter monitor, echocardiogram, and/or a stress ekg test. Very standard workup that's not an inconvenience and helps rule out alot.
If you're particularly worried, you can get a Kardia device that can help you see if your heart is in a weird rhythm when you feel these episodes. I use it when I feel my heart rate spike inappropriately and you can send the readings to your cardiologist.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RQW6SD5?psc=1&ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_product\_details
I use [this cheap-ish one](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BS6B4PD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1\) and it works fine. Be sure to remove the battery and wipe it down after every use. I leave the battery off until I work out again.
I just replaced my Peloton heart rate monitor, it stopped working after less than a year. I tried replacing the battery and nothing. It also disconnected a lot. Otherwise it was fine and seemed accurate. I just bought this one and like it so far and it’s fully integrated with Peloton. Comfort with both was never an issue.
CooSpo Heart Rate... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R8741CN?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Great advice from WiseChoices. Something else you could add to your shopping list is a 6-lead EKG. It'll help rule out heart palpitations/AF -> https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RQW6SD5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1#customerReviews Does not replace the ER's 12 lead EKGs, but it does help the anxiety of thinking it could be something heart related.
I also bought myself the BLATN air quality meter to test my air at home. PM 2.5/10 (so dust/pollen/dirt/etc in the air, plus TVOCs like mold, chemicals, etc).
Also try to get yourself seen by a pulmonologist ASAP (it took me like 3 weeks to be seen for similar symptoms... also went to the ER several times myself. "Not a heart attack, not covid, go home." So I feel your pain and frustration). I suggest you go to a minute clinic tomorrow if you can, they'll likely give you an albuterol inhaler with your symptoms. That'll hopefully help with any excruciating flare ups while you wait to see a lung doc.
It also wouldn't hurt to do an assessment of your work and home air quality. When were your air ducts last cleaned, any signs of mold or do you live in a high humidity environment where mold could thrive? Mold can thrive and hide underneath carpet if your home's humidity is high. They have some good options on Amazon for HEPA filters with UV lights to kill germs/potential mold spores.
Best of luck OP. Always feel welcome to share what's going on. I found being on here really helped me mentally, knowing there's people here who know exactly how we feel and care.
As a regular racer, I would kindly and selfishly ask that you not try to enter competitive races using a dumb trainer. If your trainer estimates high, it really throws the dynamics of a race into chaos, and if you also don't have HR, people will be angry when this happens
That said, you absolutely can race -- have fun!
For a cheap HRM option, I've been perfectly satisfied with Coospo -- it's been just as reliable as our more expensive Garmin & Polar HRMs.
I’ve also had health related anxiety. Are you able to exercise? Do you feel worse after exercise? If not, then you’re likely just fine. You can take an ekg and get an automatic interpretation with this device: https://www.amazon.com/KardiaMobile-Personal-Device-Heart-Monitor/dp/B07RQW6SD5/ref=dp_prsubs_1?pd_rd_i=B07RQW6SD5&psc=1
I'd add, if you are buying a smart watch, get one that monitors for AFib, or get something like this (https://www.amazon.ca/AliveCor-1141-Kardia-Mobile/dp/B01A4W8AUK/) Afib is no fun either.
I use a Garmin dual monitor (ANT+ and Bluetooth) and it works well (Garmin 010-12883-00 HRM-Dual... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N3C5WRG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share). It is a chest strap. I first used one that goes on my forearm that I use in my indoor bike trainer, but that one is uncomfortable when rowing so I would not recommend heart monitors that wrap around your forearm.

Coospo HR monitor
I have this $25 HRM from Amazon and it works flawlessly.
Yeah, testing with pulsoid for me was extremely high latency vs just Ant+. I've used a couple BT/Ant garmin and samsung smartwatches with a couple services, but at the end of the day nothing beats golden cheetah+HR chest strap and cheap ant+ receiver.
These are my kit: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BS6B4PD
https://www.amazon.com/CooSpo-CycleOps-TrainerRoad-Extension-Included/dp/B07CB4328P/
I'm not saying you are wasting your time, just that the performance of these watch based systems seem to just be... much, much worse than is reliable. I found that having something high intensity reading 1-2 seconds after it occurred does not provide useful feedback or much entertainment unless it's pretty close to live,so a local solution works a lot better.
If what you offered was free, that's fine, but at 5 bucks to "try out" an app, I'd recommend someone try pulsoid which at least functions for free before I told them to shell out for an app.
That's my 2 cents.
I have one of these. Works great. I used to have a wahoo one and it stopped working after a few weeks.
The polar h10 is probably the most recommended and reliable one out there. But it costs more than double the coospo one.
Get a cheap heart rate monitor. It is really worth it.

I have a whoop strap and a garmin monitor but I got my wife this cheap one. I end up using it for my trainer rides because it hooks up to Strava and apple fitness Etc. super easy to use.
I use the Garmin asl well. Super easy to use. Connects right away.

Not sure if it can be a driver issue or a possible driver update on the MacBook. Double check your settings for any updates. Also try unparing the whoop from your computer, and re-pairing them only after a reboot.
Another alternate is to buy a $40 chest strap from Amazon. I bought one to replace my Garmin HRM because I needed a Bluetooth solution. https://www.amazon.com/CooSpo-Fitness-Tracker-Waterproof-Bluetooth/dp/B07R8741CN?ref_=ast_sto_dp
I still use my old Timex HRM from years ago but have this one bookmarked if it dies…lots of Peloton accessories lists mentioned it as a good value.

I've been using this generic HRM strap for the last year and a half and it's been pretty flawless - totally worth the ~$20:
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07BS6B4PD/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_dl_4R1SXR93ACX6T8X72JBY
Hey man, fwiw I'm an endurance athlete whose familiar with heart rate and have been training with heart rate metrics for many years. 170-180BPM is simply a measuring inaccuracy.... walking around at that heart rate would leave you in a massive puddle of sweat.
Before you see a doctor, try to establish your actual resting heart rate. To mitigate inaccuracies you'll need a chest strap HR monitor as wrist based monitors are prone to inaccuracy. Upon waking up, throw on the chest strap and note the variance of your HR for approximately a minute to get your actual resting HR.
Heart rates are individual and yours will be different from your peers, but 170-180 almost seems like your recording device picked up your step cadence or is simply incorrect.
My max HR is 174, recorded from a bike race, and at rest my HR can be between 30bpm, up to 55bpm depending on training load, fitness, and freshness.
The following link is the HR chest strap monitor I use.
Hope this helps, and keep up the good work!
https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-HRM-Dual-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B07N3C5WRG/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Garmin+hr+dual&qid=1634680103&sr=8-1
I’ve used the Scosche Rhythm armband for the past 5 years and it’s great. $75, pairs with my Wahoo Elment and my Peloton. I’ve tested the accuracy against a couple of other heart rate monitors and it’s spot on. Scosche Rhythm
https://www.amazon.com/Scosche-RHYTHM-Heart-Monitor-Armband/dp/B00JQHTJS2
I've been using the Garmin HRM-Dual for over a year now. I've had to change the battery a couple times. There have been one or two runs where the reading was clearly wrong, but I restarted the run, reconnected the HR monitor, and things were back to normal. Otherwise, it's been a good heart rate monitor.
It doesn't work in the water, but it doesn't seemed hurt by the water. I wore it during a triathlon this summer, and as soon as I came out of the water it started working.
Can't speak to Tickr reliability, but I've used this generic HRM for about a year and a half without issue, if you're looking for an alternative:
CooSpo Heart Rate Monitor Chest Strap Bluetooth4.0 ANT+ IP67 Waterproof Chest Heart Rate Sensor for Peloton Zwift Polar DDP Yoga Map My Ride Garmin Sports Watches https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07BS6B4PD/
I've spent some time troubleshooting my cheap one. Yours is probably perfectly functional, but there's two things to "fix" it.
Since it just stopped working, you may need to replace the battery. It won't crap out completely when the battery starts to go -- just start providing increasingly wonky results.
More likely, particularly since it just got cooler, is that you're not creating enough electrolyte-rich sweat to get a good signal. If that's the case, this stuff will immediately resolve your issue. Just put a dab on the contacts before each run.
I use the Garmin one since both my watch and cycling computer are Garmin:

If you are suffering from afib, you could also get a Kardia device. They are really expensive for what they are and in this case, showing in the app that you have afib or any other heart issues won't be classed as a diagnosis, but will get you in the door at a cardiologist.
https://www.amazon.com/Kardia-Mobile-AliveCor-Black-0-6oz/dp/B01A4W8AUK
AFAIK it is considered a gray area/market. unlike testosterone, which is a schedule 3 controlled substance (same as ketamine, for reference), estradiol and other transfem-relevant medications are not illegal to possess without a prescription; it's the dispensing without confirming the buyer has a prescription that's illegal. I've heard stories of US customs seizing people's packages (you can find them here on reddit) and sending warnings in the mail, but never of any further action. basically, and especially if you just use a different name on the address, it's not worth anyone's time to try to nail you with something. in any case, to get anywhere they'd have to prove that you ordered it and that you didn't have a prescription at the time. but if someone at customs decides to fuck with you by seizing the package anyway there's not much you can do besides try again. personally, I've ordered bicalutamide and estradiol online from https://alldaychemist.com, and the box came clearly labeled "PERSONAL SUPPLY MEDICATION" with a slip of paper included accurately listing the contents. wasn't touched by customs.
as for any adverse effects due to these medications, I can only say to be be careful and do your own research. if you're worried about the QTc prolongation specifically, you might want to get one of these https://www.amazon.com/Alivecor%C2%AE-KardiaMobile-Wireless-Detection-Smartphones/dp/B01A4W8AUK/.
I'm going through something similar. Randomly triggered an Afib attack a few years ago during a basketball game after i had some energy drink. I will now experience palpitations and arrhythmias during periods of high stress and anxiety, especially if I have been trying to compensate for poor sleep by drinking more coffee.
For what its worth, caffeine irritates me far more than alcohol does, and I have switched to decaf and generally cut out caffeine altogether. I try not to drink on consecutive days, and keep it to 1-2 small pours when I do. Lately however, I tend to drink barrel proof stuff so it adds up fast.
If you do have a heart condition like I do, I highly recommend getting one of these. I use it to record my heartbeat when I am feeling off, and it saves into a PDF that I can send to my cardiologist in real time.

Thanks for the further details!
I went ahead and bought a Versa 3 yesterday. I fully intended to exercise my Bestbuy 45 day return policy if it doesn't work out, but I didn't want to make the sacrifices I know I'll have to make with Garmin, so I figured I'd give the versa 3 HR monitor a chance first. Most the reviews came shortly after release, so bugs may have effected those.
Hopefully I'll find it acceptable. If not, I'll return it and give Garmin a shot, it's HR monitor has glowing reviews. But the sleep tracking is awful I hear. Also the notification features are weak and it doesn't answer phone calls. I use this pretty often on my Samsung.
I wasn't satisfied with my Samsung either. It gets the heart rate pretty accurate in steady state. But it's algorithms are pretty bad. In many exercises, it tracks HR... then quietly ignores that info in the calorie calculation. It's calorie calculation outside exercise sessions is even worse. Basically if I'm not exercising, it only credits me barely above my BMR. The sleep tracking also isn't as good as fitbit.
My chest strap is this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BS6B4PD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_8VX7FE75KJVA5JD45TYW
I have a Garmin Vioacitive 3 and I'm unable to get it to pair in any way. I purchased a Garmin HRM-Dual Heart Rate Monitor and it works with the "Row Indoor" Garmin app and supersedes the watches HRM to use the chest unit instead.
Not sure if the Solar would be different but based on looking at what my watch says, vs what the chest strap says, the strap seems more consistent and accurate.
As for calorie counts I don't understand the vast difference between what the Ergatta reports vs what the Garmin Row Indoor app reports The Ergatta is more than 4x higher than what the app reports.
With all that said, I like using the Garmin Row because it feeds into the rest of my Garmin metrics (sleep activity etc.)
I'm using a garmin heart rate monitor that is working fine with Tonal. I had a little trouble pairing it at first, but turning off all other bluetooth devices in the same room first did the trick. Like /u/GabeRealMedina mentioned, there are two benefits - a real time heart rate counter shows up on the screen during workouts, and there is a report when you are done that shows your heart rate over time during the workout.

I will write more later.
As others will say, keep seeing a doctor instead of the internet but...
It may be worth a small investment in a AliveCor KardiaMobile 6L or a similar device. Then you can take your own EKGs at home and possibly catch something that is intermittent. There are certain heart issues like a Left Bundle Branch Block (LBBB) that will cause the device to be unable to classify an issue but at least you'll have a history of EKGs to show your doctor at your next visit.
For what it's worth, my standard-issue Garmin chest strap HRM has been rock solid.
I picked up the Scosche Rhythm+ Armband that supports both Bluetooth and Ant+ from Amazon. I like it way better than my Garmin chest strap. It’s unbelievable accurate and comfortable to wear.
The bike supports both Bluetooth and ANT+. If you connect it via Bluetooth you’ll set it up in the settings screen on the bike. And it will prompt you to connect it before each class if it doesn’t do it automatically. If connecting via ANT+ just turn on the band and get near the bike.

I don't have my IC4 yet but this Scosche Rhythm+ Heart Rate Monitor Armband gets good reviews from lots of cyclists
It was very random for me. Sometimes, I would have it once every few months. Sometimes, I would have it once a week. I had an ablation done through a catheter. It was very simple. During the procedure, they trigger episodes while you're under an XRay to identify where it's coming from and why. Then, based on that decide what to do. The reason I had the ablation, is that the medication did not work well for me. How we treat Tachycardia has changed recently. So if you haven't seen a cardiologist recently for the problem, I would recommend doing so. The treatment options in the last 20 years have changed. Buy a heart monitor like this one to capture the episode and share with your doctor: https://www.amazon.com/Alivecor%C2%AE-KardiaMobile-Wireless-Detection-Smartphones/dp/B01A4W8AUK/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2S0CJYEYBANLF&dchild=1&keywords=kardia+mobile+heart+monitor&qid=1595126797&sprefix=kardia%2Caps%2C224&sr=8-3 Some smartwatches can also capture EKGs that doctors are comfortable using. Check if your smartwatch is one of them. Your doctor may recommend wearing a heart monitor for a few weeks to properly capture your rhythm.
Your primary care doctor will be able to order preliminary testing while you wait for an appointment from a cardiologist. Since I knew I was getting the procedure, I purposely bought an insurance plan for the year that would fully cover it. I will be changing my plan next year.
If I buy just a Garmin HRM (like attached) will that work with a 3rd party app to Strava or does it need a Garmin watch / computer.

I use and recommend the Wahoo TICKR (~$40 on Amazon)!
I pair my TICKR to my Android/Pixel 3 using the Wahoo app and just let the app handle all the data collection for my workout. You can even set it to automatically upload it to other apps (like Runkeeper, or Strava in my case).
I know a lot of people go with the Polar H10 (~$90 on Amazon), but I didn't find the need for the extra features it offers (which is few).
(Bonus: I still 'start' and record a workout on my Fitbit just to have the data in my Fitbit Dashboard as well)
I just bought this one off Amazon. It'll arrive tomorrow and I'm going to try it out on Monday. The reviews seem decent and the price (for me) is right.
I used a 30% off code for my scosche - there’s probably one floating around for Mother’s Day.
And I must have remembered which one the cheap one was incorrectly - let me scroll through amazon to see if I can find it.
Edit- searched hr monitors in this community and this coospo one has been mentioned in the group multiple times. Also if you have an Orangetheory hr monitor, it will work. Basically anything that connects via ant+ if you’re wanting to shop around.
Just FYI idk if the HRM is compatible with the 235. I have one of these bad boys.

Hello! I use a Garmin Heart Rate Monitor for nearly every stream. I'm not sure on the specific range, but it definitely works anywhere within the room I stream in. I've had 0 issues with it, and there are a couple of youtube videos on setting it up.
The easiest way to broadcast it on stream is to use Golden Cheetah. You can make the background transparent fairly easily in OBS, resize the number to how you like it, etc.
It requires two items to work. Currently one is on sale, but it should hopefully be around the 50 dollar budget. The two devices needed:
Also to anyone curious, the waistband is quite adjustable. I'm fairly tiny and its smallest setting is good for me, however it can expand quite a bit. It fits nicely under clothing, and is not intrusive.
I have a Garmin FR230 and am interested in heart rate training. I also have Apple Watch S2, which seems to give me inconsistent readings. For that reason I sort of scoffed at wrist HRMs and didn't get the Garmin FR 235 that has an HRM.
Now what are my best options? I see the Scosche RHYTHM+ mentioned around here as well as various chest straps. I could also sell off and get the 235 if folks think the HRM is pretty good.
If it matters I'm doing Pfitz 18/55 training so there will be some long runs where the effort must be very dialed in. Thanks!
As someone who uses a lot of heart rate monitors I can tell you that your Apple watch can be up to 10bpm off easy. Easy. If its not worn tight enough itll be off 5bpm, if the sensors wet thats 5bpm, watch slightly off center thats 5bpm off.
Not to mention when you look at your heart rate you will either see a high number and stress which raises it more, or see a low number and stress and now its a high number and you stress.
The only heart rate monitor you should trust are heart rate strap monitors and those still can be completely inaccurate if they arent kept soaking wet.
The only use the apple watch heart rate monitor is good for is knowing what general heart rate zone your in. Especially since times where you really want to know your heart rate during exercise wrist worn heart rate monitors can easily be 20% off. 160bpm is a heavy cardio zone and at 160 your wrist worn heart rate monitor can have a reading of 128-192bpm.
Proof This is my resting heart rate on my Garmin Vivosmart 3 (which has a heart rate sensor as accurate or more compared to the apple watch AFAIK) vs my Suunto Ambit 2. Shitty filter to make the Suunto easier to read because juggling keeping both the backlight on the suunto and the vivosmart from timing out and turning the display off and focusing the picture was a fucking ordeal.
3/4 of my family has this $21 Garmin and have no problems with it.
I have found the wrist based HRM's to be pretty unreliable. Ended up getting one of the Garmin chest straps which pairs instantly with the bike and costs between $16-$22.
I second this. We use the Wahoo HRM after having terrible luck with the Polar HRM and Santa brought me a Garmin for Xmas. I’m finally getting a feel for how hard I’m working and what my heart is doing at the same time. Also helps me to remember to breathe deeply in the climb when I’m sucking wind or when I’m exhausted.
The technology exists, it's not expensive either. We're talking sub-100$
and this shit is trusted by cardiologists.
Garmin Heart Rate Monitor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UOD5QM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_PvVgAb15DA0SY
That's the one I got, $18. It pairs to your watch and then it will show your hr, zone, vo2 max, etc on/ after runs
Do you know if I can add something like this to my AW?
I'll add my voice to the crowd endorsing measuring your effort by heart rate, rather than pace.
An inexpensive option for doing this, assuming you have a smartphone already, is this HR monitor, sync'ed to RunKeeper or other running app on your phone.
I have this Scosche monitor. It works great. It does not have its own display, but sends a signal to RunKeeper in real-time, and you can monitor your heart rate on your phone continuously if you want.
What I prefer to do is get the "audio cues" from RunKeeper, every 1/4 mile, with my pace info and heart rate. This is just the right amount of feedback for me, and I can just leave my phone in my pocket.
I've had numerous problems with their straps and getting reimbursed for it. Awful corporate policies and management. You can buy the new arm band for $80 off Amazon, just search scosche rhythm+
Scosche RHYTHM+ Heart Rate Monitor with Armband, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JQHTJS2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_qaquzb2CDCCF8
There's a wealth of options. You can have dedicated wrist-mount, chest straps with bluetooth to your phone (like Wahoo!'s Tickr), etc. Here's a great place to start shopping:
Here is an alternative, which assumes you have a smartphone.
Download RunKeeper, and use their premium plan (which costs $40 annually, I think). It has a spectrum of training plans, including preparation plans for 5K, 10K, half, and marathons. (It also has plans for general fitness and weight loss.)
Then, buy this no-frills HR monitor: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JQHTJS2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for $70. It syncs with your phone very simply.
You can review all the data on the RunKeeper web site, to track progress, etc. This is the setup I use, and I have found it to be excellent.
I think a heart rate monitor is the best way to measure calories burned with steady state cardio. It won't work for things like HIIT or weight training or anything. But it should work for something like cycling as long as you are keeping more or less a steady pace. I use this one and like it for when I go running, but there are a ton of them out there.
I'm looking to finally pick up a heart rate monitor and I think I might have one. I've been looking at this one but I wasn't sure if there was a better, or more suggested, one for <$50 on Amazon. Any input is appreciated.
*I run with the Forerunner 230
To be honest the wrist is just a terrible place to measure in general when you're moving your arms around a lot. I use the HW1 for passive reading and then a Scosche Rhythm+ between my bicep and shoulder for actual exercise. Or you could go the chest strap route.
If your phone connects to ANT devices, and you have a mount for your bike, then you can get up and running with good accuracy with Garmin's cheap chest band ($24): https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-10997-00-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B000UOD5QM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1488844619&sr=8-2
I've never done this, but I've been using a rowing machine with an HRM all winter, and I'm learning a lot. I'm gonna at least give it a go when I can get out on my bike again!
could look into something like this just for hockey: https://www.amazon.com/Wahoo-TICKR-Monitor-iPhone-Android/dp/B00INQVYZ8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1483932403&sr=8-4&keywords=heart+rate+monitor+bluetooth
Bluetooth so you may be able to sync it all to google fit or apple fit or something.
The OTF Flex Arm Band is their soon to be released HR sensor which is a re-branded Scosche arm band.
You can see the OTF branded one here: https://i.redd.it/ssm8bv4thdzx.jpg
You can see the Scosche version on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Scosche-RHYTHM-Heart-Monitor-Armband/dp/B00JQHTJS2/
I've never had an issue using the Hr monitor. I can understand when moving it can be a bit off but shouldn't be anything crazy. I also use a hr band that goes on my forearm and it's very accurate. I find the chest ones to be uncomfortable after a period of time.
Scosche RHYTHM+ Heart Rate Monitor with Armband, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JQHTJS2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_VvLIyb63KR8C0
I've tested the Apple Watch, Scosche, and the equipment used at my doctors office and they all hit the same number ever time. Just thought I'd share. :)
I can't speak to that Bose product, but that's way more money than you need to spend. I would recommend just getting a standard Bluetooth heart rate monitor from a reputable company like Wahoo.

And then a decent Bluetooth set of headphones. I've been using these ones for about 7 months and they are great.

This combination will cost you about $80, rather than the $150 will. Good luck!
> Charge HR
Thanks, is this what you're talking about? How is "effort" measured? Would love to see a screen shot of what it shows you!

It's still fairly removed from the heart. I would try getting a cheap chest strap and taking it through there. HRV might tell you more of what you want to know than RHR.
Before we go about missing the point (and edit our comments), here and here. I recommend the first one since it has more versatility for apps and gives you the option for ANT+ if you ever need it. ANT+ is nice to have additionally just because some things require it and buying a second HRM just because you didn't buy one that was bluetooth and ANT+ to begin with is frustrating.
On long bike rides, I found my battery to be near dead on the Watch (mostly due to the heart rate monitor being active). I would usually charge in the car on the way home.
Recently, I've paired a Bluetooth heart rate monitor to the Watch and found the battery life to be greatly improved. I use the Wahoo Tickr and love it:
https://www.amazon.com/Wahoo-TICKR-Monitor-iPhone-Android/dp/B00INQVYZ8/
It's a bit more price but this tracker is what I have and it does both bluetooth (for phone) and ant+ (if you ever get a bike computer) for $50. It will be far more accurate than a fitbit and you can map your heart rate to climbs etc. It will also improve calorie counts.
My wife uses a fitbit blaze when we ride and it works fine. It's not perfect but it's just fine. The downside to the Blaze is no GPS built in so you have to carry your phone anyway. The Surge has GPS tracker so no phone needed. Your heart rate should be reasonably accurate just make sure the band is snug.
I purchased this based on DC Rainmaker's rec and I have found it to be both extremely accurate and comfortable, as did he.
Many people will have different opinions on which watch/brand is "best". It all comes down to what you value most: battery life? satellite acquisition time? super accurate pace? All GPS watches will tell you distance, time, pace, and splits. Most of them, however, will usually round your pace to the nearest 5 seconds.
Two biggies for me were satellite acquisition time and battery life. I started out with a Garmin FR10, which was a great starter watch, but I found myself standing around for 5, 10, even 15 minutes just waiting for it to find a signal! I now have a Garmin FR230, which is way speedier due to its ability to use GPS and GLONASS. I am even able to pick up a signal while still inside. I can turn my watch on while I tie my shoes, and by the time I'm done, it has acquired a signal and I can start my run right away.
Optical HR tech is fairly new, so you won't find too many watches implementing it. Additionally, you have to remember that you will have to wear the sensor directly against your skin in order for it to pick up your HR, so if you live in a place where it may be cold enough for you to wear multiple layers a majority of the time, a watch with an integrated optical sensor may not be the best investment. Instead, you may look into purchasing a separate optical HR monitor such as the Scosche Rhythm+, which connects to Bluetooth/ANT+ compatible devices and can be worn on your forearm.
My recommendation would be the Garmin 230 (or 235 if you are dead-set on getting a watch with an integrated optical HR sensor) since it fits your requirements. I have had good experience with Garmin devices, their customer service is great, and their products work well. I hope that helps!
I really recommend the wahoo tickr
http://www.amazon.com/Wahoo-TICKR-Monitor-iPhone-Android/dp/B00INQVYZ8
It works over both bluetooth and ant+, so if you ever want to connect it to your phone or some other device you can. In fact, it can connect to an ant+ device and at least one bluetooth device simultaneously, so if you feel like using your vivofit 2 to display your hr while simultaneously using your phone to record your whole run (hr and gps), well, you can.
I bought a wahoo and a refurbished vivofit 2 a couple of weeks back, so I can confirm that they connect easily and have so far have played well together.
